Newcastle Reported Interest In Slovenian Striker

News today that Newcastle are planning to go after Slovenian striker Tim Matavz.

Tim Matavz – Newcastle Interested?

Certainly the The FC Groningen striker comes at the right age, at just 21 years old and he’s 6’2″ tall, and has 5 goals in 13 games so far for the Eredivisie club this season.

Tim made his full Slovenian debut some two years ago, and has so far played 6 times with 3 goals for the National side, and we have to think he will know our own 18 year-old Slovenian midfielder Haris Vuckic.

And the fact that Haris is at the club could even be a draw for the striker,  if indeed the Elf Voetbal report today, is accurate and Newcastle are indeed interested in the player.

Dutch newspaper Elf Voetbal is claiming that Newcastle scouts have been watching Matavz on several occasions this season, and could be prepared to move as early as this January.

We know that chief scout Graham Carr is busy looking at new targets, even though Chris Hughton has said no new players will be coming in,  during the January transfer window.

Graham Carr was the one responsible for bringing in Cheick Tiote in the summer, and the Ivorian has turned out to be a terrific signing for Newcastle, and his arrival in the first team coincided with Newcastle’s big improvement (we won at Everton on his debut), since he came into the Magpies first team.

Newcastle fans may be surprised that Newcastle are after a new striker with Carroll, Ameobi, Best, Ranger, Xisco and Peter Lovenkrands all currently at the club.

But if the club do bring in the Slovenian, you can bet one or two of the fringe strikers at the club will be departing in January, with both Best and Xisco being the obvious two to be first on that list.

In October,  Matavž scored three goals for Slovenia in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying match against the Faroe Islands (Newcastle’s Jóan Edmundsson played in that game), and at 21, became the youngest player ever to score a hat-trick for his country.

Tim’s five year contract runs through the summer of 2012, so Newcastle would need to pay a fee to Groningen, and from what we can tell this lad looks very decent, and of course fits the profile perfectly of players the club wants to sign.

Why didnt Xisco get his chance against Arsenal in the CCup? now that we’re out of the competition, will he or lovenkrands ever get to play?
I feel for lovenkrands though, been awefully quiet from him. Did so well for us in the CCC, now totally off the radar! Ranger has pushed himself ahead of him as well. Although, I heard that he recently got a call to play for Denmark, which is a good sign.

I must have Peter Lovenkrands on the brain – two of them at Newcastle. 😀
    Corrected it – thanks.

he was a 75th minute sub against portugal or something, someone posted a link in another article and lovenkrands has said if fc copenhagen came in for him he would go to save his international career. i say let him go, he done us a job in the ccc and i do like him as a player hes got a little pace and craftyness about him if he can go play for a club in his homeland and get into his national team i say good luck to the bloke

It’s obvious Xisco and Best have been deemed not up to scratch and it seems that Lovenkrands is also starting to fall into that category. That only leaves Andy, Shola and Nile and Shola is very injury prone.
A new forward is a necessity in my opinion. Whether this guy is good enough I don’t know but if he is recommended by Graham Carr we shouldn’t have a problem judging by Tiote’s performances.

Best is crap – brought in on CC’s recommendations.

Lovenkrands did us a job in the fizzy pop but has never really taken to the EPL.

Xisco seems to have gone missing again, I dont know why really, because he looked good in pre-season.

So like wynsleap // Nov 9, 2010 at 1:38 PM says, We are left with 3 players competing for 2 places, and also like wynsleap mentions, Shola is injury prone.

Ed it is ok saying ‘one or two should leave in January’ if we sign this lad but the truth is that they are on contracts and unless a club comes in for them they will be going nowhere.

I’d rather take Itay Shechter whom we’ve also actually scouted. Looks really good.

I’ll be honest here, I had never heard of him until the thread appeared. Although according to some of his stats he has appeared in several games I have watched? Did a bit of a dennis wise scouting mission (youtube) and seen a few of his goals, and he looks a little lightweight for the prem for me, but then again, so do quite a few established prem forwards. I wouldn’t mind a loan deal for him if possible.

I can see Loven, best and Xisco been shipped in the winter, either sold or loan. Those have not had a chance, with Shola and Andy getting goals, and Ranger looking impressive.

Matavz is a good player, saw him play a friendly in the summer v Murcia, looks to be a big prospect for Slovenia.
