It seems that Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has just been rewarded for his excellent play since he was signed for just £1M from Portsmouth last January, with an improved contract on Tyneside.
Mike Williamson – in action against Blackburn recently
Mike’s new improved contract came quite quickly, as he has shown this season that he can play in the Premier League, and of course he is still improving after playing 15 games so far this season.
In total Mike has played 32 times for Newcastle and was previously at Wycombe Wanderers, Watford and the Stoke-on-Trent born player went to Portsmouth on September 1st last year, for a nightmare 4 months before Newcastle rescued him last January.
It seems that Pompey were in so much financial trouble that they failed to play Mike in a single game, because they would owe Watford money if he ever made his debut at Portsmouth .
And of course Portsmouth went into bankruptcy a little later and were relegated from the Premier League last season after getting 9 points deducted for going into administration.
It’s therefore not too surprising that Mike has waxed lyrical about the Newcastle club ever since he arrived, and as far as we can see Mike is continuing to improve this season.
Mike was signed by Portsmouth for £3M, but he’s worth a lot more than that now, that’s for sure.
It was reported last week that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in the player, but it would appear that Harry Redknapp has developed a passion for Newcastle players.
Harry has also been reported interested in 21 year-old Andy Carroll (isn’t everybody), and today the news is that he is ready to bid £8M for Spanish left back Jose Enrique.
Harry has 0.09% chance of signing any of the three players he’s interested in – and that’s being optimistic.

Comment #1strange timing as he’s been very poor the last 5/6 games and been really found wanting. Think I would have taken Spurs 4m offer.

Comment #2Ashley has just raised Williamson’s price tag by giving him a 3 year contract, END OF.

Comment #3If he signs that contract FA will likely give him a 3 year ban for retaliating on Elmander.
What is it with the Brit officials, the guy that responds gets the trouible. You should be more like your Canadian cousins & institute that “instigation” penalty. What the heck, you give one for diving, why not for starting trouble?

Comment #4“Mike is continuing to improve this season.”
Personally, I think he’s regressing :/
If Spurs come calling in January with a £5 million bid, I’d think carefully about it

Comment #9Thump – That has been my hope all season. We might be taking up an attractive position in the league, but were only 4 points off a relegation spot.

Comment #10Well according to TalkSport, we signed Williamson for a reported £3m – http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/2924/6/williamson-shuns-spurs-sign-new-newcastle-deal
But we all know how accurate that websh!te is don’t we, they can’t even get the amount we paid for him correct.. lol
So that 2 players banned by the FA, am I the only one who thinks the FA have it for us now, since our HBA protest????? Don’t see many other clubs getting players banned by the FA lately!!!

Comment #11Seems strange the FA would want a club that can draw a crowd home or away being pushed towards relegation because of their silly administrative gamesmanship. Of course, you can’t fight back against the FA, they hold all the trump cards.
So what we must have is a dust up between NUFC mgt. and the FA, and/or CH is a coach teaching dirty football, and/or NUFC have players on the pitch annoying the refs to the extent they wave their cards at NUFC players when in doubt. Carroll and Barton are getting savaged weekly and the refs look the other way.
(If I were CH, I’d tape certain NUFC players mouths closed to test the last theory.)

Comment #12I totally agree bentoon, but given some of our performances (Villa, Mackems, Arsenal – even Man City) I was hoping for a bit more deep down.
@solaidback: Notice how it’s retrospective action once again. I don’t give a toss what they said about Howard Webb not seeing it – he certainly bloody did and even waved play on along with his assistant (at least I saw a reaction from Webb and the assistant and it certainly wasn’t a red card) – how is this any different from Ben Arfa? Have the FA decided to actually execute the clause we were begging them to take on De Jong?
Makes me sick, it honestly does.

Comment #13Just wonder who goes next. Krul for punching the ball too hard? Carroll for falling to the ground after being under cut (He jumped too high & endangered the defenders!)? CH for not making subs when the ref wanted one? Monty & Magie for tweeting during the game? Willo sure has had a bunch of mid-field retreating confrontations, this must be payup time by the FA.

Comment #14C`mon, stop complaining, the FA have reviewed the video and are convinced “Williamson dun dun it and their aint no sense in talkin bout it no mo”.
As for BA`s situation, no similarity, so let it lie !
Williamson ?
Aint my idea of a good central defender.
And improving ?
Yeah he should be, but i aint seen it.
Arry offering three million, jump on it !
Think it`s mostly bull***t from the tabloids.
If Ashley had any conception of football he would be concentrating on signing Steve Taylor, rather than be giving someone like Williamson (average at best) a contract.
And listen guys, get rid of the we are being picked on rap, it`s getting old!

Look at how many goals have been down to him lately. He’s certainly going through a rough spell and 3 games out may be a blessing.
As much as I hate the FA you can’t really argue with either Colo, Willo or Barton getting banned.
Puching and elbowing are not really in the rules !!! I don’t know where this kind of behaviour is all coming from.
Yes we’ve been done over with De Jong etc, but 2 wrongs don’t make a right.

Comment #18Are some of you guys for real!! Willo has been superb for us for nearly a year now. Fair enough he hasn’t played his best in the past couple of games but get off his back……
Why do you think arry would be interested in him if he is so bad!!
Chuck – take £3m for him? Who exactly would you buy for that money to replace him…. Don’t make me laugh

Comment #19Got to agree that Williamson has been an excellent buy.
I’m not sure what’s going on with S. Taylor?
Are we still trying to get him to sign a new contract?
We’re lucky we have two excellent centre backs available as replacements.
I hope we can get Taylor to sign. It would be a shame to the lad leave.

Comment #20I love how most of the comments are saying they would consider an offer for him in January if it was around 4 or 5 million, can you tell me where we going to get another good CB for that price?
I think he is a hard working defender and i still think he has a big part to play at Newcastle, we need to have a stable defense that is what most other teams have!
