Are Newcastle After John Utaka As Potential Signing?

We’re not too sure what to make of the news that Newcastle United have joined the battle to sign Portsmouth 28 year-old striker John Utaka.

John Utaka – Portsmouth striker availabel for £1M

The Daily Mail says that Newcastle are ready to rival Sunderland and Wigan for the Portsmouth striker and he is available for £1M.

So that would be decent deal, and it seems that Newcastle want to bring in one experienced striker before next Tuesday, but if that’s the case, we’d much rather see Robbie Keane coming through the door.

It could be that John is a back-up in case the loan deal – presumably being worked out with Tottenham for Robbie to come to Newcastle next season –  falls through,  which is very possible.

John is certainly an experienced player,  having played for six clubs before arriving at Portsmouth back in 2007, and he has played over 80 times for Portsmouth and 43 times for Nigeria.

That must be about the 6th striker we’ve been linked with in the last 24 hours & god knows how many since the window opened. Suppose by the law of averages the media will get one right eventually.

Utaka has played in the EPL,

Miller being SPL is CCC level so Utaka is a better player.

1million? yes please – hes a decent squad filler and has potential

kenny miller isnt as versatile as utaka who provide wing cover too and miller is also more expensive and cudnt cut it at PL level

Miller’s goal scoring record in the English leagues is appalling. I wouldn’t want him, or Utaka here, and as Hughton has denied the Utaka link, thats that.

miller’s goal scoring record in epl is apalling? as oppose to schevchenko’s in epl? da pasty leprachaun was in a shite team but they still scored against us. does dat make shevchenko a bad striker?

btween Miller & Utaka..dats all mim sayin. I rather hav Forlan tbh 🙂

He is supposedly on £70k at Portsmouth thanks to Old Harry. Cant see him coming here for £15-20k.

I had the good fortune to get paid to watch allthe pompey home games for the last two years. However I am not here to discus my good/bad fortune just to warn against a move for Utaka. Even pompey shouted sit down whenever he warmed up from the bench. He a competent epl player but his finishing was awful. we need a striker that can score goals but in two seasons that is something Utaka repeatedly failed to do. Plus it seems the story originated in the mail so thankfully probably not true.
