Pardew Interested In Another Southampton Player – Why?

News today that Alan Pardew wants to sign 26 year-old Southampton defender Jose Fonte for his new club Newcastle United.

Jose Fonte – are Newcastle interested in this Portuguese defender?

We have some concerns about  bringing in untested Southampton players to Newcastle, however well they are playing in League One, because there’s just a huge jump in class to be playing in the Premier League.

We heard yesterday that Alan could be interested in former Southampton loan player Papa Waigo, but our sources in Southampton say he was a decent enough player for Southampton, but wonder if he could make the grade in the Premier League.

Pardew reckons he can land the 26-year-old Fonte for as little as £1.5M, but will he be another James Perch, and will struggle to make the grade  in the Premier League at Newcastle?

And that could turn out to be a waste of £1.5M  in the transfer market if  the player is not good enough once he arrives on Tyneside. He’s never played for the full Portuguese side.

Fonte still has three years left on his contract, but the first question would be – is this player good enough to play for Newcastle?

It’s not obvious to us that the answer to the question is yes.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

We need to build on the team we have on the pitch not the team that can’t even make the bench.

this is probably lazy journo’s it happens every time a manager joins a club soon after leaving another one.

the press are probably also trying to get the fans on pardews back. if we believe the papers we are signing half the saints players and there backroom staff

the link actually appeared yesterday, but as slazberger says, it’s just easy column inch filler for lazy tabloid hacks.

manager joins club, clearly manager must want to buy players from his old club, or else why would he have bought them for his old club?

thing they forget is, not every manager is harry redknapp.

Lol dont know why you take these trash stories and give them more attention. Pardew was southampton manager, now he is newcastle manager… in a journos mind its an easy story.

Pardew already been talking today to ssn about how he can only bring in players big enough to carry the shirt, because it is a heavy shirt. Nail on the head there. The guy talks a lot of sense sometimes

How come you lay so much weight in these obviously rubbish rumors? Journalists think they’re so smart linking Pardew with his former players. There prob nowt in this.

Especially not Fonte. It’s well known that Pardew rattled his woman.

This is just SHEER MADNESS. Why the hell would you see Taylor move to another club a top club at that and then bring in a player from the first division??????? This is not the way forward, its a step backwards its a shame those at the top can not see this. I only hope this is rubbish.

There are players available with EPL experience like D.Wheater, Larrson, C. Davies just to name a few. Going for player that are 26 years of age in the first division is pointless. They are in that division for a reason.

I’m surprised the press haven’t linked us with Bent yet after he said all those complementary things about Pardew!

Why the hell should we sign this guy? Never heard of him ? There is no point signing players that aren’t experienced at the premier league.

My mate works in qatar and has just come back home for Xmas. He was saying that the news over there is that these rich owners want to but an EPL club either Newcastle united or Everton. This is to advertise for their world cup as they do not even have a league over there. They are interested in us because of our fan base and the fact we fill a stadium week in week out, god knows why they are interested in Everton lol.

Just been looking on sky sports website an they are talking bout players who may be on way to prem in january from Dutch league. Apparently Toivonen from psv would like to play at Newcastle. Hope this is true, he’s scored 29 goals this season.

Toivonen has been linked with Liverpool (or the ideology of what it used to be, I suppose). It would definitely be a longshot.

One person, who plays for PSV that we should look into before it’s too late is Balazs Dzsudzsak. He’s hungarian, 23 years old, winger, has 2 less goals than Toivonen this season….as a winger.

Look at his stats. I think it says something when you come from one league and not only do your performances mirror those for your past employer, but you exceed those performances….albeit in a tougher league.

I live in Hungary and have seen him play for the national side here when they’ve played in BP and this kid is GOOD. damn good.

since my father became a fan of psv, that Carlos Salcido juice there, I’ve always liked the way of playing Ola Toivonen, its price is around 5 million euros, a price we could afford, would be a great signing for the club, as it can play midfielder, striker or midfield and add much.
psv other club players I’d like to arrive and would bring good things is amrabat and Otman Bakkal Nordin, who have not been taken into account by the technician in many games, but have much potential, amrabat price is 2.5 million euros and has 23 years of age and the Bakkal is 5.5 million and has 25 years of age

Whether you like Ashley or LLambo, whether you agree with their current policy, whether you want Mid east owners, this is unfortunately the reality.
    1) The wealthiest managers( use the term loosely) are Peter Reid/ Sam Allardyce/ Mark Hughes etc, why, because they got sacked on big contracts.
Which other industry(apart from bankers) are paid massive rewards for failure?
Seems more an incentive to fail than succeed!
    2) Hoots did not get an extension to his contract, why ? We all have our own opinions, but that guy will always have our respect,
3)£300 mill invested, 1st owner to put money in, none out??
1st £200 mill on offer, sell? C`mon do you really think that is how Ashley became successful?
4)Ashley/ Llambo as we do, know that season after next when the Platini new austerity rules kick in, level playing field, BIG TIME!! Arse model and youth/ sprinkled with quality experience is the model.
    5) Pards, wow underwhelmed when I heard, but he`s here and that`s it,
What`s the choice, spit our dummies out and complain, protest, lifes so unfair, the club is jinkxed( RUUD), Bla Bloody Bla, or do what is our duty, 50,000 shouted that team home against scousers, and they responded, BIG STYLE.

As a Crystal Palace fan (that dabbles in the Toon for my amusement here in the US) Fonte is actually very very good. He was Palaces best defender and the only reason he was sold to S’hampton was because we were in administration and they had the money. Skillset wise, he should not have been sold to L1, he’s a championship level defender that deserves the chance to play in the PL. If you do get him, you’ll be very pleasantly surprised. Talk to any Palace fan and ask them why we’re in the bottom half of the table and they’ll say that missing Fonte is a big reason.

What a absolutely grap artikle! Also some of the reactions on here to it!

Lets just sum up some facts shall we:

Pardew,s the trainer, he decides if a player is good enougth to come and play for us or not.

Pardew has trained in the lower leagues so he will know a good player when he sees one and if that particular player is Prem standard or not.

Some of you lads are so wound up with your hate for the Cockney duo that you seem to lose let your support for the club take second place.
If Pardew is interested in a player from a lower league then maybe is it more financially viable to go and get that player if he thinks he,s good enough.

Your right about about PSV! They have had some brilliant players over the last few years. In fact there are a lot of good players in the league across here who would jump at the chance to play in the Prem and would have the standard too. The frustrating thing is that the teams in UK including us don,t see that!

Hope we don’t buy from players Alan has just happened to come across. That’s foolish as it limits the pool. And, he has only come across lower division players. Our scouts who got in Tiote, Ben A., Enrique, Jonas can do their thing again. In general, lately we’ve been doing well with transfers, more hits than misses. just bring in 1 great player, build on the solid squad we have.

I think Pardew knows a player when he sees one although you never really know until they make the step up.

Hugo; seeing your comment reminded me of one that Bobby got wrong. ie Viana; now he was crap; and still is!!!
