Chris Hughton will take no chances at all with Sol Campbell’s return to fitness, and he will certainly not rush the former England International back.
Chris with Sol when the former Arsenal defender signed for the Magpies
The defender, who turns 36 next month, is on a personalised fitness program to return him to full fitness.
But of course he will not be ready for Monday night’s game at Manchester United, and it looks like it will be at least two more weeks before the player will be ready for first team action.
With Steven Taylor and Tamas Kadar both missing for the first few weeks of the season, the task of holding the fort will be in the hands (or should that be feet?) of Fabricio Coloccini and January signing, Mike Williamson.
Chris Hughton talked today about the fitness of Sol Campbell:
“It is a work in progress with him – he is a few weeks behind everyone else. He’s doing a specific training program.”
“He’s doing specific sessions and we just need to see how that develops.”
“The most important thing is when he is fit and available, he’s ready to keep it going through the season.” “We don’t want to get him back and then have him break down.”
When Sol does get back to fitness and when Steven Taylor returns to full fitness in a couple of months time from his shoulder injury, there will be a monumental battle for the two central defensive positions on Tyneside – and that’s what we like to see.
Comments always welcome.
