Newcastle Visit Accrington Stanley In Carling Cup

Accrington Stanley will now be looking forward to one of the biggest games in their history, after getting the famous Newcastle United club at home, in the second round of the Carling Cup.

The League Two side, who are based in Accrington, Lancashire (that’s a surprise), and founded in 1968,  beat Doncaster Rovers to earn the home tie against Newcastle, who are of course back in the PL, after being out just one year – but ran away with the Championship by 11 points last season.

Accrington reached the fourth round of the FA Cup last year before losing 3-1 to Fulham, so Newcastle will be expecting a tough game, and they will never under-rate any side, with Chris Hughton in charge on Tyneside.

Sunderland will host Colchester United and the matches will be played in the week starting August 23rd.

Here is the Carling Cup – Second round draw

Accrington v Newcastle
Portsmouth v Crystal Palace
Leeds v Leicester
Wolverhampton v Southend

MK Dons v Blackpool
Tranmere v Swansea
Everton v Huddersfield
Peterborough v Cardiff
Reading v Northampton

I remember the Stevenage-games….If we hadn’t had Shearer around for those, we would have been thumped..
