Good news about new signing Dan Gosling, who has yet to play for Newcastle, is that he is back in training and has further stepped up his recovery from the ACL knee injury he suffered last March playing for Everton at Wolves.
Dan Gosling – back in training with Reserves this week
Dan Gosling is shown above doing some training with the Reserve squad this week, and it’s great to see Dan getting back to playing again.
This is what Dan told the Newcastle United official site today:
“I’m basically doing my pre-season now,” “I’ve stepped it up over the last couple of weeks and I’m just building up my fitness really so I can go back to the first-team and not look like a fool!”
“The knee itself feels good. I’ve just got to build up the muscles around it still, but that will come within the next few weeks so I’m really getting there now.”
“So it’s just fitness and the latter stages of the muscle-building, and then I should be on my way.” “It feels like I’m back now, but I’m not quite there so I have to be careful, but things are looking up.”
“I feel strong and it’s a huge weight off my shoulders now, knowing I’m coming in and going outside and not just in the gym.”
It must be really difficult for these lads to overcome these long term injuries but it will be great to see Dan in action for Newcastle.
The Brixham-born player is 6’0″ tall and still only 20 years old and has made 61 first class club appearances with 8 goals, and has so far played twice for the England U21 side.
Dan will of course face stiff competition for a place in the Newcastle side, as the Magpies squad continues to get stronger, and we would think he could be fully fit by the beginning of next year, which was the target date.
And while we are on long term injuries our thoughts are also with Hatem Ben Arfa, and at the beginning of every month we’ll do some articles on him, so he knows he’s not being forgotten as he returns from his broken leg.
Ryan Taylor is also out for up to 12 weeks with his recent ankle injury, so we have three good players out with long term injuries at the moment, with Steven Taylor having just returned from his shoulder injury, and we expect Steve Harper to be back again in just a few weeks time.
It’s really good news to see Dan Gosling kicking a ball again.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Don`t know whether the following is brilliant or lunacy, leave it upto you.
Against Bolton who can play a bit under Coyle but are still physical why not try the following,
—————–Krul
Saylor—-Williams—-Sol—-Jose
—————-Collo
Simpson—Guthrie—Nolan—-Jonas
—————Carrol
Strong defence/midfield. When on the break Nolan/Jonas to support and Collo fills in.??

Comment #2absolute lunacy, sorry CT but against a team like bolton why play 6 defenders when we are technically better than them? stick how we are and let our footballing ability run them ragged while they try and play brute football

I agree with beating them on the ground. Think we’ll see the same line up as Fulham and hopefully the run outs Lover and Guthrie got will work wonders. Guthrie’s crosses were getting better as the match went on, and Lover had more than a couple of shots on goal – match sharpness is all that they need.

Comment #6It’s going to be awsome to see Gosling in a NUFC-shirt playing at 100%. Lets welcome him back and give him time to settle in. But let’s also remember that he is still young and not there quite yet. Personally I haven’t seen all that much of him so I’m excited to see more of what he can do.
And how about this. OK, so Chris has said that we aren’t going to buy in january, but I still think there are some bargains out there that would be foolish to overlook. We all know that our scouts have watched the norwegian Huseklepp earlier this summer. The fact is that he has now had a terrific autumn at national level and I’m quite sure that he would add some exciting things to our squad. The man has this autumn scored against France, Portugal and last night against Ireland. He plays both up front or as a right winger which suits us brilliantly. He actually reminds a bit about our own Gutierrez except that he has a smarter way of moving and better crosses. He’s an ok finisher with mobility and “pace with ball” as his strongest qualities. I’m not saying that he has perfect crosses but he is a really exciting player which I think would join us in a split second in january for a cut-price 😉 what do you think?

Comment #7Lads, we need to be strong against Bolton, they`ve had some good results lately and score goals.
OK then, Saylor out, Simpson back at RB.
Ranger wide right(a la Chelsea game)
Guthrie got play in the middle, our form last season improved when he moved inside.

Comment #8Hmm ! You gotta remember Owen Coyle`s Bolton is not BSA`s Bolton, yeah they have some of the same players but play a different game altogether.
Along with Hughton , Coyle IMO is one of the surprises as far as management goes, having brought an old first division side(Burnley) back to the top level a coupla seasons ago and look where he has Bo;ton now !
Looking forward to the game, should be a tactical battle between two up and coming managers, both in charge of teams who punch above their weight.
Perhaps the result will be an indication of just exactly how good each side is and what to expect for the rest of the season.
I warned not to be overconfident prior to playing against BSA`s Blackburn, which unfortunately for us turned out to be true, though we in fact outplayed them.
Anyhow, should be a good game with two good managers who have their sides playing well.

Comment #9As for young Gosling, exactly where is he expected to fit into the side, I mean is he a DM, an AM or what ?
And when is he expected to make an appearance ?
Were we to bring in one or two new faces during the next window, we would be well on the way to having a side rhat could compete with the best in the league.
One that would give Hughton the headache of having to satisfy every ones desire to be penciled in each game.
He should be so lucky !
Right now it`s survival we have to be concerned about .

Comment #10Gosling’s play reminds me of Guthrie’s in a strange kind of way. I rate him above Guthrie on technical ability, though.
He can play a few positions, DM, MC, RM and has slotted in at RB on more than a few occasions but he’s probably better at DM/RM imo.

Comment #13Chuck @ post 9. DG is an old fashioned type box-to-box midfielder, who can play anywhere through the centre. Think young Scott Parker, when he was at Charlton. I can remember him playing once wide right, but he wasn’t particularly effective there.

Comment #14I really can’t wait for Gosling to get a run in the team, I really rate this kid. He reads the game really well, can pass the ball well, and his movement is fantastic. The only thing he lacks is a bit of flair, but to fair to him, it’s because he’s English and we don’t do flair!

Comment #17I can`t see many players coming in Jan but when everyone fit we have a good squad.
Gosling and Benny will be two new classy additions and give us options.
Still fancy a quick and tricky striker tho, Lucciano Becchio at Leeds would be worth a go.
Think he`s 25 or 26 years old, Argentinian and came through the youths with Tevez at Boca, played in Barca reserves and won`t break the bank. Fast, strong, tricky and scores goals.

Comment #18So ! i take it he can either fill in for Tiote or Barton, or perhaps Nolan and could in a pinch fill in on defense ?
Seems like an O`Shea type utility player, a very valuable guy to have on the bench.

Reading the Bolton blogs, they are hoping for no Shola!

Comment #28I’d love to see us go to Bolton and play football on the deck, but the sad fact is we probably hoof it more up to carroll than any other team. It’s not carroll’s fault, it’s just he’s like a beacon and we keep banging aimless 60 year balls !!!
