We have asked the question before and we have to ask the question again, after an amazing 1-0 win this afternoon at the Emirates Stadium – just how good is Chris Hughton?
Gentleman and potential great Newcastle manager – Chris Hughton
Let’s review Chris Hughton’s management career so far – last season we played a total of 51 games, won 32 lost 6 and drew 13. So in his first season in charge Chris had a winning percentage of 62.7% – and Newcastle won promotion by winning the Championship by a full 11 points from second placed WBA. It was so easy it was simply remarkable, given the turmoil at the club when he took over.
But that of course was in England’s second division.
So let’s now fast forward to this season, when Newcastle have now played a total of 14 games, won 7 lost 5 and drawn 2 – so that’s a winning percentage of just 50%, and in total Chris has been in charge of 65 games at Newcastle, won 39 lost 11 and drawn 15 – not too bad a record at all – with an overall win percentage of 60%.
And with today’s win at Arsenal, when exactly was the last time Newcastle hammered Sunderland 5-1 and then beat Arsenal away 1-0 in successive games?
Newcastle are now in 5th position in the Premier League with 17 points, and just 3 points behind Man City, and 7 points above the relegation zone – 8 points because of our far superior goal difference of +6.
If Chris can keep the players fully focused, which he has proved he can, then there’s no reason that Newcastle cannot win the two home games to be played at home in the next 6 days, against Blackburn Rovers and Fulham – but of course no game in the PL is ever easy and that’s still a big “if”.
It’s no secret that Chris Hughton has probably the lowest wage of any manager in the Premier League at just around £250K/year (apologies for the “just”), and after the game today Jamie Redknapp, the football pundit and former Liverpool player, has made another controversial outburst – but isn’t that what he’s paid to do?
Talking on Sky Sports TV, the son of Harry Redknapp said after today’s game:
“What more can Chis Hughton do to get a new deal?” “He has been amazing at Newcastle, and he deserves the respect of being offered a new deal.”
“If that doesn’t happen after this result, an away win over Arsenal, following the 5-1 win over local rivals Sunderland, then I would walk away from the club … I seriously would!”
Hughton’s future presumably will be tied up at Newcastle fairly soon, and before the end of the year – within about 7 weeks at most – and Chris has said there isn’t too much he can do about the current situation:
“There is not anything I can do, all I can do is win as many football matches as I can.”
Chris is a gentleman and will wait patiently to be offered a new deal by the Newcastle club, and it should be a terrific deal for this quiet and modest manager, whose man management skills seem to be amazing – he deserves every single penny coming to him.
The press will try to make a big deal out of this – but most Newcastle fans, including us, will be very happy once Chris is tied down at the Newcastle club, before some other ambitious club comes in and makes him an offer he would be silly to refuse.
How good is Chris Hughton?
He could surprise the lot of us this season.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Hey hey … you’re getting a little ahead of yourself here mate. While CH has done wonders for us, and earned the respect of the fans … there is a significant way still to go, or should I say … he needs a decent PL season with us to really “prove” himself … a string of good results are not going to be enough

Comment #3having that column on the NotW website clearly rubbed off on you, Ed lol 😉
still, i think the media are overhyping hughton’s contract situation. He’s not going anywhere, and I’d imagine if the form keeps up he’ll get a new deal in January.

Comment #4As I said on a previous Post hes learning still….
against Man Utd tactics were dreadful, we sat back and got picked off, so he changed it for trip to arsenal and got at them.
So I’m sure he will only get better and better as a manager and we should tie him down pretty soon.
I was sceptical beginning of the season after his caretaker spells in the prem, said he deserved the chance but could see him gone by xmas…how wrong I was.
Fantastic in tranfer market (Titoe and Williamson who were fantastic combined were half the price of the useless french defender who got red carded for arsenal) and is developing his tactical knowledge and is a top gentlemen. What more could we want really.

Comment #11there is often a lot of sense written in this blog about how the media portray us, but what an absolute disgrace of a headline to write, complete joke.
Aside from that, anyone else picked up on the perhaps unsurprising correlation of wins and Perch not being on the pitch? been dropped for 3 league games, all of which we have won. I think we should donate Perch and Best to our needy neighbours Sunderland in January.

Comment #22Right, so Redknapp would walk away from a group of players that he gets on well with and who are doing well in front of a set of fans who love him, just because he’s suddenly not offered a contract after a few good results? Okay Harry.
And the title of this thread is an absolute disgrace. After everything that has gone on lately in the press, a so called Newcastle fan now states that our manager is going to walk away?

Comment #27I know why we’re winning matches now or is it just a coincidence that Hoots seems to be wearing that jackets & jumper at all the games we’re winning????
Bad headline Ed mate but good write up, it’s a shame Jamie Redknapp is following in his fathers footsteps with stupid comments like that too, it’s bad enough having Floppychops saying them, never mind someone who chose a sofa over a coaching role!!!!

Comment #30After Hughton’s win at Emirates this headline is an absolute insult. You should be ashaned of yourself , bloody disgrace for a Newcastle supporter let alone a born Geordie and an educated one at that!
You are not asking a question with that cheap headline, you are making a statement. Exactly what the gutter press do!!!

Comment #33Yes we should perhaps give Hughton a pay rise but this 4 /5 year contract talk is ridiculous. We’ve had that come back and bite us so many times and paid fortunes in compensation as soon as things turn bad.
Ashley has been burnt twice with Allardyce and KK and I think a 12 month rolling contract is very sensible, albeit on better money. It keeps the motivation levels up.
Arden toon – totally agree, Tiote is definitely one of our best ever signings.

Comment #36i dont get it. everyone knows he will be awarded one at the end of the year. chris hughton obviously isnt letting it effect him because were playing so well, so why is everyone else getting involved. if anything i agree with ashley for sticking to his word and waiting. showing we wont bow to media pressure.

Comment #38Although the headline is a poor one in so far that it misrepresents the article, many of you here seem to see the headline as news, or content, itself. This is a error on your parts but can perhaps be blamed on the poor newspapers or articles many of the public are used to reading where the headline is seen as a “soundbite” (so to speak) when it is not. If any of you that just slagged off Ed there were to read what he went on to write it would not only be obvious that the article is not criticle of Hoots or the team in anyway, but was merely an article based on what we heard Redkapp say yesturday, and it was his comments that were in fact foolish. The headline was wrong but I think we can all afford to give Ed a break on this one. Again, a headline is not content in anyway whatsoever.
