Birmingham have just been beaten 1-0 at Wolves, and would you believe it – Wolves were even the better side.
Alan Pardew – first challenge is at Birmingham next Saturday
And the game was important, in that Newcastle visit St. Andrew’s next Saturday afternoon – with a 3:00 pm kick-off.
In the general scheme of things a game at Birmingham would be one most fans would expect Newcastle to be able to win.
But with the topsy turvy season Newcastle have had so far, and if they keep that up next Saturday, the likelihood is the lads could lose against mediocre Birmingham, after just beating 5 time European Champions Liverpool 3-1.
And that’s where Alan Pardew comes in, because if he can start to get some consistency into the Newcastle side, and keep the defense a lot more solid than it’s been for most of the season, then a win next Saturday would show he’s off to an excellent start in his Newcastle career.
Newcastle have had some great wins this season, being able to beat Aston Villa, Everton, Sunderland, Arsenal, Chelsea in the Carling Cup and now Liverpool.
But then contrast that with games the side has lost to Blackpool, Stoke City, Blackburn and West Brom, teams we would have been expected to beat, and it’s been up and down season so far. Few would disagree with that.
Since it was an up yesterday – a huge win – Newcastle don’t often beat Liverpool, will it now be followed by a down at St. Andrew’s?
The Newcastle senior players and Alan Pardew himself have said the win yesterday was due to the guts and determination of the Newcastle players, and in a way it was also a thank you to the departed Chris Hughton – so Alan takes no credit for the win yesterday, and he shouldn’t either.
But next Saturday is different and a win – when we should win – would go down very well with the Newcastle fans.
So if Alan wants to get in the good books of the Newcastle fans quickly then a good first step would be to win the game at Birmingham – and it’s hardly an impossible task, especially with Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton, Andy Carroll and Cheick Tiote all available, and Williamson and Coloccini likely to return to bolster the Newcastle defense.
And we’d also like to see 19 year-old Nile Ranger get a start, in the absence of Shola Ameobi through injury, as the London lad looked so energetic and powerful, and he worked his socks off in those last 35 minutes.
And didn’t he just scare the living daylights out of those Liverpool defenders? 😀
Howay The Lads – we can do it!!

i know, i really hope he put it in his match report as joey is going to be crucial in our next few games.
Lew, its about the FA are going to look into something that barton did to torres if it isnt in the ref’s report. to be fair they were both having a go at each other and if anything torres was in the wrong

Comment #47Barton pointing at Torres?! My god! Sack him from the game, we can’t possibly have a man pointing at another man during a game!
Don’t you just love Sundays?
No doubt Newcastle will put in a cheeky bid for Tevez if he is up for sale.

Comment #50Lew Davies, As Thump say’s. Don’t think there’s much to it. If the FA was to do Joey it would look like a vendetta.

Comment #51This gesture? Wouldn’t be when he was grabbing his crotch when shouting at Torres would it? Would that be frowned on by the fa? Jesus, I hope not coz that’s pretty pedantic, seems like everything he does is scrutinised!

Comment #67i love when Alan Pardew sub Ameobi on the 60 mins and replace him with Hungry Ranger
Thats the key!
if CH, he would wait till the 75 mins, which is a bit late to introduce ranger
For the birmingham game, start with lazy ameobi then gave ranger the supersub role

Comment #74I quite like Dennis’ 3-4-3 but I’d have Enrique rather than Jonas.
I think an average team plays 4-4-2, a good team plays 4-3-3 and an outstanding team plays 3-4-3 a la Brazil.
At this point only urgent changes needed are Sol and Ameobi out, with Colo and Ranger back in.
