News today that Danny Guthire may not be ft for the game tomorrow afternoon, at home to Aston Villa.
Danny Guthrie – an injury doubt for tomorrow
It appears that Chris Hughton is sweating on the fitness of Danny Guthrie before tomorrow’s important game against Aston Villa at St. James’ Park.
Guthrie injured his knee last week in training and missed out on the game at Manchester United although he made the trip in the hopes he would make the game.
Hughton told the Evening Chronicle today:
“It’s going be touch and go for Danny, but he did train yesterday.” “We’re assessing him and Peter Lovenkrands.”
“We definitely have not ruled either of them out.” “Peter and Danny are players who played a big part last season.”
“It’s important that you have all of your best and important players available.”
Hughton confessed today that when he announces his team for tomorrow’s game, there could be some players not in the side who will be disappointed, but that’s what we want to see – real competition for places.
And Chris seems to be pleased there is indeed competition for starting places within his current squad, as he continued:
“It is a good battle going on in there.” “And we want as much competition going on as possible.” “What you also have in the central midfield area are players who can also play out wide.”
“It’s a long season and we’ll be looking to use all of them.” “There will be various places where we go and want to use a tighter or more compact midfield.” “We’ve got to use the players that we have.”
In central midfield we would expect both Alan Smith and Joey Barton to keep their places, since both had reasonable games against the Red Devils last Monday night.
However, we also hope we have Cheick Tiote at the club before we start that game at 1:30 pm tomorrow afternoon.
