Newcastle Offered Uruguayan World Cup Star For £2M

News today in the Sunday Sun that Newcastle United have been offered a £2M deal for Uruguayan World Cup star Egidio Arevalo – full name Egídio Arévalo Ríos.

Egidio Arevalo – available for £2M

It seems that Penarol have allowed a group of Argentinian businessmen, who own a part of his part of his contract, to make an approach to Newcastle United.

We noticed this player for Uruguay, who of course were just fantastic in the World Cup after being the last and fifth South American country to qualify,  they reached the semi-finals and even then played very well, but were beaten 3-2 by the Netherlands.

Bur we would doubt very much if Chris Hughton would be interested in the player, who hardly fits the profile of players the club would like to recruit this summer.

Arevalo has only played 9 times for Uruguay, and only recently as proposed move to the Italalian  Serie A club Cagliari fell through at the last moment, but he looked a very decent player during the World Cup, and was one reason for the Uruguayan’s  unexpected success.

Brazilian side Botafogo are also interested in the player and at  £2M  Newcastle can afford him –  but we somehow think there are better deals for Newcastle to make for a younger defensive midfielder than Arevalo.

The player has just returned from vacation in Mexico, but we would be very surprised if Hughton makes a move for this player – but we’ll see.

What do you think?

This guy.. no. But his partner in the Uruguay midfield Perez would be a bargain. Plays for Monaco I think. Both lacking some pace, but they are solid defensive midfielders. Perez impressed me the most though as he showed passion and amazing agression. Havent seen anything like it for a while.

But Arevalo.. no.. we have sufficient CM options.

miguel veloso just went to genoa !!
Surely that’s the calibre we should have been looking at.

This guy isn’t the worst and Sol’s signing seems to have blown the under 26 ruling out of the water.

where has this under 26 rule come from? has anyone from newcastle actually said this?

im not sure we need another CM but it is often mentioned that someone playing as a DM should be older.

howayman I totally agree about perch, he looked very shakey, why didnt we sign luke young, least he is proven in the prem, would get onouha if we had the money, right age, and improving all the time, and english

luke young was linked with liverpool, so out of our league i think. i believe the transfer window is like a q, man u, chelsea, man c get first choice then the likes of arsenal + liverpool, everton, tottenham and so on, there for i think we are battling for scraps this season

I have heard that newcastle have been experimenting with guthrie at right back in training, cant imagine him playing there myself. I think it was calderwood that recommended perch to hughton, as he used to have him at forest

Way to early to judge Perch. He has only played a couple of bloody games for us. Give him time to bed in and get used to everything.

toon 1978 I have seen him plenty before he came to the toon, he is a very average player, didnt need to see him in a toon shirt to see that, he is best playing as a holding midfielder. Hope he proves me wrong, but it aint looking good if he is going to be first choice right back, r taylor is even better than him, and he is woeful, but might still be better than simpson who i think is one of the worst right backs i have ever seen

I would sell smith, r taylor, s.taylor (out of contract soon and dont rate at all) and also best

The blanks are where we need to strengthen in my opinion

yeah geordie lad Perch didnt show any threat going forward and was by far the weakest member of the back four.
and without routledge and gutierez in the side we are possibly the most boring side in britain. no flare no creativity, just nothing.
xisco and best have made the most of their second chance with us in pre-season, and looked very good yesterday, but god we are still 2-3 players short at the moment.

its easy to say i would sell such and such. the problem we have is no one will pay the wages some of these players are on. i would keep r.taylor as he can cover alot of positions.

pretty much agree geordie lad, lovenkrands has looked sloppy in pre-season and we are so deperate for a fast striker.

I would say we are 3-4 players short from been where i would like us to be, we need a right back, a winger, a central midfielder with pace, get rid of smith and maybe nolan aswell and get a decent player in their place, and also a striker, this is the sort of side i was hoping for, and it wouldnt have cost a fortune either

I would defo get cairney from hull aswell, would cost around 4m, but i think will be worth 15-18m in 3-4 years

I agree with you on RTaylor Slazberger. Think we need to give Perch a much longer chance to settle too. It’s a huge step up for him to move to the Toon.

Howay man, you’re right, we despirately need a speedy front man plus we need a left winger (or cover for both wings at that). Still think Xsico can come good though up front.

If we are going to get someone on loan i would prefer weiss to cleverly, as he is more direct, and has pace, and can play right or left wing

Geordielad, Weiss would be a great signing as he can cover both wings. Think we should be looking to try and get him perminately tbh, 3-4 mil perhaps? He’ll nver get a chance at City now.

Guys, I can someone explain to me why LuaLua hasn’t been given a look in? Last season would have been the PERFECT opportunity for him to get into the side and develop as a player but he was immediately shipped out. Everytime I see him play I think he seems a cracking little player with an amazing work rate!

Onto Routledge, give him till January to prove himself before we buy a replacement I would say (I think he will do well in the Prem myself) although we are woefully short of wingers as I doubt Hughton will want to play Donaldson, but might use Xisco- Interesting times…

Long time reader first time poster….

Would love to see Egidio Arevalo join the club, ya i know we need players in other areas but i think he is an excellent ball winner and grafter. I watched all of his games in the World Cup and he preformed with aplomb! i think we are lacking a proper ball winner and tackler even though we have the likes of barton, smith etc etc

Tom4Nufc – every time I’ve seen him he’s looked like a headless chicken, runs in circles, loses too much possession and can’t pass particularly well!

Routledge gave us so many more options last year and make us look a lot more balanced. People say he can’t make the step up, but Stephen Carr wasn’t good enough for us and is now captain of mid-table Birmingham!
