Brilliant Cheick Tiote Gives Hughton More Options

If we had a vote on who was Newcastle’s best player so far this season,  we would expect 24-year-old Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote to be high up in the voting.

Cheick Tiote in action on Sunday in 5-1 mauling of Sunderland

Cheick has  been in tremendous form for Newcastle all season, and indeed he is so dominant in the center of midfield,  it has even allowed manager Chris Hughton to play 4-4-2 in the last two games, and still take full control of central midfield, and of course we won both games at West Ham and at home to Sunderland.

And the fact the lad only cost £3.5M from FC Twente in the summer, makes him another bargain basement buy for the Tyneside club, and he promises to be a real future star for Newcastle.

Not surprisingly Tiote has been compared favourably with Chelsea’s  Essien, who is also a combative midfielder, and  the 16 times capped Ivory Coast International was answering questions put to him recently by Newcastle fans,  and this is what he said  when he was told he was being compared to the  great Ghana star:

“Obviously, I’m only young, but to be compared to Michael Essien is quite a compliment.”   “I’m very proud to be spoken of like that.”

“I’ve always watched Michael Essien as a role model in midfield and one day I hope to be as good as him – or even better!”

With Tiote performing so well in the center of the park for Newcastle we are hoping that Chris will be able to play an attacking formation more often this season, because when Newcastle play 4-4-2,  they don’t seem to have many problems scoring goals and have 19 goals in their first 10 league games this season.

Only the top three sides, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United have scored more goals in the Premier League this season.

This lad has my vote for player of the season so far. Him and his twin in our midfield (He seems to do the work of 2 players imo?).

may sound daft, but i don’t think it’ll be easy for ben arfa to get back into the team when he’s fit…..

with the form of barton on the right and jonas’ telepathy play with enrique i think he’ll find it tough to get back in.
also i like having tiote and nolan in CM….tiote’s style of play allows nolan to get forward, whilst tiote covers the midfield and breaks up attacks as opposition come forward.

i never used to be a fan of 2 big strikers before, but if big andy and strolla carry on like the other day then i can’t wait to see the rewards……

    up the toon :)!

Strong; good tackler; always trying to play easy football; ideal to have him as CDM. And indeed the work he does, makes it a lot easier for others to go more in attack (Nolan, Barton, …).

So far he is the man of the season, ,cause he plays fantastic and he makes it look like he is playing his fifth or sixth season in the EPL. Second player of the season so far for me is Barton (hope he really keeps his head clean like he is doing now).

Wow, we score that much goal? And we are only behind the top 3 in goal scoring? That is awesome!

Occasionally get caught in possession in dangerous areas because of his trademark 180° turn, which opposing teams will figure ways to counter that sooner or later.

Other than that, the lad has done nothing wrong so far. Amazing player, who can tackle and spread the ball around, unlike Smith.

Your blog about Neverton wanting to buy Nolan – I’d be a lot more worried if it was this fella that there was a chance the club would reclaim some of Cashley’s investment.
    Hope I’m wrong.

Guy has been a legend. Great tackler, great passer, quick. I agree with arcarius on the 180 degree turns. He got caught in the Sunderland game but I think he took it on board and just passed out quicker after that.

I realise every one is on a high following last Sundays game, but lets not get carried away here.
Yeah Tiote was a good buy and yeah he`s playing well.
I have praised him as what we have needed since Parker left.
But to compare him to Essien is a bit premature, first he has to develop a passing game and he`s probably taken less than a half dozen shots at goal .
    Something that Essien excels in.
His passing so far has been less than inspirational, going to the short safe pass.
Hey that`s o`k for the time being, but the position requires more than a physical presence, a ball winner has to then be able to distribute the ball, hopefully he will improve.
The occasional shot on goal will keep defenders honest also.
His belief he can surpass Essien in this role is admirable, i hope he can, will he ?, doubt it !

Chuck, valid points, but it isn’t us on the blog comparing him to Essien, it is Tiote himself (I didn’t see any of the press comparing him?). What we are agreed in is that we all like to see a good grafter in a toon top, and in that sense the lad has excelled, so lets not knock it, just nod your head and let him get on with it. As long as the lad wears a toon top, its all good.
