Hughton – We Cannot Cope Without New Players Arriving

Chris Hughton has today admitted that without new players arriving in the summer transfer window, Newcastle could be too stretched with their current squad.

Chris Hughton – needs more players coming in

And Chris could still be looking to strengthen the back four, and after watching Manchester United score three goals against Chelsea yesterday, that may be a good thing.

This is what Chris told the Newcastle Journal this morning:

“I think we would be stretched if nobody was to come in before the end of the month,”

“At the moment, we must remember that, in terms of the defence, we have Danny Simpson who’ll be missing for seven or eight games and Steven Taylor who will be out for even longer. That’s two of our biggest players missing.”

“I think we would be stretched if we don’t add. That doesn’t mean that we can’t get through, and it doesn’t mean that if we’re fortunate with injuries, we couldn’t cope. But we could be stretched and we’re aware of that.”

“It’s about doing the right deal. We’re having a lot of players offered to us on a daily basis. There are players being offered all the time – some you know better than others, some you don’t know at all.”

“That’s what this market is like; that’s what the transfer window does.”

If we can get Hatem Ben Arfa through the door on loan this week , and that now looks like a good possibility, and say two other good players we should be in good shape, but of course we need those players to be more than decent.

The good news is that Chris knows now that Newcastle don’t have enough players through the door, and before the end of August rolls around we could have 6 new players added to the squad.

One thing we like a lot about Chris is he shows a lot of common sense and so far in January and this summer he’s made some very decent signings for the Newcastle club.

Comments welcome.

our squad isnt big enough to get rid of anyone, wish people would bloody well realise that.

while smith ameobi and ryan taylor may not be top class prem stars, we still need them in case of injuries etc.

    use your brains, people.

Been saying that since promotion !
Ben Arfa, Prince Boatang and Onuoha would be a start, but face it we should all realise Ashley`s only interested in staying up and eventually selling.
Probably get a couple more second tier plodders
and perhaps a loanee or two.
Dont raise your expectations or you will be dissapointed, second tier here we come again.
Instead of following the Arsenal model, we have chosen to become the next West Brom, an elevator team!

    @ Chris F (5)

Yes I realise our squad is somewhat threadbare to say the least, and I wouldnt expect to get rid of players without having a replacement.

    @ Wright (4)

Having agreed with you before on R.Taylor, I now disagree, I saw him come on against Rangers and he looked lively and wanted to be on the ball. Not a bad squad player really.

    @ Sweendog (7)

Yes, Rangers took the P. down the right, Perch just doesnt look comfortable there, Routledge saved his ar$e once or twice, Very week down that side of the pitch.

We cannot get rid of anybody – unless his name is Ashley of course – but we do need some quality, pace and flair in the midfield. We need wingers and playmakers. Players who realise intelligence is more than a job at MI5.

We have a squad of 25 right now. If we get anyone in well need to loan or sell Ranger, Xisco, Smith. I dont see rtayls moving on with Simpson and stayls out injured.

I wish Carlisle had thumped us 6-0, then Chris might have woken up the fact we are not good enough. A week to go, and out Prem starting XI is the same as April’s Fizzy starting XI + Perch. Nolan, Smith & Ameobi should be sold – no pace between ’em and no point keeping ’em. R Taylor is not a a first choice player, ditto Simpson who even looked fazed in the Fizzy, S Taylor has got a permanent sick note, Big Andy looks lost and Harps couldn’t keep a clean sheet in a laundry at the moment (he had a poor end to the season in April as well).

Arfa is not a miracle panacea (just as Pancrate wasn’t), and I think the only solution is to put some faith in the youngsters and exiles – even if they blow a few games. Forster, Kadar, Vukic, Ranger, Xisco and Krul should all be there or thereabouts. Our depleted substandard Prem journeymen often looked far from fabtastic in the Fizzy – and Lordy, oh Lordy am I dreading the Man U match after this dismal pre-season malaise?

    Wakey, wakey…!

PS: I like Chris, but unless he’s trying to fool everyone watching his tactics have been utterly ineffective in all the pre-season games save the 0-0 in Spain (but no goals). We were second best vs Norwich, PSV & Rangers.

Beefheart, Nolan… Really? The man scored 17 goals last season, and was voted player of the season if I recall correctly.

Smith had a great start to last season in the fizzy pop, but didnt do that well in the second part of it. But he is one of the players we have with the most prem experience.

Ameobi started last campaign insanely well, but was injured alot after that. He is our most experienced striker.

Whats up with the doom and gloom all before the season has started? why cant you wait and see? Chris did extremely well last season (102 points). And he has now admitted he wants more players. If Ashley doesnt spit out some coins, then he will bring in some loanees. Chris is our main man! Keep the faith.

And PS: I agree with you on the part about our youngsters, but if their not good enough for the starting line-up, then they arent!

    Howay the lads!

Captain beefheart, You’re really judging hughton on his “Utterly Ineffective” tactics from our Preseason games??

Pre-season is geared around getting the players fit and sharp, by simply playing them, I really dont think the game tactics will be a huge priority, especially as the first half team is almost completely different to the second halfs.

Ben Arfa and Kevin Prince Boateng are two of the most ceative players. Just what we need.

Both are good players, most would like to see them here. Ben arfa looking more like a possibility, but i hope we jump in to Boateng. He is quite a beast!
