Newcastle After Manchester City Youngster

Newcastle United are said to be after Manchester City young left-back, 19 year-old Greg Cunningham.

Greg Cunningham – Newcastle like this youngster

The Sunday Express says Newcastle want to take Manchester City left-back Cunningham on loan for the season, and the youngster has already represented his country, Ireland, at full International level, and looks just the kind of player that fits Newcastle’s profile.

The Carnmore County Galway born player would be wanted to back up Jose Enrique at left-back,  but we cannot see the youngster playing too many games at the Tyneside club this season, although he may also be a longer term target for the Magpies.

The youngster joined City in 2007 from Galway club Mervue United,  and was called up to the full Ireland squad by manager Giovanni Trapattoni last February,  for a friendly against Brazil, and he made his debut last May,  in Ireland’s 3-0 win against Algeria.

He also made his debut for City this year and has so far played a couple of times for the first team.

But the Eastlands club, who have to unload a number of their players by next Tuesday afternoon,  are thought to be wary of letting the Irishman leave until their 24 year-old Serbian International Aleksandar Kolarov recovers from injury.

And talking of young left backs, we thought our own 19 year old Northern Ireland International, Shane Ferguson, was impressive on Wednesday evening against Accrington Stanley.

Premier League clubs have to name their 25 man rosters by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, 24 hours after the transfer window slams shut.

Comments welcome.

I would give our own Shane Ferguson the chance first. He made a good showing on Wednesday.

Completely agree. Although PVA of Chelski proved to be a very good loan signing, and there’s nothing to say this lad wont be either, young Ferguson looked decent – we have to start playing them more and having more faith in our own youth.

Why bring him in? I was impressed with young Shane Ferguson at the Accie match last Wed.

I’m sure Jonas could fill in at LB of Enry is out (hell, Jonas played RB in the world cup). We now have HBA and Xisco who can operate on the left flank so no shortage of potential left side cover. Ferguson looked OK on Wednesday, but he’s well off Prem pace.

Ditto re: Ferguson. He needs building up a bit but did a very tidy job. Would Cunningham bring anything extra? And what message would it send to our own lad?
More important is will the sucring of Ben Arfa allow us to send LuaLua out on loan to Brighton/ This is a different kettle of fish where it could be in our longer-term interest to be deprived of the talented youngster if he is going to get regular games under Poyet and come back a better player for us.

I reported this on here a week or so ago, we’ve been watching Greg for quite a while, he’s very highly regarded at Man City and he recently signed a new contract with them. I’ve seen him play several times and he is an excellent player, probably a better defender than Shane Ferguson who is more accustomed to playing left wing. This would be a great loan signing for us!

Whilst strengthening our first 11, I am pleased to see that we are still interested in building one of the best young second string teams in the premiership, a la Gosling, and perhaps this young chap. These guys are the future.

Anyhoo back to the present…does this look like a good team or what….

    …………………..Harper

    Perch……Campbell……Will/Coll…..Enrique

    …………Barton……………………Arfa……………..

    R’ledge……………..Keane………………….Jonas

    ………………………….Carroll

I know Keane ain’t signed yet, and we could drop in tiote/smith to be more defensive, but joey isn’t bad defensively – what a possible team for the remainder of the season going forward at home!

    Spuggy,
That team is OK at home when we can dominate but would get crucified at Chelsea. They would run straight through such a lightweight midfield.
Any chance we might buy somebody or are we reduced to loans forever?

i think tiote could be a great suprise signing, we need pace and strengh in the dmc role, and from what people have said he fits the bill. him barton and possibly keane(if signs) just off of carroll and jonas and ben arfa on wings…could be sweet!

It’s probably already been done on another thread, but I was really disappointed by Hughton’s irresponsible and tastless comments on the Beeb last night when he said he
welcomed more players like Carl Henry.

I know what goes around, comes around and probably none more so than in Joey Barton’s case, but Mc Carthy’s tactics were an absolute disgrace to football .

Shearer’s giggling on MOM didn’t help matters either. It was nothing short of open assault and yes Joey’s not an angel, but those tactics are going to get someone crippled.

Yes we all like a good tackle, but Henry could and should have been sent off twice yesterday and that 12 year old ref was totally pathetic.

According to that cwarr07 lad we’re getting rid of Xisco… perhaps making room for Keane?

Dunno about you lads but that kind of bothers me given his recent performances. I’d like to see the lad fight for a first team position.

You are not wrang there, toonster – if we don’t get beat, it’ll be a helluva surprise.

Mevvies if Drogba, Anelka, Malouda, Cole, and Essien join them 2 lads on the treatment table…

Still, I remember Rob Lee nearly done them.

aswell as he understands why he is not in the french squad because at the time he did not have a club

I have never been a big fan of perch, he has been pretty solid in the last two matches, but does anyone else think he is very rash in the challenge, and needs to learn to stay on his feet more, he does have good pace, something which ryan taylor doesnt have. I really think if we can get another striker on board, we will have a decent season, has anyone else heard ameobi might be going out on loan? we are still far away from our best squad aswell, with campbell, gosling and guthrie unavailable, I think things are starting to look up, and if we carry on with our current form, and maybe add a couple of players in jan, who knows where we could end up
