It looks like Gary Speed, who played at Newcastle United from 1998 until 2004, could be set to be appointed as Sheffield United’s new boss.
Gary Speed – to be appointed new Blades boss?
Speed was the assistant to Kevin Blackwell, who left the club by mutual agreement on Saturday, after Sheffield’s disappointing 3-0 defeat by QPR at Bramall Lane, when all three goals were scored in the first 24 minutes.
Speed is said to have some reservations about the transfer money avail;able to spend, but is reported to be meeting with Blades’ chairman Kevin McCabe and chief executive Trevor Birch in Spain.
Of course Gary Speed, after a tremendous playing career in which he played a total of 831 games with 133 goals, seems top material for a manager, having the leadership and know-how to become very successful.
In fact, only a few weeks ago the Sheffield club refused to let Gary interview for the job at Swansea. such was their high opinion of him.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but if he does get the job, we’ll follow his progress, just as we are with former Newcastle player and local lad – Lee Clark – who has done more than a decent job of managing Hudderfield Town so far.
Sheffield United have just one point from their first two games, but there’s plenty of time to improve that position and still 15 days left in the transfer window to wheel and deal for new players.

Comment #5Weak links – Perch, Williamson, Routledge, Smith
Uh-oh. They have none, although I fancy Jonas up against O’Shea.

Comment #6Thump, one persom you forgot, Barton, he could run mf if he’s on his game. Hopefully Jonas is up to speed now (fitness wise) as he looked out of sorts against Rangers.

Comment #8Honestly MT I’m more concerned about Smudge. If he gets his tackling a bit late, we’re down to 10 men and that’s just nailing ourselves to the cross. I’d much sooner see Guthrie in the centre, but he’s not much of a holding MF.

Comment #11I think that Hughton is just going for raw strength, guts and determination in the midfield today.
Hopefully Nolan and link up with Carroll when we do have possession though, I hope he isn’t too deep. They’re only playing a 2 man central midfielder so he shouldn’t have to be.

Comment #12The biggest problem (that we saw against Rangers) is that nobody was getting into the box.
Let’s hope that changes today.

Comment #15“No he isn’t playing” or “no he is playing”?
Because it’s the latter, I’m afraid.

Comment #18@a.l 9 (16): I agree with you, but I just can’t help but feel like Smith is going to get in a dodgy tackle and shoot us all in the foot.
