Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is hoping to strengthen the Newcastle squad by signing striker Roque Santa Cruz and center-back Dedryk Boyata from Manchester City, before the transfer window closes at 5:00 pm next Tuesday afternoon.
Dedryk Boyata – 19 year-old Belgium U21 International
Eastlands manager Roberto Mancini has to trim his playing staff significantly before next Tuesday, when he must also name a 25 man first team squad.
With lots of new and expensive players being brought in, it seems that City are decimating their once excellent youth policy, as their fine youngsters are hardly getting any chances at the Manchester club.
And it seems Newcastle will have a better chance with 19 year-old Boyata, who looked an excellent player early last season when he appeared 3 times for the City side.
He was born in Brussels and is of Congolese descent, and the 6’2″ player already has appeared for the Belgian U21 side, and looked a great player in the making early last season, and would be an excellent acquisition for the season for Newcastle.
We’re not so sure about 29-year-old Santa Cruz, who has been a fringe player at Manchester City under Mancini, and the news yesterday was that he was trying to set up a loan deal to Italian club Lazio.
The Paraguayan World Cup striker was transferred to City for an amazing £17.5M from Blackburn last summer, so at least Blackburn made out well with the deal, but a calf injury last season helped restrict his playing time significantly at Eastlands.
It is true that his vast experience could be a help to Newcastle’s relatively inexperienced strikers like Andy Carroll, Nile Ranger and Leon Best.
Boyata, the Belgian youngster is unlikely to get much playing time if he stays at Eastlands this season, after City have brought in the likes of Jerome Boateng in defense, and of course if Steven Taylor does leave Tyneside in this transfer window, Dedryk would be an ideal replacement.
Indeed if Newcastle can get the 19 year-old on loan and he does well, as we would expect, Boyata would be a fine future permanent acquisition for the Tyneside club.
So of the two players mentioned we like Dedryk a lot, but are not too sure of Santa Cruz.
