The Evening Chronicle, who we hope are close to the happenings at the Newcastle club today, have said that the club will start their interviews today with candidates for the post of Newcastle manager.
Martin Jol – expected to be one of three candidates interviewed
And they are saying the three candidates are Alan Pardew, Alan Curbishley and Martin Jol.
But from the polls we conducted on this site last night neither of the two Alans – Pardew and Curbishley – both Londoners by the way – would be other than terrible choices to Newcastle fans.
If those three candidates are all the club has to choose from, then it would appear that Martin Jol would be the most popular choice of the fans.
It also appears that Martin Jol’s resignation caught the club by surprise last night, and we still don’t know for sure if it’s linked with the Newcastle vacancy.
It could be that Martin wanted to get himself out of Ajax, after the club prevented him from leaving Ajax for the Fulham job in the summer.
One interesting fact to emerge today is that Mike Ashley’s key footballing confidant is his former Sports Direct employee Paul Kemsley, and he was Tottenham’s vice-chairman when Martin Jol was manager at Spurs.
So we suppose Paul will be able to give Mike Ashley the lowdown on how good a manger Martin Jol was at the London club.
We have to hope (should that be pray?), that other candidates will emerge and come into the reckoning today – and we don’t think Curbishley or Pardew are what the clubs needs right now.
What do you think?
