Shola Ameobi got his first start of the season last night, and duly scored his first goal during last night’s 3-2 Carling Cup victory at League Two (England’s 4th division) Accrington Stanley.
Shola Ameobi – good goal last night as he captained the young side
Ameobi told BBC Newcastle today:
“I’ve made my views known to the manager, he knows I want to play,” “I just hope I can get my chance and when it comes I can take it.””Last season was a bit disappointing with the injuries I had and this season I was raring to go,”
“Obviously Andy is flying high, and the manager prefers Kevin Nolan up there, which is the manager’s decision, but I’ve made my point to him.” “I feel the need to be playing football, but the lads are doing well and tonight gave me a chance to get 90 minutes.”
The Nigerian born striker scored 11 goals last season, but had his season interrupted more than once by injury, but Shola looked really sharp at the start of last season when he got 5 goals in August.
However, with 21 year-old Andy Carroll coming through, and Kevin Nolan being preferred as a second striker, both Shola and Denmark forward Peter Lovenkrands, who also scored last night, have been on the subs bench.
But there’s also lots ogf games to go this season, and Shola will get his chance to score those goals, as one of the few proven PL strikers at the club.
But there’s also nothing wrong with competition for places, and we are pleased we have that competition amongst our current strikers at the club.
