Andy Carroll will come back into the side today against Stoke City, even though Shola Ameobi had one of his best games ever for the Magpies on Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge, where the Chelsea defense just couldn’t seem to contain the big man.
Andy Carroll – the local lad has no fear
And today Newcastle manager Chris Hughton has been complimentary of Newcastle new young number 9 – Andy Carroll – and it seems Chris would like him to feature for the England U21 side, rather then the full England squad at the moment,
England have a European Championship U21 play-off with Romania in two weeks time, and Chris would be happy to see Carroll in the squad for that game.
This is what Hughton said about the 21 year-old today:
“We are incredibly confident that he’s a young player who’s got a bright future here,” “At this moment he is very much an Under-21 player and that’s where I see him.”
“He’s a young player who’s still developing his game.” “The fact that people have spoken about him gaining a call-up to Fabio Capello’s senior squad, is a reflection on how he’s started the season.”
“That’s got to be something that’s really pleasing for him. But at this moment I see him all as an Under-21 player.” “He won’t get carried away with the attention,” “It’s how he handles the highs and lows because it is a particular position where even the most wonderful goalscorers of the past have had barren spells.”
“Look at Wayne Rooney at the moment.” “What has helped Andy is the fact that he’s scored goals. Strikers are capable of going through barren spells and perhaps not playing so well.”
“He’s managed to get off the mark. I think if you’d said to him at the start of the season ‘Would you have settled for four goals by this stage?’ he would have.” “He doesn’t have fear. There are areas of his game that he still needs to develop, he’s nowhere near the finished article.” “But he’s a young player who’s prepared to listen and learn.”
“At this moment we are in quite a healthy position with the squad and competition is vital.” “We have Shola Ameobi’s performance midweek, Nile Ranger, another young lad making great progress, Peter Lovernkrands, excellent for us last year and Leon Best, who hasn’t had the opportunities.”
“So there is real competition and that will be important. I would expect Andy to react to that the same way I would expect anyone to.”
Chris will have to balance things this season – somehow – as we know Shola wants to play more, and of course Chris has another young budding star in 19 year-old Nile Ranger also coming though.
Chris elected to keep Nile at the club this season, so he’ll have to find ways of getting Nile some playing time, but with all the players at Newcastle seemingly all playing very well right now, that’s not going to be an easy task for the manager, whose star is starting to rise rapidly on Tyneside.
But it’s still a great problem to have for the manager – no doubt about that.
