Guthrie Likely To Be On Bench For Wigan game

Newcastle manager Hughton has yet to make a decision on whether Danny Guthrie is ready to make his return against Wigan on Saturday.

Danny Guthrie – uncertain whether he’ll make bench on Saturday

Danny is returning from his knee injury, and he was not included in the Reserve team squad that will meet Blackpool at Bloomfield Road this afternoon.

Danny injured his knee in pre-season and he is only now returning from the injury,  and has yet to play for the first team this season.

With the great Cheick Tiote added to Newcastle’s central midfield in the summer, it will be even harder for Danny to get a start at Newcastle this season.

But on the other hand, the 23 year-old did show some of his best form at Newcastle in the latter half of last season, and is at his best when he plays in the middle of the park.

Indeed the last time Danny played in the first team was the last game of the season at QPR in early May when the lads won 1-0.

That was also Danny Simpson’s last game for Newcastle, and the Salford-born player is retuning from his ankle injury, and was included  in the Reserve team squad for the game at  Bloomfield Road, so we don’t expect Simpson to be included in the squad on Saturday.

Hughton commented on the two players today:

“With both of them, we have to wait and they are decisions we have to make.” “They have only trained for two weeks so we’ll see.”

As usual Chris gives nothing away regarding his team choice before any game, but we have a sneaking suspicion Guthrie will be on the bench on Saturday, in a game we should win.

Comments welcome.

Like I said on the previous thread, I thought we would demolish Wigan when Souness was in charge. They didn’t read the script!

Wigan is a bogey team for NUFC. Never understood why we struggle so often against the Latics. I am hoping for at least a 2-0 scoreline as it would do our goal diff some good.

Agreed Moreno – I no longer believe there are any games for the Toon this year that “we should win”. There are games that we must win and games that we could win.

Bogey team? Not so sure about that. The clubs I hate being in the same division as are still Coventry and Southampton. I don’t miss them one bit!

Aye Le Tissier scored some belters against us.

I remember a certain Ryan Taylor smashing one in for Wigan. Was at St. James’ when titup bramble (rapist of the year 2010) scored against us. We were really poor that day, spent 70 quid taking the missus to that one and she wasn’t happy.

Take out Nolan, put Guthrie in his place but move him to CM and bring Ameobi upfront to help Carroll

    Guttirez–Guthrie–Barton–routeledge (mclovin)

Petey – You’ve not included Tiote in the squad?? Probably our best player the last 3 games and he’s played 3 … I would structure the squad around him and Carroll….

    Simple as that 🙂

Nolan is never gonna be dropped so squad has to be worked aroung Tiote, Nolan and Carroll.

Nolan is never gonna be dropped.
Risky to start Guth just after coming back from injury.

You are right, he wont be dropped, but a man can hope and its MY list :-P.
I dont feel he has been performing.

And again you are right (this is getting old, who are you, Jose Mourinho?) Its risky to play a player who is just back from injury, so on that basis, start with Tiote and bring guthrie on as a sub later.

    On the bench Eh ?
And having just recovered from an injury and not exactly match fit, where else should he be ?
Look the guy`s lucky to be a backup central midfielder and get a few games and perhaps come on for fifteen or twenty minutes as a sub.
But he`s no starter, I mean we have Tiote, Joey and Nolan, with both Ben Arfa and Gosling and perhaps one of our youngsters added to the possible central midfield role.
If I were in his shoes i might be looking at another club in my future.

Nolan won’t be dropped but he should be! Sad to say but I just don’t think he can cut it with the pace of the game n all. Line up for wigan should be:

Mix of tried and tested and PL exp and potential goals from anywhere in the midfield to forward!

    Up the toon!
