Sol Campbell Slowly Getting Back To Full Fitness

Chris Hughton will take no chances at all with Sol Campbell’s return to fitness, and he will certainly not rush the former England International back.

Chris with Sol when the former Arsenal defender signed for the Magpies

The defender, who turns 36 next month,  is on a personalised fitness program to return him to full fitness.

But of course he will not be ready for Monday night’s game at Manchester United, and it looks like it will be at least two more weeks before the player will be ready for first team action.

With Steven Taylor and Tamas Kadar both missing for the first few weeks of the season, the task of holding the fort will be in the hands (or should that be feet?) of  Fabricio Coloccini and January signing, Mike Williamson.

Chris Hughton talked today about the fitness of Sol Campbell:

“It is a work in progress with him – he is a few weeks behind everyone else. He’s doing a specific training program.”

“He’s doing specific sessions and we just need to see how that develops.”

“The most important thing is when he is fit and available, he’s ready to keep it going through the season.”  “We don’t want to get him back and then have him break down.”

When Sol does get back to fitness and when Steven Taylor returns to full fitness in a couple of months time from his shoulder injury, there will be a monumental battle for the two central defensive positions on Tyneside – and that’s what we like to see.

Comments always welcome.

He is bound to be behind the other lads, but by the sounds of what some of the lads said that went to the open training, he is looking much better.

We need Sol match fit asap to give the defence a solid backbone. The squad is not good enough or big enough so expect the youngsters to be given a chance if we don’t start signing additional quality players……

Doha, havn’t lots of people been saying that Chris needs to play the youngsters? I wonder if they will be quite as vocal if we play them & we get regularly stuffed. Personaly think that Vukic & kadar are ready to be involved, ranger needs to play regularly so probably a loan is the best option. We certainly are desperate for 2/3 players, even if they are only on loan.

Even more so if we lose Barton imo.

This whole B’Afra affair is doin my ‘ed in. We know Ashley’s a tight errr owner so no need for the OM pres. to try and embarass him or CH.

Campbell will be ready soon, he’s a professional.

campbell wont be ready until the match after the carling cup game, so a while yet, and totally agree, any injuries to jonas, enrique, routledge etc we are screwed, and enrique and routledge do get injured quite often, collocini and jonas have pretty good injury records, especially collo

We just need to get 2 decent players on loan will cost £2 million in combined loan fees at the most, its not asking alot of the owner really, a winger, and a defender, we will just have to make do with the strikers we have at the club

Agree with you geordielad, we need a couple of players in anyway we can. Have a feeling that the ben afra saga has a long way to run yet & wouldn’t be suprised if we didn’t end up getting him. At least chris seems to be looking at the style/type of player the fans think we need, also read somewhere that cleverly might go on loan. I don’t think we’re even looking at a left back, perch is here to cover both full back positions & chris has said the trialists are not for the 1st team.
