Chris Hughton said a number of times before he left, that he was happy with the squad and there would be no transfer activity this January.
Alan Pardew – must do well in transfer market
But we have to think that now Alan Pardew is at the club, there will be some, and maybe fairly significant too.
For one thing if the news is true about Steven Taylor, the local lad will be shipped out for as much as we can get for him – but we’ll be lucky to get £4M because his contract runs out in June.
It’s not nice to see a local lad leave the club, but we respect Steven to make his own decision, and thank him for his 175 games for the club – he always gave 100% for Newcastle.
And we hear that Rickie Lambert may be coming to Newcastle, and the 28 year old striker is at Alan’s former club, Southampton.
I talked to my best man yesterday about Rickie, because he still lives in Southampton and is a big supporter – they got beat at home 2-0 to Brentford on Saturday.
The news is he’s physical and strong but not too speedy, and he is useful at free kicks and penalties – but that assessment doesn’t really inspire us that he will be a good buy for the club.
The other news is the Newcastle could go after Marlon Harewood, and we suppose that would be OK – the man gives 100% and has done OK for Blackpool, and he would walk to Newcastle if he was offered a permanent deal.
And then there may be other players move out with Steven – and they could include Leon Best and Xisco, who both seem not to be good enough for Newcastle, although Pardew may want to give Leon some more time.
James Perch could be kept because he’s a decent utility player, who can play anywhere across the back four.
And then there are the loan moves that may be possible, and we’d be very happy to have Landon Donovan or Adam Johnson on loan – or both? In fact we’d be delighted.
Landon can only come until the end of March – because of his MLS commitments, but Adam could play through the end of the season – so maybe Newcastle could get both – but that’s unlikely.
Between the two of them maybe we’d probably prefer Adam – he’s a local lad and he could also stay though the end of the season – but Landon is a great player – no doubt about that.
And one of our favorite players – yes readers are sick of me bringing this up – Seb Larsson of Birmingham – could be available for a free this summer, so could be acquired cheaply in January.
That will depend on how the new manager rates the Swedish International of course.
So it seems that Newcastle will wheel and deal in the transfer market in January, but Alan will have to be spot on with whom he brings in – because one thing that could have counted against Chris Hughton was his acquisition of Perch and Best, and maybe even Wayne Routledge may still not make the grade – but we hope so..
I may have missed a few players out here, since my internet connection went down about 75 minutes ago, and I had to rush to the local McDonalds, and it’s still only 6:30 am over here – to give them the credit it’s AT&T DSL – which I’ve just switched to from Time Warner Road Runner.
When I called the AT&T 7 by 24 hot line – they said service wouldn’t be available until 6:00 EDT – go figure.
Let us know who you think could be coming and going this January.
It could be an interesting transfer window in January, and if nothing else will be exciting time for Newcastle fans everywhere, and that’s got to be good.
Howay The Lads!!
