Are Newcastle Close To Signing Uruguayan Egidio Arevalo?

We had an article on Arevallo Rios a little while ago,  and the news then was that the player had been offered to Newcastle for around £2M.

Egídio Arévalo Ríos – Uroguayan World Cup defensive midfielder

Rios played defensive midfield for Uruguay in their very successful world cup campaign, and Greek club Olympiakos were in talks to sign the player,  but reports in Greece are now saying those talks have broken down.

Reports are also that Newcastle United have had a €2.5M bid accepted, and that the player himself has agreed terms.

However, we have no idea if these reports are true, and Rios is 28 years old and a little old for what Chris Hughton may be looking for.

But we also need to sign another defensive midfielder to replace the departed Nicky Butt – so at least in that way this would make sense.  We would think this would be an excellent signing for Newcastle – and he would fight it out with Alan Smith for defensive midfield duties.

Again, we are being alerted by some of our readers that this news is being broadcast in both Greece and Italy.

Egidio Arevalo currently plays for Club Atlético Peñarol in Montevideo, Uruguay – and has played 9 times for Uruguay.

Comments welcome.

this would a great signing but surely midfield is the last place we need to strengthen unless its an attacking mid! we need a striker or attacking mid and maybe cover for full backs but surely not a centre mid!

People are underestimating how many players we actual need. There isn’t enough quality there right now.

Arevalo would be a great signing.

Strange that Ashley came out and informed us all that players that are under the age of 25 will NOT be signed and limited funds ill be provided but what has been happening says very different has he had a change of hart or something? or do you think he has come into a lot of money?

Smith has been told he will not be used very often if our targets come off and we sign them, so I’d assume arevalo is coming, and smith would only be used in away games if arevalo was injured. IMO arevalo is very much needed. According to le’quipe we have sealed the Ben arfa deal. Very happy if true

At a total loss on this whole issue, one minute we are favourites to sign Arfa, then he looks like going to Westham even thought there is no source to say that. Then we look the be on the verge of signing Arevalo…………so much gossip its great being a toon fan but all to often let down as hopes rise for the signing of a big player like Arfa only for it not to happen. Got my hopes right up there for ARFA and scouring the internet for further news only to find very little. I give up, just sit and wait n see what happens. Cmon NUFC get these signings done so we can stuff Rangers on Saturday lol.

gerrard I seen allot more of weiss and ohara than I have of arevalo, this foreigner knows nout about this league and it could take him a solid year to fit in whereas weiss ad ohara are proven pemier league quality.

Weiss is nowhere near epl proven man, Ohara is much the same as Barton, Guthrie and Nolan. We need an arevalo type player.

Please let this be true. He was fantastic at the World Cup and really I said to my girlfriend during the semi’s against the Dutch that he would be a very good player to have at Newcastle.

    And if Smith goes to Ranger that would be ideal. Arevalo is a real CDM, Smith is played in that positions because he failed as a striker. In the year we went down, lots on her keep blaiming the so called big stars (Owen, Martins, …). Okay they were not valuable at all. But a big problem also was the CDM position;

    – Butt became too slow and gave away too many free kicks.

    – Smith like mentionned before isn’t a CDM. Every game yellow, stupid tackles at dangerous positions.

Let’s hope this is announced quite soon (maybe together with Arfa).

tom_toon you predict that arvelo is much better than Ohara, that is impossible to tell,
    look at the facts
    ohara-proven premier league quality.

I don’t actually believe we need another CM player. We’ve got Nolan, Barton, Guthrie, Gosling (when fit) and Smith. That’s 5 good English players (not necessarily great, but good enough for now).

On the wing we have Jonas and Routledge who are both good, and R. Taylor who is OK as backup. We need a midfielder. I would say a bid for Weiss makes a lot of sense. They would likely accept smallish money and he has the right profile. That should see us settled in midfield.

In defense we have Simpson and Perch at RB. Neither are really good enough, but OK, here’s hoping they will be solid and not be left too exposed. At CB we have Coloccini, Sol, S. Taylor and Mike Williamson. That’s enough there, esp. with Kadar/Perch being able to cover. At LB I feel like we are horribly exposed. We must sign a backup for Enrique… Believe we sould go for Oscar Wendt from FC Copenhagen. If we want to stay British, how about Shorey?

Up front… sigh. Fine giving Andy Carroll the opportunity to play the big number 9 but we are desperately missing a goalscorer with more footballing quality. If Robbie Keane or Pavlychenko become excess at Tottenham, I would like either of them. Up front we have plenty of quantity but do we have enough quality? I don’t think so.

SO, signings for me would be:

Winger (pref. left wing if not both-sided)

yeh if we manage arevalo and ben arfa that would make us a much better overall squad….. get a proven striker as well and were well on our way! smith may not be what he used to but his effort and passion for the club is amazing and i think he would be good to keep as a squad player!

Arevalo was good at the WC. But his partner in crime PEREZ was 10 times better. PEREZ made Arevalo look better than he actually was.

Not saying he’s bad, but not as good as you might think. He lack’s pace for sure, and some passing ability (my opinion). Not worth 2m. 600k would be a decent price for him. (again.. my opinion)

And as so many others say.. we don’t need a CDM.

And the last rant: Smith out ! He’s not a good footballer.

think if we do go for a defensive midfeilder which I dont think we should, then we should buy a 6 ft 5 powerhouse, Engelaar was outstanding for PSVwon everything in the middle, if we could get a 21-22 year old with the same build then we are flying.
    fabrice muamba perhaps

For those who don’t want Arevalo, who replaces Smith or Barton if they get hurt or suspended (or in Barton’s case, in trouble with the law), all of which aren’t out of the question? You need some cover at the position. Arevalo played well at the WC & I’d figure he’s fairly cheap.

Arevalo played OK. Perez, as I mentioned earlier, was all over the place so Arevalo didnt have to do much running.

CM: Barton, Guthrie, Nolan, Smith = 2 players in cover

Wingers: Gutierrez, Routledge…….. = 0 players in cover. (perhaps xisco or McLoven, but still we need a clean winger)

I totally agree that he would be an excellent replacement for Smith, but i think those 2 mill should be used to secure Ben Arfa or any other player that would do more to completing our squad.

@29, that wouldn’t be allowed by the epl. The fee would have to buy his registration & the owners would have to split the fee. There’s another transfer going thro at the moment which is much the same, I think its the lad going from benfica to chelsea.

Smith is far too slow for the premiership plus he has a habit of giving away silly free kicks which in the premiership will get punished as we were lucky to get away with what we did at times last season. Get him off the wage bill and sign Arevalo who is a genuine DM and will come on half the salary Smith is on.

Smith is on 60k a week, this guy would jump at the chance for 10k a week! I think you all underestimate how little players like this get paid now or even if they transfer to mid-to-good italian teams etc. They’d be lucky to get 10k a week!

Also Nolan is pretty unfit, Barton – who knows what will happen, Guthrie fine, Gosling injured for a while.

    We definitely need Arevalo.

Hes 28. He in his primer for the next 2-3 years.

Short. Well it seems most of the best tenacious defensive mids are short.

Who cares if he’s foreign hes better than all the affordable and many unaffordable english options.
