Tozer Makes Debut In Historic Northampton Win At Liverpool

Newcastle’s win over Chelsea wasn’t the only upset last night in the Carling Cup, as Northampton Town beat Liverpool 4-2 on penalties,  after the game ended 2-2 after extra time.

Ben Tozer – what a debut for the 20 year-old

The 20 year-old defender played the full game for Northampton as the League Two side recorded one of the greatest wins in their history, and by all accounts thoroughly deserved their win.

It was 1-1 after 90 minutes with Milan Jovanovic putting Liverpool up after just 9 minutes, but in the second half Northampton equalized through a good goal from Billy Mckay.

But when Northampton went ahead 2-1 in extra time through Michael Jacobs,   it looked like it was all over for Liverpool, but the  Reds managed to pull level though David Ngog,  with just 4 minutes left.

And as the disappointed but always dignified Liverpool manager, Roy Hodgson, said after the game – when it goes to penalties you expect the home side to be able to pull through – but Liverpool missed a couple of their penalties and it was all over for Liverpool.

No Premier League title for Liverpool this season, and no Carling Cup either, but for Northampton it was just a terrific win – which the Cobblers thoroughly deserved with their brave display last night.

Congratulations to manager Ian Sampson and the Northampton club – and to Ben Tozer too.
