Leon Best Starting To Show What He’s Made Of

1:43 pm, Monday, August 2nd, 2010 by Ed Harrison · 76 Comments

Newcastle have six strikers fighting it out in pre-season, and it’s fairly obvious that one or two of these will be loaned out for next season.

Leon Best – will get his chance this season?

However, we have to think the likely two to be loaned out are Xisco and young Nile Ranger, and we think Leon Best will get his chance to prove he is a Premiership-class  player next season.

Best had a bad start to his career but has been bright in pre-season and has got two good opportunist goals.

Some reports over the weekend said that Newcastle may be prepared to loan out Best this season, but we think he just needs time – just as Kevin Nolan did when he first arrived at Newcastle.

The Ireland international has impressed so far in pre-season with two goals in his last two outings, and he’s looked more than decent up front.

Best told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today:

“You can play well as a striker, and not score, and play badly, and score a hat-trick,”

“I just need to keep finding the net, really.” “That’s what I’ve not done as much in my career, and probably helped others, but if I keep scoring, I’ll get pats on my back.”

“The lads welcomed me with open arms as soon as I came.” “I didn’t get the goal early, and it was like I could never score, so hopefully this season’s going to be different for me.”

“I’ve got my first goal, and I’m just going to keep striving.”

Leon has got it tioght there – he just needs to keep finding the net as he has done in his last two appearances and his goal on Saturday was out of nothing as he put the ball home from a great free kick form the left wing by the impressive Ryan Taylor.

Goals lift sides, and that’s exactly what his two goals have done for Newcastle - and we hope it’s also lifted the spirits of Leon himself, because he’s starting to show he has the ability to succeed on Tyneside - if given a little time.

We’ll put up a poll and let us know which two strikers you’d like to see start for Newcastle next season – each reader will have two votes.

Comments welcome.

If he starts scoring, the “pats on the back” and general praise and support will happen

I thought he had a bigger affect in away games than lovenkrands.

He is relatively young and has pace and strength so there is no reason why he shouldnt succeed.

If his strike against Plymouth went in that struck the bar would have went in there would be a different perception of him. As Hughton said, when Carroll and McLoven are scoring for fun its hard to make an impact.

  • 4 davybtoon // Aug 2, 2010 at 3:12 PM

I’ve said all along that best will come good, ppl were judging him coz he weren’t scoring, was at the game sat n best n xisco both look sharp, yet ppl keep sayin we shud loan them out or sell yet best, xisco n ranger hav looked some of r better players in pre season, I say keep them n xisco has looked ok on wing

  • 5 Axel // Aug 2, 2010 at 3:32 PM

i agree with davybtoon ,some players need longer than others too find their form at a new club and when he joined Carroll and Lovenkrands where scoring for fun . Lets face it how many games did he start and play the full 90 minutes ? a striker needs time on the pitch to start a scoring streak and he did not get a lot of time . The lad does imo have something to offer .

  • 6 Solaidback // Aug 2, 2010 at 3:35 PM

Personally I think we should keep Carroll, Lovern, Best, Xisco & loan out Ranger, maybe we could loan ranger to Blackpool or another club like Forest maybe to give him 1st team football… but I would defo get shot of shola, he’s had way too many years in the PL to prove himself & failed everytime, so it’s time to go Shola!!!

  • 7 Captain Beefheart // Aug 2, 2010 at 3:36 PM

‘If his strike against Plymouth went in that struck the bar would have went in there would be a different perception of him’ RobbyB@3

Too right, Robby. I felt for the lad as he really deserved the break after such unselfish play on previous outings. At present I prefer him to Nile, tbh, at least he knows where the barn door is even if he does forget the banjo at times.

  • 8 Captain Beefheart // Aug 2, 2010 at 3:45 PM

Just to remind folks, Shola (like Harper) is on a ‘lifetime local contract’, sealed with blood and signed at the 4 Lane Ends crossroads.

The other signatory to the contract for Shola’s soul is the Zombie Count Westwood, the unseen but always felt vampiric presence that still stalks the director’s box at SJP.

And neither Shola nor Steve will EVER again be free agents… (cue spooky organ music) ….ha ha ha ha HA HA HA HA!

tomorrow – i will put it back on then just in case.

it would have been interesting to ee hw shola would have done last season if he hadnt been injured so early. he had started the season well

its also worth noting that the press are using these blogs, so lets support the team people. most things on here are up for debate and thats what i like about it but the press will take one side of an argument from here to suit the story they want to write making us look like a laughing stock to the rest of the world

davybtoon: “I’ve said all along that best will come good, ppl were judging him coz he weren’t scoring, was at the game sat n best n xisco both look sharp, yet ppl keep sayin we shud loan them out or sell yet best, xisco n ranger hav looked some of r better players in pre season, I say keep them n xisco has looked ok on wing”

Agree with u mate. I dont care who scores.. If we win and Leon Best played in the game, he has done his part. He probably made some runs creating space for whoever scored:)

Lets not ruin our strikers confidence just because they don’t score regularly. We have 5 strikers now which is perfect. And all are decent players too. We have competition for the starting 11, and we have cover for injuries.
Of course I would like a superstar striker for our club, but lets finish top10 in the EPL and continue to build a stronger foundation in the squad. We are now so lucky to have a group of players who actually love the club. It has been a while since we had something like that.

    get him out

  • 21 Wright // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:22 PM

We have 5 average strikers who arn’t proven in the premiership so i think we need someone like i know he is a mackem but Jones leads the attack well and i have heard bruce is looking to get rid

  • 22 baro // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:27 PM

I wouldn’t be surprised if Leon Best scored 10 + goals in the premier league. He is getting the support on the field that he needs.

  • 23 Turkish Magpie // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:40 PM

    we need Asamoah Gyan!

  • 24 Wright // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:46 PM

Turkish magpie i agree Gyan would be like a Martins a pacy player who can change a game

  • 25 Robby Bobson // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:46 PM

Wright…you say get Jones, but he wasnt proved in the prem a few years ago and never really banged them in for fun in the premiership.

I do agree we seem to have alot of good strikers, but none of them proved yet they are great strikers. It only takes 2 of them to step up though for a successful season.

Lovenkrands got a few in the last few months of our relegation season and Carroll got 3 with really limited opportunities so the promise is there.

  • 26 Wright // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:46 PM

i meant to say PACEY as in quick

  • 27 Wright // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:52 PM

ROBBY BOBSON i do agree that signs are their that lovenkrands and carrol but i also think in order to stay up we do need someone who we can rely

  • 28 slazberger // Aug 2, 2010 at 5:55 PM

i know a few mackems and they cant stop slating jones, they reckon hes the laziest player they’ve ever seen

  • 29 Captain Beefheart // Aug 2, 2010 at 6:02 PM

I just don’t want to get stuck with week-in-week-out 4-4-2 and two ‘big men’, it’s like committing suicide in the Prem. We need to mix and match depending on the opposition, and have the ability to just have one front man with various midfield / striking permutations whether 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 or even 4-3-3 against Blackpool!! Having 5 strikers adds to this flexibility and I say hoorah to that, it is wrong if the no9 has an automatic place on the team – those days are over. In a sense (whisper it) Gullit was right. It never won us nowt….

  • 30 JSYproject // Aug 2, 2010 at 6:39 PM

reading your comments about which strikers will step up etc has got me excited to see whos got it.. id love to see lovenkrands do well, he has general experience and a little craftyness around the box..and obv andy carrol and his great potential..they seem the favourites. like someone said tho, as long as the goals come it dosnt matter whos puttin them in

  • 31 Wright // Aug 2, 2010 at 6:41 PM

The team for the manu game should be
    Krul
    Perch Colo Williamson Jose
    Nolan Guthrie
    Routledge Jonas
    Vukic
    Carrol
subs: Harper Kadar best lovenkrands smith Xisco r.taylor
this team iis a average and we in my view we need a CM WIDE PLAYER DEFENDER AND A 2ND STRIKER hopefully Hughton will get us a striker in

  • 32 slazberger // Aug 2, 2010 at 6:43 PM

i cant see hughton picking vuckic for manu, hes going to have to take his chances coming off the bench to start with i think.

  • 33 baro // Aug 2, 2010 at 6:51 PM

    Wright

You should take Williamson out and add Sol Campbell. Chris Hughton and Sol Campbell said he will be a part of Rangers friendly but not tomorrow.

  • 34 muna // Aug 2, 2010 at 6:54 PM

well i think two big men will prove gud in the prem at the time we r being battered away from home..
set pieces would be essential at those forgettable moments n 2 big mens would add a lil spice to them

  • 35 burnsie // Aug 2, 2010 at 6:57 PM

dont care what any body says – one should be sold and one should be loaned……..xisco and ranger respectively. With carroll, lovenkrands, ameobi, best AND one more in KEANE would survive in the prem next year. tbh xisco is just not needed, best has replaced him now. and ranger just needs games at his age. imo, he could easily get ten-12 goals in the championship for a decent team – the cameo performances last year for us proved that, for me at least. Lets face it we will definatley be bringing in another striker AND i have never ever heard of a prem club having 7 strikers on the books, the just crazy. 2 slots, 2 on bench/waiting in wings AND one back-up just whwn we get injuries. Lads u must agree do ya???

  • 37 baro // Aug 2, 2010 at 7:18 PM

    Basically same comment? :)

  • 38 JSYproject // Aug 2, 2010 at 7:46 PM

i dont see us getting another one in burnsie.. i hope we do, dont get me wrong. i think we need(in order)… a left back, cover/competition for both wings even if its in the form of 1 ambidextrous winger and lastly i think we need a striker with some pace.

we desperately need the first 2 otherwise we will get caught short and have to play people out of position. lessening their effect in games and we dont need that

i think a striker COULD wait till january if money is tight, give the lads a go, i am confident we have enough quality there to stay up. but hey, if the money is there and the right players then why not. will definitely need to be moving a few one if we stay up anyway. but we should really make sure we have a full squad and cover before we start being picky…

  • 39 Toon1978 // Aug 2, 2010 at 7:51 PM

Surely money cannot be that bloody tight. He has just made huge profits in his stores. Plus the fact he has only spent 2 million or so on Perch.

  • 40 slazberger // Aug 2, 2010 at 8:33 PM

i know i keep going over the same thing but the profit ashley makes with his stores has nothing to do with newcastle, they are completely different companies

Hmm tomorrow’s match gonna be Interesting :)
    I’d go for
    ———————–Krul————————–
    Raylor——Colo——-William——-Enrique
    Routledge—-Guthrie—-Nolan——Xisco/Jonas
    —————-Carroll——Best———

If jonas is with the Squad..but not really sure -.-

Back on topic, can I just say that for long periods in the last few months I have felt like a minority, because I have been backing Best to come good. It’s fantastic to see people singing his praises on this thread. Fair enough, he will never be Shearer in terms of prolificy, however, he’s a different type of player. I personally think he did everything since Jan, but hit the back of the net, and I love the way that in a set piece free kick he will stand in the centre, then drift to the corner taking 2 centre half’s and possibly a full back with him creating attacking space in the box. A good player, who will perform in the prem. Even if his goals are not many, his contribution is awesome.

G – i think theirs a few who havent been given long enough on the pitch to prove themselves. andy carroll has proved and said himself you need to play regular games over a period of time to get into the flow of the team and for the team to adjust to you. plus the confidence of knowing you wont be droped immediately from one average preformance.

i think the team tomorrow will depend on how long each player played on saturday

  • 64 jackdnufc // Aug 2, 2010 at 11:02 PM

Newcastle United Football Club are preparing a move for John Pantsil.

Chris Hughton led the Magpies to the Championship title last season, and he is now preparing his squad for their return to the Premier League.

James Perch, Dan Gosling and Sol Campbell have already been added to the ranks, and the News of the World claim a move for Pantsil is in the offing.

It is believed United are prepared to pay £1million for the Ghanaian international defender, who has just twelve months remaining on his contract at Fulham.

However, Craven Cottage manager Mark Hughes, installed just a matter of days ago, is likely to block any player sales until he has had the opportunity to look at his squad in closer detail.”

-Sounds like a pile of crap. It’s frustrating when there’s no rumours on positions or players we’re actually interested in!

    From the daily mail.

Erm no you retards, hes talking to YOU! not the fans. Haha they get called an idiot and pass on the blame. Ashley is so god dam right to ban them!

  • 69 Colombus // Aug 3, 2010 at 1:44 AM

We only need 3 more quality signings!

I have said this before and I will say it again: Bring in a new argentinian in Jose Ernesto Sosa who plays for Bayern. I think he would fit right in and he would be available at a good price. He can play on either wing or as a creative midfielder and is excactly what we need. Would be a quality signing!

As for striker I really think we should look towards France, Erding would cost about 7 mill and isnt a bad alternative at all, but I think for 7- 10 we would actually get Asamoah Gyan. I’m surprised that no bigger clubs have come in for him and he would love playing for a crowd like ours. Another brilliant striker in France is Kevin Gameiro.

I also think we should look to strengthen our defensive holder in midfield. Smith is probably gonna get banned all the time because of yellow cards and he just isn’t all that. The perfect replacement/alternative would be Anthony Annan of norwegian Rosenborg. He impressed a lot during the wc and he could be on his way to a “small” club like olympiakos for a fee of 1,5 – 2 mill. Would be coup who would save us many many points next year. Get in!

my 3 signings: Sosa, Gyan, Annan. cost: 12-15 mill.

  • 70 Brutooon // Aug 3, 2010 at 4:55 AM

First Eleven Striker would be Carroll and Lovenkrands

    Backup (according to rankings)
    1)Ameobi
    2)Best
    3)Xisco
    4)Ranger

Remember we will get injured so best if we loan ranger to a championship side that ensure first team football for him

  • 71 saroof // Aug 3, 2010 at 5:11 AM

colombus is absolutley right….gyan is the man to get….tireless worker, has that extra yard of pace to burn and would be available for 5 or 6 million……

Miroslav Klose would just be awesome. Despite his age he can still score did you see him play for Germany? Nearly broke legendary Brazilain Ronaldo’s record! Plus he missed a match for a red card. If we get him than we will be unstoppable at headers. Him and Carroll. Unstoppable in the air.

  • 74 chuck // Aug 3, 2010 at 11:31 AM

Amazing, guy scores a couple of times and the fans come out of the woodwork praising him !
Where were you guys when everyone was slagging him, for a while he was considered a joke, a terrible signing, how come those praisung him to-day did`nt say shit when that was happening ?
It was obvious even when he did`nt score that he was a team player, contributing in othr ways.
Trapitoni, a better manager than his Italian counterpart @England imo, gave him his opportunity and he has played well for the Irish side, not to mention his goal tally for Coventry.
Question is will he continue to receive the fans support if he has a dry spell scoring wise or will he get the sheeplike treatment he got earlier?

  • 75 G // Aug 3, 2010 at 2:17 PM

  • 76 Stuart // Aug 3, 2010 at 6:01 PM

I’d love to see Gyan at newcastle next season like. I reckon he’d definately get a first team slot alongside Carroll. Imo at the minute we don’t have any strikers that will get us 15+ goals next season but I’m not too concerned as last season we were getting goals from all over the pitch.
