The entertainers are back in Toon with Newcastle beating Chelsea on merit 4-3, in an unbelievably exciting and thrilling game at Stamford Bridge tonight, and it was Newcastle’s first win there in 24 years.
It was two goals from Shola Ameobi and first half strikes from 19 year-old Ranger and Ryan Taylor that gave the Newcastle second team a historic win against Chelsea’s second team – so what’s that about Newcastle squad strength – it cannot be too bad these days.
Chris Hughton, in the opinion of a lot of Newcastle fans had started too weak a side tonight, when he made a full 10 changes from the side that had won at Everton for the first time in 9 years last Saturday.
And things didn’t start too well for Newcastle with former Newcastle loan player Patrick van Aanholt scoring after just 6 minutes, after a terrible mix-up between Tim Krul and Sol Campbell, when they collided with each other.
However, as we found out under Chris Hughton’s management the Newcastle players never give up, and it was in the 27th minute that Nile Ranger scored his 3rd ever Newcastle goal from a nice cross from 19 year-old Shane Ferguson on the left wing, to draw level.
That was the first goal Chelsea had conceded in over 10 hours of football at Stamford Bridge, and a very good opportunist goal from Ranger, and the lad seems back on track with his football.
Nile Ranger then went close a little bit later when a cross was deflected into his path, but he miskicked the ball completely, just 6 yards from goal, as Newcastle were starting to get on top of Chelsea.
But then Ryan Taylor did score, when he beat goalkeeper Turnbull with a beautiful right-footed curling free-kick into the top corner and around the wall, after Ranger had been brought down just outside the penalty area.
And Newcastle were easily getting the better of this Chelsea side as half time approached, and the Chelsea fans were becoming more and more frustrated, which was hardly surprising, as their team had been outplayed for the first time this season.
Carlo Ancelotti signaled his displeasure at the Chelsea performance when he sent on both Salomon Kalou and Alex at the start of the second half, but then would you believe Shola Ameobi scored a terrific goal when he beat the goalkeeper from 30 yards out as he side-footed the ball past Turnbull to shock the Chelsea side, as Newcastle were now 3-1 ahead on 49 minutes.
Both Kalou and Yossi Benayoun had to leave the action through injury, and since Carlo had already used all his 3 subs in the game, Chelsea were reduced to playing with just 10 men – which didn’t help the Chelsea cause.
The question was could Newcastle hold out with such a young side at Stamford Bridge.
Nicoloas Anelka did pull one back after 70 minutes and it was game on, as Chelsea only needed a single goal to send the game into extra time, and were attacking the Magpies at every opportunity.
But it looked like the magnificent Newcastle side would hang onto their lead, until it got to the 87th minute, with just 3 minutes to go, when substitute Mike Williamson brought down the French striker in the area – and Anelka himself made no mistake from the spot for his second goal, as he easily beat goalkeeper Tim Krul.
But the TV replays showed that Anelka had conned the referee, with Williamson not even touching him – but Chelsea got what they needed – their 3rd goal, but it was never a penalty.
3-3 with a couple of minutes to go and it looked like extra time – but never count this Newcastle side out of it, because in the 90th minute, local lad Shola Ameobi had the ball in the net again with a text book header – from a perfect Gutierrez left wing corner kick – taken with his right foot.
And the rumors that referees favor the big clubs got more evidence when the referee said it would be a full 6 minutes of added time – only because Chelsea were behind – obviously .
And Newcastle had beaten the reigning Premier League champions on their home turf, and so proceed to the next round of the Carling Cup.
A magnificent result for this Newcastle side and a game for the ages – probably one of the best Carling Cup ties ever.
In our match preview today we had said the following:
So tonight’s game looks like it will be a very tough game for the Newcastle side, but we hope the lads can play well, and if they can get through to the next round, that would be a shock – but also a tremendous achievement.
And yes, this was a tremendous achievement for this young Newcastle side, and confidence will be brimming in the squad now – and we’ll not even mention that Tyneside will be jumping.
If we can beat Chelsea at Chelsea – who do we now need to fear? Of course Chris Hughton’s response to that will be to rightly answer – everybody. 😀
Great credit goes to the Newcastle players tonight for a fantastic victory – and they made Newcastle fans all over the world very proud tonight.
And we still have to beat Stoke on Sunday – no excuses.
Comments very welcome.

Comment #82Does anybody else think that Krul is the mould of a certain Mr. Given (only he can deal with crosses better)? He’s going to be a star – I guarantee it.

Comment #87Already seen the goals but Ameobi looked impressive, more mature upfront, didnt make any of his silly misses or lack of concentration which is great to see.
Agree with comment above that Ranger and Shane F were easilly the best players on the park, it will do Shane a MASSIVE boost he may make the bench alot more, but for Ranger he played soo well but i think its too good because he is gunna get overlooked again as a striker for us, him and Carrol ARE NUFC FUTURE upfront both Tall and strong and english what more do you want 🙂 well done NUFC team

Comment #102WHAT A MATCH!!! FU**ING INSANE!!!! LOLOL I still can’t believe it! I was going mental at the pub when Ameobi (bambi) scored the header. It was a tense 6 minutes of injury time. I’ve got no nails left and even chewed a bit of the tip of each of my fingers. What a game…That has to go down as a Carling Cup classic for sure….easily the best match I have seen in a long time. MARK MY WORDS….THE ENTERTAINERS ARE BACK!!!!!! To think that it was our reserve team out there, kids fighting like men on the field. What encouraging stuff to see. I am over the moon right now and it feels like all this is too good to be true.
I think Nile Ranger, Shane Fergurson, Krul, Ameobi, RTaylor and Coloccini played out of their skin tonight. They deserve a good mention especially Fergurson. Vuckic didn’t impress me tonight , makes me wonder what all the fuss with this kid is about, and it’s not the first time i\ve thought that when i’ve seen him play. But I don’t want to talk negative because in all honesty everything is looking fabulous.
CHRIS HOUGTON SHORTLY YOU’LL EARN YOURSELF A STATUE OUTSIDE ST JAMES MATE!!! (and a plaque for Calderwood)

Comment #113Yeah Jonas seem like half the player he was when he first came TBH, I remember MOTD drooling over him on the first outing 2 seasons ago. He didn’t seem to want to take players on tonight, lacking confidence? Good corner for Shola goal though.
