Mike Williamson Proving He’s Premier League Class

Mike Williamson could turn out to be one of Chris Hughton’s best ever signings, after he rescued the Stoke-on-Trent born 27 year-old player from Portsmouth last January.

Mike Williamson watches Bendtner do a Ballerina impression yesterday

After watching Williamson in action yesterday,  it’s hard to think he cost only £1M  from Portsmouth, and he’s already worth a lot more than that in the transfer market.

And it was interesting that the TV commentators yesterday said that Arsenal had got a good center-back in Laurent Koscielny, even though he cost them around £9M from Lorient, and yet Mike was playing in the same game, looked just as good, and cost Newcastle just £1M.   Does that make Mike a £9M center-back? 😀

Newcastle more than matched Arsenal yesterday, and Williamson had another sterling game alongside Fab Coloccini, and it could be that subs Sol Campbell and Steve Taylor will have to wait just a little longer on the bench in coming games.

Mike talked about the game yesterday:

“Coming to the Emirates, everybody knew what to expect.” “They were going to have the majority of possession, but they had to deal with it individually, and as a team.”

“We had to keep our discipline and limit their chances, which I think we did superbly.” “We know Andy and Shola up front are going to cause problems for anyone – they’re such a presence.”

“We had to just keep our discipline and keep going, and we knew Andy would take one of his chances, which he did.”  “It’s challenge after challenge, and I feel as though I’m doing well and doing myself justice.”

“I feel I’m growing as a person and as a player.”  “It’s a special thing the boys have got here. We’re a very close-knit group, and I think it showed.”

Mike will probably be pinching himself  with what is happening right now, because when he was at Portsmouth for 5 months,  he didn’t make one single first team appearance.

But he’s been a wonderful buy for Newcastle United,  and is proving he can step up to becoming a Premier League class player.

Mike is proving a shrewd signing by Hoots, similar to that of Tiote.

I have no doubt that Mike will only get better and I think it is brilliant that we have a more consistant back four, this way they get better understanding of eachother’s game.

MOTD 2 last night said similar things, notably about how they were functioning as a unit and playing a ‘perfect’ back line for the offside trap.

And that was Lee Dixon saying that, he knows all about quality back four’s.

Anyone know where the cheapest section is to sit for the match? I’m after 2 tickets, the official website is advertising them as starting from £20, but every time I click on a seat they seem to be £25 or £30….anyone know where the £20 tickets are located?

NUFC_Richyg01 .. agreed .. but if you look at it maybe the theme is hughton is coaching these players really well …
These players all had potential .. tiote, Williamson, simpson .. now under hughton they look premiership call ..
have to say though all the players were great yesterday .. all over the pitch…

Yes there is no denying we played well all over the park, but for so many seasons our defence has been our undoing, think Colin Murray said similar last night “not often you talk of a Newcastle defence and mention organised and discaplined”

NUFC_Richyg01 .. yep we’ve got a good defence .. including Tiote in that setup .. and you’re right I’ve never known a good defensive newcastle .. except when Jonathan Woodgate was on the pitch … did love the days of Albert though

Will Wednesday night be a “night off” for some of the lads that have started the last 3 games? Will CH want to keep them fresh for Fulham? Seems like Taylor and Sol could get some work, maybe Guthrie in midfield, a run for WR?

Sure hope CH and Tiote are working with the youngsters at Benton to develop another great defensive midfielder. Tiote is the one guy you just would dread seeing out of the line-up.

I agree with you there on Tiote, because if he is out, then Smith will come back in and he is not a patch on Tiote, gives away far too many free kicks and not as good with his positional play.

I feel that if Tiote is not in the starting XI then results will be very different.

BeeGuy .. I wouldn’t change anything unless we’re winning comfortably .. it does highlight we need good players to cover .. maybe when smith is sold in Jan we’ll get another DM to cover .. someone like Tiote ..

I have to admit, I got a bit of a squeeky bum when Tiote went to the sideline for treatment and Smudger started warming up. I really don’t dislike Smith as a player and, although he clearly isn’t as good as Tiote, I’m quite happy to see him get games. I’d just rather it wasn’t against a team like Arsenal. He’ll probably get a game against Blackburn. I’d imagine Ranger will probably get a shot too.

Its a little bit of a worry that both Tiote and Barton are only one yellow card away from a suspension. I hope this doesn’t come about in the same game as they on top of their game at the moment.

to put it this way. Tiote is the best performer in the premier league atm (according to SkySports official rating). Mike Williams is Newcastle’s nr.2 behind Tiote on score so far this season. (the score is based on a rating after each game, added up and divided on number of games: average ratio)

In addition we also have the top scorer and JB is making a name for himself being 4th among the top assisters.

    Davies:

yeah !! Tiote was holding the back of his thigh.. that could have meant 4-6 weeks.. but luckily he was fine.

Smith is a poor footballer… great physique and attitude, but thats it really. He hits a great tackle here and there but he don’t have any real impact on games. Tiote’s defensive work actually change games in our favour.

If Guthrie works away his manboobs and Gosling comes back hungry, I think it might be the end for Smith.

And in the end for fun;) :

Gotta say i was one of the Williamson doubters and rightly so…
but yesterday he had a screamer of a game.
The whole team was excellent and i haven`t seen us play so well as a team since `96 although our defence wasn`t as near as good as it is now.
Think we have a great chance this year and as Joey Barton said,we have to start believing in ourselves as the quality is there.
    Howay the lads!!!!!

i am never an Alan Smith fan

He is never a DM or a striker

few years ago, some commentator even stated he can play on the right winger (which for me is bullsh*t)

The problem with smith is that he got the ball very much in the first 10 mins, then remain anonymous in the next 80 mins
