Shane Ferguson Learning From Superb Jose Enrique

Newcastle’s 19 year-old left back Shane Ferguson has already played once for the Northern Ireland side.

Shane Ferguson – up and coming player at Newcastle

And the way he has played at left back for Newcastle this season, it would not be surprising if he is called into the Northern Ireland squad again.

Shane seems pleased with the progress he has made at Newcastle, and while he started as a left winger he has been moved to left back by manager Chris Hughton, with some success.

And it seems that manager Chris Hughton is so pleased with Ferguson’s progress that he is now Jose Enrique’s understudy, and if Jose was injured Shane would get the call.

There would  be no reason to bring in a loan player, as Newcastle did in January when they brought in Chelsea’s Patrick van Aanholt for a month while Jose was out injured.

Shane told the Sunday Sun yesterday:

“My hero as a kid was Ryan Giggs – I try to model myself on him. It was Ryan all the way. He was one of the great players – to this day he is still incredible and I love the way that he plays; his attitude and everything about his game.”

“If I had to describe myself I suppose I’d be a hard-working, attacking full-back. I can also play left wing but I’m just working hard, trying to get as many chances as I can.”

“I started out as a winger but I’ve moved to left-back and I’m starting to really like it. I’ve only been playing it for a couple of years but I’m starting to really get into it.”

“Plus I’m learning from the best in the business in Jose Enrique. He’s a superb defender and he helps me out with bits of advice and suggestions – plus even just watching him in training helps.”

“All of the senior, first-team lads give me advice. There is just a great team spirit here.”

Shane will only get better, and of course he can play on the left wing too, so we have to hope Shane gets a few games this season.

He’s almost a certainty to start at left back against Arsenal in the 4th round of the Carling Cup in a couple of weeks time, which could be another great game at St. James’ Park.

Shane is just one of many young players starting to come through at the Newcastle club right now.

I like young Shane a lot and I think he could be a seriously good player for us in the future. I’d feel comfortable is Jose got injured

For a left winger, his sliding tackle against Anelka at Stamford Bridge was amazing.

I live with a lad from the same town as him, used to kick about together in the park…Good player, lots of potential HOWEVER he needs to beef up, he looks younger than he is and the stronger wingers will torture him!
