With Joey Barton getting his 3 match suspension last night for violent conduct, and Cheick Tiote also picking up his 5th yellow card against Blackburn, two of our best players this season will not be available for the game at home to Fulham tomorrow.
Sol Campbell – to get start tomorrow?
That’s a pity, but looking on the bright side it does give chances to some of our squad players, and that squad has already proved itself one of the strongest Newcastle have had for a few years.
Chris Hughton may have been going to change things around in any case, with tomorrow’s game being our 3rd game in 6 days, but now he has no choice about it.
We also hope that Ameobi isn’t even on the bench tomorrow, and we say that because he’s obviously got a thigh strain, which in past times he would play through, but that’s one reason Shola has been injured so much in his Newcastle career, so we hope that Shola doesn’t play at all tomorrow.
There’s also a chance that one of our center-backs will be rested, to give either Steven Taylor or Sol Campbell a game, as the team has given away far too many goals this season.
Defense is an area we need to improve on – and we can even measure that improvement by how many clean sheets we can start getting. We’ve had only three so far this season in our 15 games in both league and cup.
So as far as changes tomorrow, here are some that Chris may make:
- Steven Taylor or Sol Campbell for Mike Williamson
- Peter Lovenkrands or Nile Ranger for Shola Ameobi
- Alan Smith for Cheick Tiote
- Danny Guthrie, Wayne Routledge or Ryan Taylor for Joey Barton
So that’s at least 4 changes from the side that’s been unchanged these last 4 league games.
Its going to be very interesting 30 minutes before KO tomorrow, to see the team that Chris has selected – but as we said, on the bright side, it’s going to give some of our squad players a chance.
What do you think the team should be tomorrow?
We need to get back to our winning ways, and a win tomorrow will see us in a very good position in the league.
Note – after putting this article out we realized it was only Cheick’s 4th yellow card on Wednesday night – so that’s good news – and he will be in the line up tomorrow – sorry about the error.
