Both Steven Taylor and Sol Campbell played very well for Newcastle on Sunday, and Steven has talked about the game today to the Evening Chronicle.
Steven Taylor challenges Didier Drogba on Sunday
This is what Taylor said today:
“It was an unbelievable feeling to be back playing after 11 months.” “I got a chance to play with Sol Campbell at the back – who I had played with in a reserve game against Manchester City – and it was an unbelievable feeling to be back.”
“We’re in the team now, and hopefully we’ll get another chance to play at West Brom.” “We’ve just got to take it game by game.” “The nerves were kicking in before the game – it was a massive match for us.”
It was a massive match indeed, and the Newcastle side came through it with flying colors, and Sol and Steven both played their part at the back, especially since it was the first league start of the season for both players.
And we noticed that Sol was talking continuously to the back line throughout the game, as he tried to get more communication between the back four, and to stop the mistakes the lads made against Blackburn and Bolton, and it seemed to work well.
The defensive display from the team was very good, and light years better than at the Reebok Stadium a short 8 days previously.
Steven continued:
“I enjoyed having him talking to me all the game – he’s been there and done it.” “I can learn from Sol – he’s fantastic.”“Once I was out there and warming up, the nerves went.”
“When the whistle went, I was straight back into it.” “I won my first header against Drogba, and felt good.”
“We could have won the game, but in many ways, it couldn’t have gone better.” “We came through it with no injuries, and got a great point.” “The lads were fantastic.”
In fact it was in the second minute when Taylor had a header that was well saved by Peter Cech, and the ball went to Shola Ameobi and the local striker missed a good chance.
Taylor and Sol Campbell will almost certainly start at the Hawthorns on Sunday, which is again an early kick off time at 1:30 pm.
Steven seemed pleased with the Magpies’ display against the Premier League Champions:
“We were unlucky not to score a second goal. We had chances, and they had chances.” “I thought we started well. They didn’t expect us to start at the tempo we did, we were right in their faces. Maybe they expected us to sit back and defend, but that wasn’t happening.”
“We rattled them. We pressed in midfield, and forced errors from their back four. We came out for the second half, and were on top.” “The end of the game was a bit open, and Nile Ranger came on and had a couple of chances.”
Steven is not allowed to talk about his contract negotiations but the news today is he’s been offered a new deal by the club, and we really hope the 24 year-old signs it – and quickly.
We’ve always thought the Greenwich-born player was Premier League class, and that he can do a good job for Newcastle in the years that lie ahead.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Of course Tayor can learn from Sol and I hope he stays around to do so.
However, the rumour mill’s started again with Rednapp supposedly interested (just when is that guy appearing in court?).

Assuming that Taylor’s still using Stretford as his agent, then I think that he might encourage his client to move on.

Comment #3I like Steven and Sol they really added something new to our game yesterday. I really think Coloccini and Williamson have some worrying on how secure their spot is. Sol was incredible yesterday and really led the team. You could just see the presence he had on the field. Great signing

Comment #10Why do we only ever have ‘one’ star striker.
Cole
Shearer
Carroll
In the transfer window, i would purchase
Schweinsteiger – not sure how much he’s worth, but he’d be great.
Ryan Babel – He has some quality in him, unsettled, could be a decent buy at around £4m.
Santa Cruz – Definitely unsettled, loooking at other options, good finisher at around £4m.
Who would you buy?

Basti Schweinsteiger (Love that name = Pig climber) is midfield and not a forward/striker. He is also vice captain at Bayern and has been there since he was a kid (14), so I don’t think we’d get him for any less than €35,ooo,000

Comment #13GG @ 12. Austrian feller at work seems to think the direct translation is ‘Pig-Mounter’? I have no idea like being a typical Englishman, and therefore completely ignorant when it comes to foreign languages.

Steig ein Berg = Climb a mountain. Steig ein Pferd = Mount a horse. Germans have one word for the English two. Take your pick.
