Some interesting news this morning from Chris Hughton, who has vowed to take part in next year’s Great North Run, if Newcastle can finish in the top ten this season.
Chris Hughton – If Newcastle finish in top half – I’m in Great North Run
Well, how’s that for some motivation for the Newcastle players, to have their manager run the in the famous half marathon race.
Or should we say walk and run.
The Great North Run takes place tomorrow, and it has the biggest participation of any half marathon in the world.
This is what Chris said today:
“I’ve got no plans to do the Great North Run, but if I was guaranteed a top-ten finish for Newcastle this season I’d do it happily. You can put that on record. I could walk it and I could jog some of it.”
“I’ve got a knee that allows me to do everything I need to do out on the training pitch, but I couldn’t do a run like that.” “If we get in the top ten, though, I shall do it next year.”
“It’s something I’d quite like to do and it’s one, of course, I’ve known about for some time, but a little problem with my knee restricts me from doing it.”
If Chris does have to run the half marathon, then he could have some problems, because it will not do his knee any good at all, and running when injured is not good.
I found that out many moons ago, when I ran the Philadelphia marathon – a full marathon of 26.2 miles – and injured my left knee after just 8 miles, but being the Geordie idiot I am – I refused to drop out and finished the race – limping all of those last 18 miles.
Now the knee is playing up big time, and it makes it difficult to run on, but I can still walk on it fairly easily.
Chris can run and walk during the race, as he says, but he should maybe also wear a brace on the knee – or something like that for protection – we don’t want him to cripple himself!
Of course we hope Chris has to run the race, because that would mean Newcastle will have done great this season, and not only that but Chris and Colin should both have decent long term contracts at Newcastle by then.
Wonder what the chances are that Newcastle have a game on the day of the Great North Run next year?
