Newcastle Close In On Top 20 Year-Old Dutch International

Well there’s certainly lots and lots of news this morning on Newcastle United, and in the Daily Mail a report that  the Tyneside club are very close to signing recently capped Feyenoord midfielder Leroy Fer.

Leroy Fer – top 20 year-old Netherlands International

The news suggests the Newcastle club is close to actually wrapping up the deal, and the boy  is nicknamed De Uitsmijter – The Bouncer because of his powerful physique.  Fer stands 6’2″ tall and plays in central midfield, and this would appear to be a great signing for the Newcastle club, if they can indeed pull it off.

Newcastle are said to have already made one bid which has been rejected, but are now ready to follow up with an improved offer for the budding star.

Newcastle are helped by the fact that the Feyenoord club are in big debt (what’s new?), and are under some considerable pressure from their bank,  to raise cash from player sales.

The £4M-rated Fer, is young at just 20 years old, and made his very first appearance for Holland’s senior International side as a substitute in last week’s 1-1 draw with the Ukraine.

Fer made his first team debut at Feyenoord when he was just 17 years old, back in 2007, and he has since scored 9 goals in 76 appearances for the Dutch giants.

He has played for all the Netherlands Youth sides,  and is now a full International with many years seemingly ahead of him, in the famous orange colors of the Dutch – the beaten finalists in this year’s World Cup.

Fer was a recent target of Everton, but the Liverpool club cooled their  interest once they were able to hold onto Spaniard Mikel Arteta.

Newcastle are said to be in the driving seat for a great young player whom Dutch Under 21 coach Cor Pot has already compared to the great French midfielder Patrick Vieira.

Comments welcome.

he would be an amazing since, only 20 years old he is solid and doesnt mess about, hes been rated the new patrick vieira i would put him in the mould of nigel de jongs style of play at moment as he’s a type of player that takes no prisoners he would sit just in front of the back 4 and marshall everything plus he can often chip in with the odd couple goals.. bring him in £4million would defo get him cos of feyanoords financial trouble

We are fairly well-off in Central Midfield, however, for 4M I would deffo take him. Besides, the only players we have for the DM possition are Smudger or Barton, neither of which is a natural there. 4M for a player who will be worth 10M at the end of the season seems like a no-brainer to me.

seems like an ideal player for DM position, that can cover the turf and counter any quick breaks from the opposition

If his nickname is “the Bouncer”, that would be the “Uitsmijter” (pronounced Outs-Might-Er) in Dutch.

Which is also the name of the famous Dutch breakfast of eggs, ham, bread and (sometimes) cheese, fact fans…

Either way, if he’s a good player we could get a good deal here – as GeordieToon89 says, Feyenoord are up to their eyes in debt.

I think this kid could be on his way in, with Smudge heading out (to Rangers maybe) straight away afterwards… Which would be a good trade up I think, as Smith hasn’t the pace for the position any more.

We are only being linked to players. When are we going to get them?? 😀

With Ben Arfa coming our way(hopefully).. I would like Djalo and Arevelo signing. That must sound off our transfer season.

must say i would rather have fer than arevalo atleast fer will have sell on value arevalo wont cos of his age, also i think djalo is over rated if he was that good at the age of 25 he should be at a better club than sporting, he’s quick and tricky bt thts about it

if you look back at my past posts i have been saying to sign him for about the last 6 months, an absolutely amazing talent, will be worth 20m in no time at all, everyone when i said to sign him, said they had never heard of him, amazing how everyone wants him now though

Leroy Fer is someone i would love at newcastle, seen him several times for feyenoord, and holland under 21?s, he is some talent, can play def central midfielder or a more attacking role

Would definitely be worth signing. We desperately need a defensive midfielder, and he seems to tick the boxes. If we brought Ben Arfa and Fer in, then I would be much more confident for this season!

nah i have been saying i wanted newcastle to get:-

tom cairney from hull city, i think he has the potential to be the next gerrard.

    leroy fer- as above

Andreas beck (hoffeinheim) right back awesome player, loves to get forward, german under 21 international and now breaking into full squad. I mentioned him about 18 months ago the same time as i mentioned ozil, both the lads stood out so much in a very good german under 21 team

geordielad880 .. mind you I always said we’d get Arfa .. .. but you are right about Fer looks like a prospect but have to admit don’t know much about him other than what I’ve read .. seems to have improved loads of the last 2 years .. played at RB and DM .. sign of a quality player if he can play well in different positions .. also he’s got a bit of pace .. should be able to cover for Arfa’s marauding attacking runs .. just hope we get him or Arevalo, who I know more about..

wijnaldum would cost a fortune, he is very similar in many ways to van der vaart, still has alot of developing to do in my opinion, but could be awesome, leroy fer is ready for the premiership now, and would be a good partner for barton in central midfield, with arfa on the right, and jonas on the left 🙂

sweendog, Im quite up on my dutch football, and i always watch the under 21 football matches when i can, he isnt the defensive player think he is, he has been playing alot more further forward of late, hes got a great touch, quick, good in the air, strong, and a great reader of the game

geordielad880 .. yep heard he can play behind the striker .. not really what we need though .. we need someone who is fast and get the foot in and play it simple .. heard he is good at this too .. one thing to do it in the dutch league .. premiership is a bit tougher though …

sweendog he isnt what we need??? you wouldnt say that if you need him, he can play right back, defensive midfield holding role, attacking midfield, he has everything, and he is a brilliant tackler, he could be worth a fortune in 3-4 years time, he is no risk at all in my opinion

if we got someone like fer with your description geordielad i dont think we would need an out and out defensive midfielder because if he’s like a rodwell then he’s a battler in midfield doesnt lose much and likes getting stuck in bt at the same time also likes to get forward and support attack im sure him and barton would like up great in the centre with yes arfa and jonas on either side, hopefully something happens on this deal though and its not just talk

geordielad880 .. what I was saying was arfa is to play behind the striker, so we don’t need Fer for that position .. we need him as a DM ..he’s a bit of a risk, but for 4 mill probably worth it .. but he may cost more..

in a couple of years time if he carrys on the way he is developing and the premier league can only help his development i bet clubs such as real madrid, chelsea, man utd would be chasing him and i bet he would be commanding a fee of around 20-30million no doubt, rodwell was linked with a 15million move and he isnt fully developed yet neither, we should defo sign this lad

It seems the captain and vice captain could end up on the bench before too long. If we got For and Ben Arfa our midfield would have:

Jonas, Ben Arfa, Barton, For, Vuckic, Gosling (when fit), Guthrie and Routelidge

…all of whom (in terms of ability/skill/pace etc) should be in the pecking order above Smith, Nolan and, of course, Ryan Taylor. This is without digging too far into the younger players coming through the ranks…

    What to do….

geordielad880 .. exactly this is the problem .. but ashley might prove us wrong … he does want to make a few quid and this is player he could sell on in 1-2 years for double that .. if he reaches his potential .. so you never know .. thing is we do need a fast/strong DM.. whether is Fre/Arevalo..
