Chris Hughton has reaffirmed to the Newcastle Journal this morning that he will not be bringing in any new players in the January transfer window.
Chris Hughton – we have a good squad already
In an interview today he says the Newcastle squad is strong and there is no need to bring in any new players even though Newcastle lost the great Hatem Ben Arfa with a broken leg 6 weeks ago.
This is what Chris said today:
“I am disappointed to have lost a player of Hatem’s quality but we will not overreact to one injury in what is a very strong squad.”
“We won’t be adding to the squad in January – I feel we have a lot of strength in depth with the players we have already and there’s no need to add to it.”
“We completed our squad before the last transfer window and I’m extremely pleased with the players we have brought in.”
“Mike Ashley and the board were very financially supportive and together we did some very good business in the summer.”
It’s a little surprising Chris has said almost exactly the things he said about a month ago, but maybe he means it, and no new players will be coming in.
Certainly we are starting to get more worried about players like Ryan Taylor and Peter Lovenkrands, who are getting very little playing time, and may even want to leave the club in January.
If Chris wants to keep improving his squad it may be that some players have already served their purpose at the club, and some will need to be moved out to accommodate new and better players coming in.
However, it looks like Chris will do none of this in January, and will wait until the summer to reassess the squad, and depending on where we finish in the league will decide just how the team is strengthened.
Comments always welcome.
