Who Is Hatem Ben Arfa?

Hatem Ben Arfa is a French International of Tunisian descent, who plays at Ligue 1 club Olympique de Marseilles, and hopefully will be coming on a season long loan deal to  Newcastle United.

Hatem Ben Arfa –  23 year old 5’11” winger or central midfielder

Ben Arfa plays as a winger, usually on the left side and can also play as an attacking central midfielder.

Ben Arfa is a true talent but one thing that has worried Newcastle fans over the last few weeks, is his lack of discipline.

In his youth career he played for various clubs as follows:

Year Team
1994–1996	ASV Châtenay-Malabry
1996–1998	Montrouge CF 92
1998–1999	AC Boulogne-Billancourt
1999–2002	INF Clairefontaine
2002–2004	Lyon

He continued to play for Lyon is his senior career before moving to Marseilles in 2007.

Year Team
2004–2008 Lyon 87 11
2008– Marseilles 91 15

France National team:
Years Team Apps Goals
2002–2003 France U16 10	7
2003–2004 France U17 17 11
2005 France U18 4 0
2005–2006 France U19 6	1
2007 France U21 1	0
2007– France 7	1

Ben Arfa was labelled a star in the making at a very young age, and when he was considering a move from Lyon in 2008,  Everton, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Spanish club Real Madrid were all interested in the youngster.

The 5’11” midfielder eventually signed for Olympique Marseilles, where he has played over 90 games for the French Champions since then.

This lad should make a big difference in class to the Newcastle squad, but he will be a challenge for manager Chris Hughton – who must keep him under control and instill some discipline into the lad, so he does not harm the great spirit that currently exists at Newcastle.

If Chris can do that he will make Ben Arfa a better player,  and if  the youngster  does well next season, he could well become a permanent player at Newcastle next summer.

Gotta say would be well impressed if we can get him on loan with an option to buy, he could give us the edge in tight games.

Anybody think we still need a striker with a reasonable record at this level – presuming there is one in our price range??

Along with Weiss on loan and I think we will have the pace the team needs. Combined with Routledge and Jonas I think Arfa and Weiss could do nicely. Now – who is going to be the midfield schemer? Who will be another like the golden boy from the valleys?

    @ ericles
i think joey barton, if he can stay fit and out of trouble, is a more than able midfield schemer. his range of passing and movement impressed me a lot against rangers. however they certainly are big “ifs”

We need a ball playing CM what we have is to slow, not in their locker at this level, or avent the legs, kevin prince yes please and id take Jimmy bullard if hull pay half hes wages, and some1 like keane, mcfadden, or even sturridge from cheaslea up front, serious concerns over colo see the way he lost miller for the first goal on sat? if he does that in the PL he’ll get eaten alive every week.

Judging from those stats Ben Arfa plays a lot of games doesn’t he? doesn’t seem to get injured much which is massive for us, need somebody reliable.
Robbie Keane would be the icing on the cake for me, bit of a journeyman but he scores goals wherever he goes and himself and Carroll would be great topgether I think. Ship out Best&Shameobi for good, keep Lovenkrands and Xisco and I think we’d do well

John, Ben arfa is surely a ball player isnt he? otherwise why sign him?? He is not gonna diplace Guttierez on the left ,thats for sure, and he wont be satisifed with warming the bench.

I think you also may find that it was Williamson who lost Miller??? Colo tried to come across to help out form what i made out.

granted Keane would be a decent signing buit he is nearer the 30 mark than the 20……Mcfadden, not a good goals record im afraid and no better than Mcloven, and sturridge is a big part of Chelski plans this season!!

I say go and get Bellars back, yes there is the age thing, but the kid was one of the stars of last seasons EPL and I have it on decent authority that he would crawl back to St James if given the chance!!!

    What talks?
There are no talks needed if a loan deal is agreed, the loan is between the clubs, the player just says yes or no, no talks required!

    IMO SSN = Bull$hit

His problems are his work rate (as lazy as robert), inconsistency and his occasionally bad decision making. I think his best position for us would be just behind the striker, where he doesn’t really need to do much defending. Good that he’s coming on loan; he’s too risky to be permanent deal. Might be a failure… or might be the vital final jigsaw in the line-up.

if this deal comes off it is perfect and a real testiment to how well this club is run nowadays. We get to test drive this lad virtually risk free. Best of all, CH will surely still have some funds left to bring in another quality signing or 2 decent squad players for depth. This week should be the week we see 2 new faces come in as now teams can’t hold off any longer. And surely CH already has something lined up and was just waiting on the result of this deal and other teams. If it comes i wouldn’t be surprised if we brought in another attackminded player and a defender. Then give our strikers a chance for 3/4 months, and pounce on some classy striker in jan that a team won’t want to lose for nowt. Depending on the quality coming in i think our squad will hold 15th to possi 12 (at best) then with 1 or 2 key additions in jan, maybe even push for a max 8th.
That being said, with the current squad we’ll be lucky to finish anywhere above 15.
I have faith in how this club is being run and i have faith in sir hoots. I believe he already has a plan and a vission for this season. He’s oiling up the machine and if given the chance he will have it fine tuned in no time.

The talks with hatem are to agree the personal terms on the deal after the loan I presume, this is an unbelievable deal and one I never thought would happen, now for arevalo, kpb or Annan please.

Arevalo would be a welcome addition too ..
As for Arfa negotiations .. he was offered more money to go to Ruben K .. but chose us .. so some delicate negotiations on salary is needed .. bit of a coup if this happens.. he’s a strong playmaker IMO and would slot in behind carrol .. imagine him feeding Gutierrez/Carrol/routledge .. you’ve got the makings of a good/very good attack

Sweendog, Totally agree re Shay Given!!
The lad was the best keeper i have ever saw at St James and give good years of service….but loyalty has to come into question when you see the bling of the big boys and the money they could offer…..Big Al never went for that!!

Shay can blame the board, lack of ambition, the lot, fine Mr Given, but could surely have waited until the end of the season in which you left us in the lurch, complaining of your knee injury three days before your switch to the Money City…..and then strolled through the medical!!

Sorry, no room for sentiment if there is no place for loyalty in todays game im afraid, just ask Stevey Harper.

Sweendog. tbh, id rather start with Krul anyway…with the expeience of Harper as back up.
I think the lad will go right to the top, and deservedly so. I think we are building a very good young team and as an avid Mike Cashley hater, I actually believe if he continues in the same vein as he is things may look at little rosier in the dull january months.

I always said i would be willing to eat humble pie if Cashley proved me wrong, now he has made a small step towards doing that, I am more than willing to eat a small step of humble pie….

But always in the back of my mind i remember the Modric, and the Arshavin scenario from the last 2 years…..when we virtually (supposed to have) had them in the bag, only to be gazumped at last minute by spuds and arseyhole at the last Minute.

So i am not willing to accept the HBA signing until he is sat at the press conference with his stripes on 😉
