Newcastle Interested In Paraguyan Roque Santa Cruz

News today in the Evening Chronicle that Newcastle are keen to bring Roque Santa Cruz to St James’ Park on loan.

Roque Santa  Cruz while at Blackburn Rovers

The Paraguay international has had a rather difficult time at Manchester City, since joining the Eastlands club in June 2009 from Blackburn Rovers, and the Asunción, Paraguay born 29 year-old has made just 22 appearances for City scoring four times.

Sources in Manchester today suggested that Santa Cruz is a target of the Newcastle United club, and we know that Chris Hughton has already talked to Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini about some of his many surplus players at the Eastlands club.

Santa Cruz is thought to be a real target for Newcastle, and an experienced proven striker  is exactly what Chris has often said he wants at the club for the coming season.

The former Bayern Munich striker scored 29 Premier League goals in 70 games for Blackburn Rovers, where he was great for then manager Mark Hughes.

While at Bayern Munich, Santa Cruz scored 38 goals in 188 games for the German club.

But the player himself is not sure where his future lies as he said today:

“We’ll see. Like in previous seasons we have a lot of great players in the squad, even up front.” “It’s about working hard to get opportunities to impress.”

“Every time I step onto the pitch I want to score, because goals are the best argument there is.”

Manchester City paid Blackburn an unbelievable £18M for his services just last summer, and the club has continued to make a mockery of the transfer system, by grossly overpaying for the players they have brought into the club over the last two years, and have now spent over £1B on players.

Unfortunately Mark Hughes, now at Fulham is also said to be interested in bringing the 6’2″ striker to Craven Cottage, and Newcastle would face considerable competition from the London club.

We think Santa-Cruz would be a good addition to the side, but it’s been a long time since the Paraguay International showed any decent form – but there again he’s hardly played at Eastlands since he arrived there last summer.

Roque has played 70 times for Paraguay and has scored 21 International goals for his country.

Questions over his fitness record though, so just makes you worry about appearances vs. wages, echos of Michael Owen!

I don’t think it would be good, need a smaller striker to play off Carroll… Or just Nolan! 🙂

If he can stay fit, I’d snap him up, but he’s crocked a lot. I also get the feeling he wouldn’t be too chuffed at playing second fiddle to young Andy.

    Doubt it.
    This bloke flatters to deceive.
Two big lads up front can do it though.
Shearer and Sutton, although it was mainly down to Shearer, and they hated each other appaerently.

I would take him 2 years ago, but I agree with some of the posts above which question his fitness and motivation. I also doubt he would be able to play with AC, and going on current form, you would have to select AC before RSC?

Not what we need, i think a quick player for big Andy’s flick ons is what we need, not another big lump..
There is a good player called Hatem ben arfa, i think we should try to get him 🙂

Injury prone, excessive wages, old. But the main reason I don’t want him is because we don’t need him – the only striker worth signing is a quick one like Lovenkrands. Would rather see Ranger up front than Santa Cruz. Why sign someone if he doesn’t improve us?

@NUFC_Richyg01 He’s a young guy who plays for Marseille. I hear they need to trim their wage bill – perhaps a loan bid with a view to a permanent transfer?

We wont be signing Cruz, already said on another thread that CH loves this 4-5-1 system – expect to see it a lot more.

    No room for RSC.

    HBA yes, RSC no.

Santa Cruz wouldnt add anything to the squad, he plays in the same way Ameobi and Carroll do arguably with a bit more talent but I wouldnt go out of the way to bring him in over what we already have. I think with Carroll Nolan and Lovenkrands theres a good balance.

we need a quick striker who can score 15-20 goals to keep us in the league. Not many fast forwards out there really, but we will see when the 25 man squads are named to see who is available etc.

Martins Moved to Russian Champions Rubin Kazan in July, for €8 million, on a 3yr Contract.

He only played 16 times for Wolfsburg scoring 6 goals since he left us.

Doubt this deal only because his wages are massive from what i heard and only club that would get him are like Blackburn,Fulham,West Ham etc…. but 2 big strikers is great if we could get him on loan, we seems to enjoy Andy’s height and look so dangerous from set plays so adding Roque would be great.

I would take Martins Back, I dont think he was to blame for us going down, as a striker, you can only score with service from Midfield.

Then why did he keep missing the chances that were on a plate for him? He was putting loads over the bar and straight at the keeper in the last 10 games. £85,000 a week and hits it over the bar from 6 yds-do me a favour!

I don’t like this rumor at all. I’m pretty far on the leave it side of take it or leave it with him. We have Carroll and Ameobi to play the role that he would fill here, maybe he’s better that Shola, but I’d rather the wages be spent on someone that actually adds something other than position competition to the team. If we’re adding a striker, I’d rather see someone in the speedy genre.
