Newcastle Unchanged – To Play Attacking 4-4-2 Formation

As we half expected it’s another brave team selection today by manager Chris Hughton,  as he keeps both local strikers, Shola Ameobi and Andy Carroll, in the starting line-up which is unchanged from that which tore Sunderland apart 5-1 last Sunday afternoon.

Both returning center-backs  Steven Taylor and Sol Campbell, the former Arsenal great, are  among the substitutes, but still no place on the bench for Ryan Taylor, Danny Guthrie or James Perch, which says something about the current strength of the Newcastle squad,  once our injured players return.

Hughton usually plays a 4-5-1 formation away from home, and especially against a side as good as Arsenal, but we think Chris may think that  an Arsenal weakness could be their defense, and he will give Andy and Shola every chance to show he’s right about that this afternoon.

Arsenal have Wilshere, Fabregas and Song all starting today, with Van Persie on the bench, as he returns to fitness. Rosicky, Arshavin and Bendtner are also on the Gunners’ bench.

It promises to be an open attacking game this afternoon, and there’s also a chance Newcastle can get a surprise win, having lost 9 and drawn just one of their last 10 vists to Arsenal. The law of averages says that streak has to be broken some time.

We’re not too sure we could take so much success so early,  if  Newcastle do win today, – and we’re not exactly sure what we’d do –  after reaching for the blood pressure and heart pills first, of course. 😀

Howay The Lads!!

Arsenal : Fabianski, Sagna, Squillaci, Koscielny, Clichy, Song, Wilshere, Nasri, Walcott, Fabregas, Chamakh
Subs: Szczesny, Rosicky, Van Persie, Djourou, Arshavin, Eboue, Bendtner

Newcastle United: Krul; Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Enrique; Barton, Nolan, Tiote, Gutierrez; Ameobi, Carroll.
Subs: Soderberg, Campbell, S Taylor, Routledge, Smith, Lovenkrands, Ranger.

Good decision by CH. We needed to go with 4-4-2.

Ameobi and Carroll will be immense for Arsenal’s CBs. Tiote, Nolan and Joey Barton has to be combative! I believe we can sneak a result here.

If we get hammered, we go out trying to get something. Defending 90 mins against Arsenal is suicidal.

Ryan taylor not even on the bench?…. We could lose him in January if he dosent get games.. If we were goin to lose a RB I’d rather it be Perch than R Taylor…

looking forward to this one, its gonna be about key individual battles, especially in the midfield with nolan and barton vs fabregas and song.
i think theo might be dangerous with his pace so the bull will have to be at his best but he can cope!

This is a bold move by Hughton. I think he’s finally realised there’s no point being overly-defensive with teams that are likely to beat us.

Tiote is world class. We thought Ben Arfa was a bargain? Tiote, I’d be happy if we paid a lot more for him.

It’s been one way traffic so far, but we have to take the smaller mercies when they come, and in fairness nobody was marking Carroll, well done son

Now for a 11 man defensive effort in 2nd half…

Well, well, well. 1-0 at Arsenal?!?!

We all know Arsenal will come on very strong in the second half of course, so while I really enjoyed seeing Andy get the goal, I’ll only celebrate it if the game stay 1-0 to the Toon.

If it stays the same til about 60 mins, I’d take off Shola and put on Smudge.

Also, as mentioned, Barton and Jonas both need to keep the ball batter in second half.

Over all though, thought we did very, very well and really limited Arsenal.

    Terrific save from Krul btw.

    Chris Hughton = braveheart! 🙂

Even a draw would be fantastic against Arsenal. But Arsenal will not give up, they are a fantastic side with a lot of flair and creativity. They very often respond well when the opposition scores and have a lot of determination.

But to be honest: they have to play better in the second half if they wants any thing from this game.

    I think we stand a chance 🙂

    @ED Case
Would you put on smudge for Shola?
I would take off shola and put Barton in the middle and move Routledge out to the wing.
Smudge will give away too many free kicks imo.

Tim Krul with a match winning save, pure brilliance.(gotta be one of the seasons best)
