With the excitement of Newcastle’s 6-0 walloping of Aston Villa at St. James’ Park today, Newcastle announced at half time that they had signed FC Twente player Cheick Tiote.
Cheick Tiote - now a Newcastle United player
The signing is dependent on Newcastle being able to get a work permit for the Ivory Coast International, which should hardly be a difficulty. Tiote has passed his medical and the player has now become the fourth signing of the summer for the Newcastle United club.
Managing Director Derek Llambias said in his program notes today:
“Nobody inside this football club is under any illusions about the challenges we face this season, and there is no doubt that this is a hugely important campaign for the club in lots of different ways.”
“But the most important aspect is that we get things right out on the pitch.” “We’ve been working hard this summer to bring in the type of players required to make sure we’re still a Premier League team this time next year.”
“And while we’ve been delighted with our signings so far in James Perch, Dan Gosling and Sol Campbell, we’re still working behind the scenes to give ourselves the best possible chance of competing in the top flight.”
“To get this club back into the Premier League at the first time of asking was a fantastic achievement and was a real team effort.” “Everybody played their part including the supporters and we need to do it all over again.”
Good words from Derek, and don’t they sound just that little bit better after a 6-0 win?
And after the game today manager Chris Hughton said this about the player:
“He is a defensive midfield player – we feel it’s such an important area in this division. Alan Smith is probably our only defensive midfielder in the (current) squad.
“Hopefully there will be one or two more signings before the window closes.”
