Hughton Shifting Strikers Around To Give Them A Game

We have six decent strikers at the club in Andy Carroll, Peter Lovenkrands, Shola Ameobi, Leon Best, Xisco and young 19 year-old Nile Ranger.

Nile Ranger – playing wide on right

And in order to give these lads a try-out Hughton has been playing them out wide – with Xisco playing out on the left, as he did on Saturday, and Nile Ranger playing out wide on the right.

Hughton has said he had very little contact with Xisco last season, when he was on loan at Racing Santander, and said today:

“Xisco has been good in pre-season.” “He has come back in good shape and he is our player. What we have are six strikers who have all been fit in pre-season.”

“It has been a case of shifting them around to give them the minutes they need.”

“We have ended up playing Nile Ranger on the right of midfield, and he did not figure on Saturday because he had played for the reserves the previous night.”

“It is an unfamiliar position for Xisco on the left.” “We want to make sure we make the most of him.”

Certainly Chris is not short of options up front next season, and we still have a certain Kevin Nolan, who in the first half on Saturday, looked the most dangerous Newcastle forward – although of course he was playing in central midfield.

But we hope Kevin can keep getting the goals he got for us last season, and regularly got in the Premier League when he was captain at Bolton Wanderers.

Comments welcome.

there has been rumours newcastle have made a move for klasnic who was on loan at bolton last season, decent player, but is 30 years old, but is a free transfer after he cancelled his contract with nantes this morning

i dont even think we will bring a striker in, we have enough of them, maybe not enough quality but we need cover for places like left back and wingers first!

I disagree with you JSY, we have 5 strikers but neither of them are first team players. only backups in my opinon. We need a someone that will give us about 14-15 goals at least. My vote is still for robbie keane or bobby zamora

Teamstoof – robbie keane has only scored 15 + goals in a season twice in his career and bobby zamora never has

My opinion on the current strikers is:

    1. Lovenkrands: I think he is our best striker
    2. Best: Finally I can read a few positive comments about this guy. It was very difficult for him last season, but now in pre-season (ok it is still pre-season) he shows that he can score goals.
    3. Carroll: IMO a very overrated player. Good in the air and he works very hard, but that’s it; no technique; very slow; … Will he be able to carry the pressure from the n°9 shirt? IMO he will not be able to be a descent n° 9.
    4. Ameobi: Well I keep saying that he has got the potential te be a good EPL striker, but he needs to stay fit and he needs to work harder during the games. His technique is on one hand brilliant and 2 minutes later it is a disaster.
    5. Ranger: young player with very good technique and he is fast. Maybe it would be better for him to be loaned to a CC-side for one season.
    6. Xisco: I’ll give him a chance and I hope he grabs it, cause I still don’t know why they bought him 2 seasons ago.

To be clear; I give them all my full support even if I sounded sometimes negative!

I would not loan out Ranger and i would give him a decent run in the team i would have Xisco and Best as 4rth and 5th choice but does anyone else think ranger looks like he offers more as a loan striker than Carrol as if we play 4-5-1 we need someone to link the play which i think ranger is great at and Carrol doesn’t make things happen he requires good service which with jonas and routledge you carn’t gurantee

Nile Ranger needs to given more chances. He was perfect last season in the championship and had some experience. Why loan him out to another championship team and not improving on his game when he comes back. Just keep him give him a chance.

    both are good forwards
xisco and best are good championship forwards
Ranger i think is being loaded out so that leaves Ameobi is awful
so we need to strengthen definatly
but who are we likely to get
