Newcastle have confirmed that their 20 year-old defender Ben Tozer has joined Northampton Town on a month-long loan deal.
Ben Tozer – on loan for a month at Northampton
Plymouth-born Tozer joined Newcastle from Swindon Town in January of 2008, signing a four-and-a-half year deal, and he was one of five top youngsters the club signed in that month.
When he joined Newcastle he wasa top player in the making, but with a serious injury last season, he has lost his way a little at Newcastle, and a month long loan move should do the lad a world of good.
We would expect if all goes well the loan move can be extended.
Northampton manager Ian Sampson talked about Ben:
“He’s a player with an excellent pedigree and someone who will do us a good turn over the next few weeks.”
“He was really keen to come and already his attitude to get stuck in and do well for this club has impressed me. I tried to bring him in last season, but it didn’t quite work out.”
And Newcastle may also send more of their players out on loan, and the most likely to move is Leon Best, who seems to have been frozen out at Newcastle after he signed in January from Coventry.
But the lad needs games, and he could do a good job for a Championship side, with Leeds said to be keen to take the player for a loan through January, although it may even be a season-long loan for the player.
Andy Carroll, Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands, Nile Ranger and new boy-wonder Hatem Ben Arfa, all all ahead of him in the firing line on Tyneside right now.
Leon is one of the few of Chris Hughton’s signings, who have so far not been a success at the club, but he’s still young and only turned 24 last Sunday, and it’s games he needs this season.
19 year-old local boy, Ryan Donaldson, may also see himself get some playing time away from Newcastle this season.
