Newcastle Reserves will travel to Bloomfield Road on Wednesday, and it would seem like both Danny Guthrie and Danny Simpson will get full games in that fixture.
Danny Guthrie – in action against Aston Villa Reserves last Tuesday
Guthrie played the full 90 minutes in the Reserves’ draw with Aston Villa last Tuesday afternoon at Benton, and Simpson played about 70 minutes in a game which ended all square at 0-0.
Hughton talked to the Evening Chronicle today about the two Danny boys:
“We will be assessing both of them over the course of the week with a view to the Wigan game,”“For Danny Simpson I would have to say the game has come a little bit too quickly for him.”
“Although he has worked very, very hard in rehab and he is at a good level of fitness, he has been out for a long time and we have to be aware of that.
“I would have thought we’re maybe looking at another week or so for him.” “But Danny Guthrie has been out for a shorter period of time and so it probably won’t take him quite as long to get back to a position where he can play.”
So it looks like Guthrie is the furthest one ahead in terms of fitness, and could make the bench for the important home game against Wigan on Saturday at St. James’ Park.
It’s important that Newcastle do well on Saturday, not only so we can get some points on the board, but also to stop Wigan getting points off Newcastle.
Wigan Athletic are relegation favorites this season, at evens, only behind Blackpool, who are still number one odds on (8/15) favorites, and who have already taken 3 points off the Magpies at St. James Park this season.
Newcastle are 6th favorites to be relegated at 7/2 – so if that holds true – we’ll survive. 😀
We have to start amassing points at home before too long, and especially against the weaker sides, if we are to avoid a relegation battle.
