Leon Best Starting To Show What He’s Made Of

Newcastle have six strikers fighting it out in pre-season, and it’s fairly obvious that one or two of these will be loaned out for next season.

Leon Best – will get his chance this season?

However, we have to think the likely two to be loaned out are Xisco and young Nile Ranger, and we think Leon Best will get his chance to prove he is a Premiership-class  player next season.

Best had a bad start to his career but has been bright in pre-season and has got two good opportunist goals.

Some reports over the weekend said that Newcastle may be prepared to loan out Best this season, but we think he just needs time – just as Kevin Nolan did when he first arrived at Newcastle.

The Ireland international has impressed so far in pre-season with two goals in his last two outings, and he’s looked more than decent up front.

Best told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle today:

“You can play well as a striker, and not score, and play badly, and score a hat-trick,”

“I just need to keep finding the net, really.” “That’s what I’ve not done as much in my career, and probably helped others, but if I keep scoring, I’ll get pats on my back.”

“The lads welcomed me with open arms as soon as I came.” “I didn’t get the goal early, and it was like I could never score, so hopefully this season’s going to be different for me.”

“I’ve got my first goal, and I’m just going to keep striving.”

Leon has got it tioght there – he just needs to keep finding the net as he has done in his last two appearances and his goal on Saturday was out of nothing as he put the ball home from a great free kick form the left wing by the impressive Ryan Taylor.

Goals lift sides, and that’s exactly what his two goals have done for Newcastle – and we hope it’s also lifted the spirits of Leon himself, because he’s starting to show he has the ability to succeed on Tyneside – if given a little time.

We’ll put up a poll and let us know which two strikers you’d like to see start for Newcastle next season – each reader will have two votes.

If he starts scoring, the “pats on the back” and general praise and support will happen

I thought he had a bigger affect in away games than lovenkrands.

He is relatively young and has pace and strength so there is no reason why he shouldnt succeed.

If his strike against Plymouth went in that struck the bar would have went in there would be a different perception of him. As Hughton said, when Carroll and McLoven are scoring for fun its hard to make an impact.

i agree with davybtoon ,some players need longer than others too find their form at a new club and when he joined Carroll and Lovenkrands where scoring for fun . Lets face it how many games did he start and play the full 90 minutes ? a striker needs time on the pitch to start a scoring streak and he did not get a lot of time . The lad does imo have something to offer .

Personally I think we should keep Carroll, Lovern, Best, Xisco & loan out Ranger, maybe we could loan ranger to Blackpool or another club like Forest maybe to give him 1st team football… but I would defo get shot of shola, he’s had way too many years in the PL to prove himself & failed everytime, so it’s time to go Shola!!!

Too right, Robby. I felt for the lad as he really deserved the break after such unselfish play on previous outings. At present I prefer him to Nile, tbh, at least he knows where the barn door is even if he does forget the banjo at times.

Just to remind folks, Shola (like Harper) is on a ‘lifetime local contract’, sealed with blood and signed at the 4 Lane Ends crossroads.

The other signatory to the contract for Shola’s soul is the Zombie Count Westwood, the unseen but always felt vampiric presence that still stalks the director’s box at SJP.

And neither Shola nor Steve will EVER again be free agents… (cue spooky organ music) ….ha ha ha ha HA HA HA HA!

its also worth noting that the press are using these blogs, so lets support the team people. most things on here are up for debate and thats what i like about it but the press will take one side of an argument from here to suit the story they want to write making us look like a laughing stock to the rest of the world

Agree with u mate. I dont care who scores.. If we win and Leon Best played in the game, he has done his part. He probably made some runs creating space for whoever scored:)

Lets not ruin our strikers confidence just because they don’t score regularly. We have 5 strikers now which is perfect. And all are decent players too. We have competition for the starting 11, and we have cover for injuries.
Of course I would like a superstar striker for our club, but lets finish top10 in the EPL and continue to build a stronger foundation in the squad. We are now so lucky to have a group of players who actually love the club. It has been a while since we had something like that.

Wright…you say get Jones, but he wasnt proved in the prem a few years ago and never really banged them in for fun in the premiership.

I do agree we seem to have alot of good strikers, but none of them proved yet they are great strikers. It only takes 2 of them to step up though for a successful season.

Lovenkrands got a few in the last few months of our relegation season and Carroll got 3 with really limited opportunities so the promise is there.

I just don’t want to get stuck with week-in-week-out 4-4-2 and two ‘big men’, it’s like committing suicide in the Prem. We need to mix and match depending on the opposition, and have the ability to just have one front man with various midfield / striking permutations whether 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 or even 4-3-3 against Blackpool!! Having 5 strikers adds to this flexibility and I say hoorah to that, it is wrong if the no9 has an automatic place on the team – those days are over. In a sense (whisper it) Gullit was right. It never won us nowt….

The team for the manu game should be
    Krul
    Perch Colo Williamson Jose
    Nolan Guthrie
    Routledge Jonas
    Vukic
    Carrol
subs: Harper Kadar best lovenkrands smith Xisco r.taylor
this team iis a average and we in my view we need a CM WIDE PLAYER DEFENDER AND A 2ND STRIKER hopefully Hughton will get us a striker in

well i think two big men will prove gud in the prem at the time we r being battered away from home..
set pieces would be essential at those forgettable moments n 2 big mens would add a lil spice to them

dont care what any body says – one should be sold and one should be loaned……..xisco and ranger respectively. With carroll, lovenkrands, ameobi, best AND one more in KEANE would survive in the prem next year. tbh xisco is just not needed, best has replaced him now. and ranger just needs games at his age. imo, he could easily get ten-12 goals in the championship for a decent team – the cameo performances last year for us proved that, for me at least. Lets face it we will definatley be bringing in another striker AND i have never ever heard of a prem club having 7 strikers on the books, the just crazy. 2 slots, 2 on bench/waiting in wings AND one back-up just whwn we get injuries. Lads u must agree do ya???

i dont see us getting another one in burnsie.. i hope we do, dont get me wrong. i think we need(in order)… a left back, cover/competition for both wings even if its in the form of 1 ambidextrous winger and lastly i think we need a striker with some pace.

we desperately need the first 2 otherwise we will get caught short and have to play people out of position. lessening their effect in games and we dont need that

i think a striker COULD wait till january if money is tight, give the lads a go, i am confident we have enough quality there to stay up. but hey, if the money is there and the right players then why not. will definitely need to be moving a few one if we stay up anyway. but we should really make sure we have a full squad and cover before we start being picky…
