The News Of the World came out today with just a ridiculous story – yes even for them – that claimed that cocaine was found on a table in Nolan’s house after a night out with Andy Carroll.
Probably in order to reduce their legal liability, the newspaper stressed there was no evidence either player had taken the drug.
And Newcastle United have done the exact right thing, by issuing the following statement tonight:
The Club notes the story in News Of The World today and has passed the matter to its legal advisers.
Both Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll categorically deny having any knowledge that drugs had been brought onto the premises and are pleased that the paper does not even allege that they were aware of the presence of drugs.
Neither player would ever contemplate taking drugs or condone the use of such substances. The Club and the players named are sure that if the editor felt his story had any truth he would already have reported this to the police.
The Club and the players named will be happy to cooperate fully with any police investigation.
This is nothing but an attempt to throw a spanner in the works of the Newcastle United club, and we have to hope that Newcastle go ahead and sue this paper – they’ve gone too far this time.
We’re pleased Newcastle have come out immediately to nip this outlandish story in the bud – it’s just complete rubbish – but it’s the NOTW after all – and that’s the game this newspaper has been in for many decades.
