Shola Ameobi Wants Starting Striker Place At Newcastle

Shola Ameobi got his  first start of the season last night, and duly scored his first goal during last night’s 3-2 Carling Cup victory at League Two (England’s 4th division) Accrington Stanley.

Shola Ameobi – good goal last night as he captained the young side

Ameobi told BBC Newcastle today:

“I’ve made my views known to the manager, he knows I want to play,” “I just hope I can get my chance and when it comes I can take it.””Last season was a bit disappointing with the injuries I had and this season I was raring to go,”

“Obviously Andy is flying high, and the manager prefers Kevin Nolan up there, which is the manager’s decision, but I’ve made my point to him.” “I feel the need to be playing football, but the lads are doing well and tonight gave me a chance to get 90 minutes.”

The Nigerian born striker scored 11 goals last season, but had his season interrupted  more than once by injury, but Shola looked really sharp at the start of last season when he got 5 goals in August.

However, with 21 year-old Andy Carroll coming through, and Kevin Nolan being  preferred as a second striker, both Shola and Denmark forward Peter Lovenkrands, who also scored last night, have been on the subs bench.

But there’s also lots ogf games to go this season, and Shola will get his chance to score those goals, as one of the few proven PL strikers at the club.

But there’s  also nothing wrong with competition for places, and we are pleased we have that competition amongst our current strikers at the club.

Comments welcome.

Is he going to cause some problems in the dressing room? I surely hope not cause otherwise he can pack his lugage and join S. Taylor.

i didn’t like the way he celebrated last night when he scored…what was that all about..i seriously have thought many times before season after season why we keep hold of this guy…only Keegan tried to sell him and he failed his medical at Coventry if i remember correctly..he is not gud enough for this division…he is a nice guy but its too much that he is asking for a starting role..i simply dont think he is simply gud enough….he can be a squad player ..regular starter i dont think so

Shola’s a good lad, but I think realistically he’ll need to head for the CCC if he’s looking for regular starts. He just isn’t good enough for the premier league. He had the potential to be good enough, he just never capitalised on it. Shame really.

Yeah i agree, it would be best for player and club if shola went to the championship. He’d be at the perfect level, just like james beattie was

Yeh i really think contract talks will be complicated as newcastle will probably be thinking 25-35k but ben arfa could want much more
werder could still be in as CH himself has also denied HBA rumours at times – lets just hope that we can hold of the scousers to get our man

    Richygo1 –

    spot on.

There were a couple things that i didnt agree with from CH last night.

    1) why was ranger playing RM

    2) why wasnt vuckic put in an advanced role behind a striker

    3) why did he field 11 changes? a team of half n half would have seen us put at least another 6 goals away. When Nolan came on it took him 30 seconds to put lualua through lol

But all in all a win is a win I just feel at times CH is a little too careful

yeh well lets just hope we can get things wrapped up in the next day or so sweendog and i agree that shola is a good squad player – he looked impressive against villa and would have scored if it wasnt for a handball which was not highlighted as nolan netted the rebound

it looks like a deal could be done for us as everything is agreed and sweendog has convinced me that the toon have a great chance of pulling this one off
its all about whether the scousers are serious or not and whether werder are too.

    ameobi alias bambi alias strolla…..

you been a good servant to this club….and done well considering your abiliti and skill. but I think its in best interest of both parties that you join a club like stoke, birmingham or wolves where you can be their top striker…sometimes things go a bit stale…pastures new wouldnt be too bad for you……..like Zamora was crab in all the clubs he represented before he joined fulham and suddenly hes an england international…
    all change ameobi all change

“Last season was a bit disappointing with the injuries I had and this season I was raring to go”

Sorry is this a current quote or the one he made in 2009 or 2008 or 2007 or 2006 or 2005.

I do feel sorry for the guy, he has (had) some potential. Having been the understudy during the Shearer years pushing Chopra down the pecking order, 5 injury plagued seasons on the trott mean that he hasn’t acheived that potential. He’s only still with the club because previous transfer deals have fallen through on the medical.

He now finds himself with the next young turk in flying form and more importantly in good physical condition and realising his potential.

    Ameobi is 28 now.

He aint a young lad like Ranger or Carroll that has time to improve or change his game to suit the EPL.

Yes he has been a good servant and squad player, but I think that he should call time on his EPL career and move down to the CCC (NPC N-Power Championship) where it is obvious his skill is more suited
