It’s been so like a soap opera since Saturday evening with Newcastle striker Andy Carroll – perhaps a TV channel will pick it up.
The Andy Carroll Show – top ratings
Andy was included in the England squad for the first time on Saturday evening at around 9:00 pm when the news broke, and everybody connected with the boy was just delighted for him and the Newcastle club.
But then on Sunday it was revealed he had picked up a groin injury near the end of the game with Fulham, and that Andy was devastated he would miss his opportunity to play for the very first time for his country.
It was even worse because the news seeping through was that Fabio Capello had even planned to start Andy against France at Wembley – how unlucky can you be?.
Then the news that although Andy was injured, he had still been asked to join the England squad in a Watford hotel and he traveled down on Sunday night.
And then on Monday morning it was revealed the 21 year-old was being kept in London, and given treatment for the groin injury and then the news that at 5:00 pm that day, Andy had a scan on the groin injury, and it looked so promising that Andy would be allowed to train on Tuesday morning with the full squad on the Wembley pitch.
And once Andy came through that training session and seemed OK, England manager Fabio Capello was very quick to let it be known that Andy would start the game against France.
And then in his news conference yesterday afternoon, Fabio seemed to wax lyrical about the Gateshead-born striker that he was a good header of the ball, he was the England future, he was a very good technical player and he was a fighter.
And even when asked about his recent misdemeanors Fabio gave a wry smile and said that everybody makes mistakes when they are young, and he asked for the England senior players in the squad to help the youngster become a top class professional.
And it was very clear Fabio Capello had very quickly become a real Andy Carroll fan!
And then this morning we hear that Newcastle are now concerned that Andy will play tonight, because they think he is not fully fit, and of course Newcastle don’t want him to get injured tonight and then miss the important game at Bolton on Saturday.
So that’s the soap opera that’s been grabbing all the headlines this week to be sure.
And of course the same thing happened when Alan Shearer played for England and was the captain, and before the England games there would be this mania on what was happening with Alan – but that’s sports for you, and particularly football – the most popular game in the world by far.
There’s also considerable excitement on Tyneside of course, as Andy could become the third local lad to wear both the Newcastle number 9 shirt and England number 9 shirt – following in the fantastic footsteps of our all time greats – Jackie Milburn and Alan Shearer.
All we need now is for Andy to play the first half tonight, and score a wonderful headed goal – and come away injury free.
Yes, it’s been a soap opera this wee for sure, but we think young Andy Carroll will need to get used to it, because if the lad is as good as we think he is, he’ll be playing for both Newcastle and England for many years to come.
