Nolan Out – Carroll, Lovenkrands And Guthrie All Start

As we had surmised earlier today Kevin Nolan has been left out of the side to play Wigan this afternoon.

Chris makes three changes to the side that started against Manchester City two weeks ago, and it looks like he has opted to play in an attacking 4-4-2 formation this afternoon,  and that in itself will please lots of  Newcastle fans, who like to see the lads attack at home.

Kevin is not even on the bench, so he may have picked up an injury.

It also means that Andy Carroll and Peter Lovenkrands will start up front, and Shola Ameobi finds himself on the bench, after previously displacing Carroll in the last game.

And Hughton springs another surprise as Danny Guthrie will make his first appearance of the season, after finally recovering from the knee injury, and presumably he will start on the right wing.

This is a brave team selection by Chris, as he looks to attack Wigan from the first whistle this afternoon.  Good.

Sol Campbell is not included in the squad at all, so whether he has an injury we’re not sure, but Williamson and Coloccini continue in the center of the Newcastle defense.

Former Newcastle winger Charles N’Zogbia and former center-back Steven Caldwell are both included in the Wigan starting line-up, and Tom Cleverely, a former Newcastle loan target in the summer, now on loan from the Red Devils for the full season at Wigan, comes back from injury with a place on the bench.

And youngsters Kadar and Ranger are also on the bench for Newcastle, and we suspect Coloccini will be captain today, and he’ll just love that.

Howay The Lads – we need all 3 points today!!

Teams:

Newcastle United: Krul; Perch, Williamson, Coloccini, Enrique; Barton, Guthrie, Tiote, Gutierrez; Carroll, Lovenkrands.
Subs: Soderberg Routledge, R. Taylor, Smith, Ameobi, Kadar, Ranger,

Wigan: Al Habsi, Alcaraz, McCarthy, Thomas, Di Santo, N’Zogbia, S. Caldwell, Gomez, Boyce, Stam, Figueroa.
Subs: Kirkland, Watson, Boselli, Moses, Cleverley, Rodallega, Diame.

I hope you’re right but he might be playing 4-5-1 with lovenkrands on the wing and Guthrie playing through the middle.

“attacj Wigna” I expect that you mean “attack Wigan, Ed 🙂

But no matter. Agrees that it appears to be an offensive setup and hope that we can have scored some goals and get some points on the line…

    Howay the lads

Nolan plays a few games where he just disappears, then 6 blinders.

Hopefully CH can spot his form dips and give him a few games in the reserves, to bring him back to form.

If lads on form I think we could win this 5-0. Loven, Guthrie, x2 Carroll and Jonas.

Bad decisions and not so good form? I could see us losing 2-0.

Ya we have all attacking options! And from watching Wigan couple of times earlier this season they have the worst defense ever! Wich Bramble was still there!

No Campbell eh? Interesting… must have picked up a knock because after his performance against Man City I’d have started him or at least brought him on from the bench.

Also, if it’s 4-4-2 – we can score a lot of goals. Jonas with balls to feet for Loven on the left, and Guthrie putting the ball onto Andy’s head from the right. If it’s 4-5-1, then it’s going to be interesting… because I can’t see us knocking many in.

5-0 might be just too little! I’m more than sure we will get our chances but we have to finish them

5-0 isn’t too little at all, might be way too much.

Predictions for the Stoke and Blackpool games at home, everyone said we should have thrashed them. Hopefully 4-4-2 will work for us today.

Which is exactly why I’m hoping for 4-4-2. Playing a lone striker role is a difficult job – especially for a young lad like Carroll. It’s a role you need to be comfortable in or very, very experienced imo.

Now throw Loven into the mix and you’ve got pace who can run off Andy’s flicks and follow up the saves/misses from Andy.

Aye, seeing Perch put in a good tackle is almost like watching Shola score with his head.

I’ve still got his first headed goal of the season (last, of course) saved on my computer in my “miracles” folder.
