Chris Hughton Very Very Confident Of New Players Arriving

12:16 pm, Friday, August 13th, 2010 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 47 Comments

Chris Hughton is still working hard to bring in new players to Newcastle before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Chris Hughton – still very hopeful of new players arriving

While Newcastle have come to a halt with the Ben Arfa deal, at least at the moment, they are very sensibly refusing to get into a war of words about the deal with the Marseilles club, and are at least showing a bit of class.

And indeed, Newcastle are still said to be quietly confident of closing that particular deal, which is interesting news indeed.

Hughton is also working hard on other targets on his list and he has told the Newcastle fans the club is still pushing for new arrivals:

“We’re still pushing, we’re in it with most clubs and it is quite difficult to get the players you want at the price you want in the present market.”

“I’m still very, very hopeful of bringing players in before the window shuts.”

And as we reported on a couple of days back, Newcastle are giving a  trial to 17 year-old former Chelsea left-sided player Billy Knott, who played for the Newcastle Reserves side against St Mirren in a 2-2 draw this week.

Chris continued:

“He’s a young lad who is just on trial with us.” “We have got a couple at the moment. They’re not around the first team at the moment, but we’ll see.”

We’d like to see some more youngsters come into the club this summer, and Billy would be a great addition to the Newcastle youth ranks, with little downside and a whole lot of upside to that particular player.

Comments welcome.

Must admit, I had faith that Hughton would surprise us. Thats faded fast, and now the worry is starting….

    not hughtons fault,its fat ashleys.

We have a couple of young lads on trial with us?
Stephen Sunday is a definite possibility.

  • 7 MacToon // Aug 13, 2010 at 12:28 PM

“difficult to get the players you want at the price you want in the present market.”

Well that’s no surprise, being given sod all to improve and strengthen the team/squad was never gonna be easy.

Jonas on a Webster, Gosling on a contract error and now Afra, there is a pattern forming!

hughton is just doing what he is told, hes the front man.

what we should remember it was Hughton that told us we had money to buy players, and since that time expectations have risen, now it seems that it is Ashley that is picking out targets, this I don’t have a problem with, Hatem Ben Arfa if Ashley is behind the interest everyone I have spoken to thinks the capture of him as the difference between a good season & relegation, we have a chance to do a deal at a good price, and he will fill the empty seats. this could pay for itself.

  • 12 G-Man // Aug 13, 2010 at 12:38 PM

Same old, same old, end of transfer window bargain basement buys that no one else wants it look’s like, sad & pathetic, absolutely no excuse.

what happened to gui assulin?heard blackburn had him on trail after the 18 yr cancelled his barca contract.apparently he had the potential to be the next messi?then i read in a paper that city ‘had snapped up the 34mil rated player for free?’.well i dnt knw,but its a yng player we should be after.well hope we get some quality in,be not to be negative, hwtl!

  • 14 howay man // Aug 13, 2010 at 12:46 PM

roe997, hughton said we have a couple of young lads on trial with us, maybe this whole ben arfa thing is a smokescreen to snap up Gai Assulin. ;)

  • 15 chubzman // Aug 13, 2010 at 12:48 PM

me like most toon fans would like to seen ben arfa in a black n white shirt but cant see it happening, if it was going to happen than it would of done a week ago, but we can all hope cant we :)

  • 16 Vest // Aug 13, 2010 at 12:54 PM

Just remember, City have 39 players on contract and can only use 25 of those. There are 14 players that don’t want to be at City and not play. And that is just City. There will be other young players that will leave their clubs in the last week or two.

Expect NUFC to be ready to snap up someone young and promising.

Btw Jóan Símun Edmundsson signed a permanent contract on Wednesday. He is 19 and very promising. Signed a one year with an option on an other year.

    GOOOOO TOOOOON ! ! !

I remember under Freddie when Roeder was manager saying the same as CH at every transfer window. He usually failed to bring them in! Started a season without back up full backs to Carr and Babayaro (who were crap and always injured)! Ended up with the sack! I smell the same happening, but prey I am wrong.

  • 19 Obafan // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:00 PM

I think it is smart from the club to try to solve the deals as private as possible, but I also think it is very important to have your squad before the season starts. Now they still try to get a few players and when it fails, then there will be a few panic reations. Remember: Xisco; Nacho and the whole turmoil that followed in the 1st week of September 2008.

  • 20 roe997 // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:02 PM

remember, new squad rules, you can have as many players as you want under 21.so city can hold on to some of the ynger players.

  • 21 a.l 9 // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:26 PM

So Bellamy could be off to Fulham now, SURELY we are more of an interest than Fulham!

But yeah, he is apparntly too old so we won’t buy the lad (or anyone else who will improve our squad for that matter).

Robbie Keane another one who could leave his club, again another one who would vastly improve our squad. Apparantly too old though… (This is f-ing tiresome now.)

Both premiership proven, both in the strange situation where we could actualy get them for a cut price AND there isn’t exactly a host of clubs in for there signature. For both it’s glaringly obvios that we should attempt to bring them here, but we will try for neither. This I wouldn;t mind if we have someone else lined up, but if not then we go into this season withought a proven goalscorer, and probably the worst strikers in the league.

  • 22 bill // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:35 PM

“I’m still very, very hopeful of bringing players in before the window shuts.”

The word CH uses is “hopeful” not confident, there is a big difference.

The usual will happen – no one of note will arrive and we will get the usual responses from CH about it being a difficult market – well yes Chris it is when aren’t prepared to pay for players.

  • 23 Obafan // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:46 PM

Why did Ashley buy the club a couple of years ago? He has got lucky that we are back in the EPL after only one season. He sould realise that he needs to invest in the team or we might be back in the CC next season and then he will lose a lot of money (tv, …).

  • 24 G-Man // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:47 PM

It once was a great club with a beautiful history, but now . . .” quote from the Marseille president on Newcastle, how right he is…….

  • 25 deeeeeeano // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:48 PM

Na, feeling more and more like the last few windows where we sit glued to SSN waiting and waiting for some news then POOF!! window shuts and we sign 2 15 year olds for the youth who have no relevance to our survival but are ”ones for the future”, then, we dont play the ”ones for the future” when the chance arrises and theyre talents get waisted.

  • 26 noir9 // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:49 PM

When Chris said we had money to spend, I think supporters assumed/hoped he was suggesting we had 7/9 even 10 mil…..well we don’t, we’re skint, brassic & certainly can’t afford keane or bellamy….why would they choose us even if we could…..don’t tell let me guess….we’re a big club….or perhaps because we have a big stadium?
AL 9 why would Fulham be a bigger draw than us….are u serious?

  • 27 geordielad880 // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:50 PM

im sick of all the same tripe from hughton, its a hard market, we have to compete with everyone else, even blackpool, stoke etc can get players, so surely we can manage a couple of decent loan signings, any market is difficult if you are not willing to spend money, im getting ready for a long hard season ahead.

  • 28 MacToon // Aug 13, 2010 at 1:52 PM

noir9, we could guarantee first team football though ;)

  • 29 Norwegian NUFC supporter // Aug 13, 2010 at 2:05 PM

Ben Arfa was brilliant in Wedensday’s game against Norway and could be the difference between relegation battle or midd table finish. Well worth the money, so let’s hope our terrible and cheap owner for once finds the money.
Huseklepp that scored two goals in the same month is now availible for a cut price less than 2 million pound until aug 31 due to a deal with his club. http://fotball.bt.no/eliteserien/article176901.ece
And he is a Toon supporter. We desperately need a creative midfielder, a goal scoring striker and a new owner willing to invest in the squad

  • 30 Rotonda heights // Aug 13, 2010 at 2:17 PM

great signing youth like edmundson, but when are they ever going to get a game ? Hughton just doesn’t trust younger players.

It’s looking very like route 1 to carroll again with a blanket midfield. It couldn’t really be any further removed from the days of the entertainers and we were everyone’s favourite 2nd team. We’ll just be another Stoke or Blackburn. It’s amazing how just one player like a Ben Arfa could change that.

hughton may aswell just record that speach and play it to the press every other day at the same time cos its all we hear, ” right players at right price” but notice that NOW instead of a week ago where he was “very very confident” of bringing new players in now he’s just “very very HOPEFULL” bad times ahead lads i think we’ll get a panic loan in on last day nd that’l be the lot, pathectic! how f*cking long have we had to improve the squad!? its so slow and tedious its unbearable, i so wish i was one of those fans that could just ignore everything that goes on and simply follow the football and not check hourly the latest bullsh*t that goes on at our club, i can see it now that if we dont get anyone else in of any quality it’l be “i feel we’ve strengthened our squad with numbers” or if no one at all comes in it’ll just be “im happy that i have got the players we need to do the job”
He might as well just dress as a f*cking thunderbird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

geordielad – had you heard of any of blackpools signings (except harewood) & would you have been happy to see them in toon, how many players have stoke tryed to get before they signed jones…..they did get remy to the ground but the poor sod couldn’t get away quick enough.

Chris is doing what he can with the money he has available , in the past we used to pay big wages to convince players to come (certain teams up here still do) & we can’t or won’t do that anymore.

Oh for the days when we could go out and buy the likes of Owen, Viduka, Duff, Martins, Beye, Emre, Dyer, Bowyer, Woodgate……..cos they really brought us success stability and pride didn’t they??????

yeah noir9 i had heard of all them bar 1-Malaury Martin, cathcart is a very decent player, the toon nearly signed him when we were in the fizzy on loan, but something came up on his medical. Grandin is a decent player also. And out of the players signed i probably wouldnt have any of them at the toon as i think we can do better than them.

  • 37 geordielad880 // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:04 PM

any truth in what chris 6033?? thats from 2009

  • 38 geordielad880 // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:09 PM

I annoys me also, that ashleys big policy is to invest in youth development etc, yet me have kadar, vuckic, ranger, krul etc and they arent getting chances, there is no point investing if your not going to play them, if they arent ready loan them out, reserve football does nothing for youngsters.
We also need someone with experience at the highest level, at scouting youth players, man utd have scouts based throughout the world, constantly watching players, we dont have that, we have a few scouts who we send out to watch specific players etc, we need a better network.

We are taking players on trial who bournmouth, leyton orient and scunthorpe have rejected, its like pancrate, he had a trial at sheffield united, and was deemed not good enough, then newcastle signed him up, we havent got a clue what scouting even is!!!!

  • 39 chris6033 // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:11 PM

oopps, sorry, just saw the friday 13th doh

  • 40 geordielad880 // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:15 PM

Ashleys big idea was investing in youth players etc, and developing them, and bringing them through, which is a good idea, well it is if you give the players a chance, we have krul, kadar, vuckic, and ranger who i think are good enough now, and if they arent they should be loaned out, as reserve football doesnt really help their development, they need competitive football.

We also need a decent scouting network, ours is truly terrible, man utd have scouts actually based all over the world, taking in matches throughout the season, that is what you need, to get the best young players, not just a handful of scouts you send out every so often!
We have got players on trial now who had trials with bournmouth, orient, etc and they deemed them not up to standard, why have we got them?? its like pancrate, he had a trial at sheff uts, and they said he wasnt good enough, yet we signed him up, its a shambles.

  • 42 cynicaltoonfan // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:17 PM

OM have had thier bid for fabiano Rejected it could be good news beacuse they would need to generate more money and if we could offer the loan or put in a cheeky 3-4mil bid for ben arfa he could be ours.
I know its hopefull but what else can you do as
a fan. I dont blame CH if we need Ben Arfa i think we might have to consider selling our plays ( shola or smith or r taylor ) to give us the extra money. If we get this kid and he turns it on
He could easily keep us in the prem he is that talented when on form

  • 43 Colombus // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:23 PM

As I have said before, this guy would be a brilliant alternative to Ben Arfa. Now it seems he is on his way to Italy for 3 million euro. Now that’s a bargain! http://www.goal.com/en/news/10/italy/2010/08/10/2063887/napoli-closing-in-on-bayern-munich-midfielder-jose-sosa

  • 44 Solaidback // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:56 PM

I see people keep saying that our young players playing in the reserves don’t get any competitive games,…. well yes they do, they play in the ‘Reserve League’ which as the same teams at the 1st team but for the reserves, so why do you think they don’t get competative matches????
It goes for the Youth team as well, so thats no excuse for our players not showing off what they cane do & if they’re any good in the reserves, then they should be picked for the 1st team…. oh yeah, thats what CH has already done with Krul, Ranger etc etc!!!!

As for Ben Arfa, if we got this guy, I can bet you if he’s as goos as everyone else says he is, come Jan or next summer, one fo the bigger clubs would come in & buy him off us & then what??? we’d have the same preoblem next season trying to find someone to fill that void!!

  • 45 Solaidback // Aug 13, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Btw, Ranger has scored 5 goal in the reserves pre-season fixtures, so with Best being sidelined, I hope CH will give this kid some playing time for the 1st team :)

  • 46 tjshawsey // Aug 13, 2010 at 4:12 PM

Solaidback, I have to agree. I think its important that a player has a bit of confidence before the season, and scoring goals, whatever the opposition, is a real booster for Ranger

  • 47 baro // Aug 13, 2010 at 7:25 PM

We defintley need 3 players coming in. A class striker like Craig Bellamy, a all around midfielder like Hatem Ben Arfa, and a back up left back like Kyle Naughton.
