News today in the Evening Chronicle that Newcastle are keen to bring Roque Santa Cruz to St James’ Park on loan.
Roque Santa Cruz while at Blackburn Rovers
The Paraguay international has had a rather difficult time at Manchester City, since joining the Eastlands club in June 2009 from Blackburn Rovers, and the Asunción, Paraguay born 29 year-old has made just 22 appearances for City scoring four times.
Sources in Manchester today suggested that Santa Cruz is a target of the Newcastle United club, and we know that Chris Hughton has already talked to Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini about some of his many surplus players at the Eastlands club.
Santa Cruz is thought to be a real target for Newcastle, and an experienced proven striker is exactly what Chris has often said he wants at the club for the coming season.
The former Bayern Munich striker scored 29 Premier League goals in 70 games for Blackburn Rovers, where he was great for then manager Mark Hughes.
While at Bayern Munich, Santa Cruz scored 38 goals in 188 games for the German club.
But the player himself is not sure where his future lies as he said today:
“We’ll see. Like in previous seasons we have a lot of great players in the squad, even up front.” “It’s about working hard to get opportunities to impress.”
“Every time I step onto the pitch I want to score, because goals are the best argument there is.”
Manchester City paid Blackburn an unbelievable £18M for his services just last summer, and the club has continued to make a mockery of the transfer system, by grossly overpaying for the players they have brought into the club over the last two years, and have now spent over £1B on players.
Unfortunately Mark Hughes, now at Fulham is also said to be interested in bringing the 6’2″ striker to Craven Cottage, and Newcastle would face considerable competition from the London club.
We think Santa-Cruz would be a good addition to the side, but it’s been a long time since the Paraguay International showed any decent form – but there again he’s hardly played at Eastlands since he arrived there last summer.
Roque has played 70 times for Paraguay and has scored 21 International goals for his country.
