There is news today, which may or may not be true, that Birmingham and Newcastle are after former Southampton loan player Papa Waigo, and would like to sign the player in January, at least according to reports in Italy.
Papa Waigo – while at Southampton last season
We should expect any player Alan Pardew has been associated with – ever – to be interesting Newcastle from now until the end of the January transfer window – now that Alan is the manager on Tyneside. 😀
Waigo, full name – Papa Waigo N’Diaye – can play on the wing or up front as a striker, and has played 15 times for Senegal, his country of birth, and while on loan at Southampton last season, played 35 times with 5 goals, while Pardew was managing the club.
It may be that Alan thinks the player could do a job at Newcastle, and if that is the case, the story may even have some truth in it – but this also has all the elements of a made-up story.
Waigo himself is said to want to play in the Premier League in England, (who doesn’t?), but we haven’t seen the player, and therefore have no idea what he’s like but we’ll check our sources in Southampton.
However well he did at Southampton, that was in League One, England’s third tier, and the Premier League is a totally different proposition, as most players find out.
Italian clubs Ascoli (Serie B) and Chievo (Serie A) are also said to be interested in signing the 26-year-old in January.
The 6’1″ tall Waigo has previously played at Verona, Cesena, Genoa, Fiorentina, Lecce (loan) and for Southampton on loan last season, so if Pardew is really interested in the lad, we’d think he’d be in the drivers seat to get him.
In any case, who would want to play for Birmingham when they could play for Newcastle United?
Yes – that may be a slightly biased opinion – OK – sorry Birmingham fans – just kidding.
We have no idea whether this player would improve Newcastle’s striking options in January, so if there are any readers who have seen this player at Southampton, maybe they can add a comment on how good he is.
