Sky Sports is reporting today that Newcastle are prepared to sell Joey Barton for a cut-price fee of £1.5M in January.
Joey Barton – for sale in January?
This comes just a day after new manager Alan Pardew has said that he will not sell any of his top stars, so we have to wonder where this information is coming from, and Sky Sports is usually fairly reliable.
Bu £1.5M for Barton is a ridiculously low price, even if the Liverpudlian only has 18 months left on his current contract.
And we’ll not even mention he’s been one of Newcatsle’s best players this season.
If Newcastle are willing to sell their best players – what exactly is the strategy of this club for the future – to keep reducing the wage bill?
West Ham and Aston Villa are both interested in the player, but at £1.5M or even twice that amount, there will be a lot more clubs interested in Joey.
At 28 years of age he’s approaching his best form ever, and has already been mentioned as a possible England player again – he currently has one cap.
But who at the club is willing to sell one of our best players?
The only reason given by Sky Sports is that Newcastle want to further reduce their wage bill, and Joey is on around £60K/week, and presumably that could mean Newcastle are unwilling to offer him new terms that are anywhere near that figure.
So the club have got their messages crossed badly, if indeed this news has any truth in it at all – and we have to hope it doesn’t.
Let’s get this clear – Joey was out injured for around 5 months with a foot injury last season, and when he finally gets back to full fitness and starts to play a string of games in England’s top league, and is again one of Newcastle’s best players and scoring goals too – Newcastle want to sell him?
It makes no sense at all to us, and it can only be true if people who know nothing at all about football are running the Newcastle United club and making daft decisions like this – oh my – so it must be true. 😀
If Joey leaves in January we will be very upset – and have to hope that Sky Sports has got this story all wrong, but it’s worrying that this rumor about Joey keeps surfacing.
We would hope somebody at the club would come out and deny this rumor – and soon – after Alan Pardew only yesterday said Joey was going nowhere..
Comments welcome.

Comment #3Really, Rich? You can’t say you are bothered to lose our best midfielder ? and you really think he’ll be replaced?
This is ridiculous if this is true. No one else on our books can do the job Barton can do, and we sure as hell aren’t gonna get anyone anywhere near his level for 1.5m

Comment #5nothing i can say, just wondering why this happen to us when we struggle and make simple move back to top flight,
and don’t know what in Ashley and Pardew thinking right now if this the true story,
If they say to balance the wage bill, to me better sale the likes of smith, campbell, xisco or Gutrie, we have other option i think, the likes who can’t produce for us need to move, but why someone who committed, someone who want to pay us their debt, someone who at his form.
Please hope this just a rumor.

Comment #6I thought when Sky reported CH was going to be sacked, that it was rubbish. When they reported it would be AP replacing him, I thought that was also rubbish. What the foxtrot is going on here?

Comment #8If he does go, it won’t be a surprise as Ashley got rid of Hoots only a few weeks ago & no one wanted that to happen!!
If he sells Barton & for only £1.5m, it’ll be PL suicide because who else in our team can give Carroll the ammunition to score goals with???
Unless he’s selling Carroll as well, then we woudn’t need Barton to cross the ball…. maybe Ashley decided to sell all out good players & let the shyte that’s left play for the second half of the season!!!

Comment #9Selling Barton is just as bad as selling Carroll.
Its no coincidence that when Barton was banned we went on a poor run of form.
Why isn’t this obvious to people! If I can see that then surely a football proffessional can see it.
1.5m is a joke. He’s worth more than that in points he will get us from now untill his contract ends.
Carroll is a good player, a really good player. But he’s not Messi, he needs decent supply and Barton is the ONLY player in the team who can provide this.
Its just MAD. Unless we replace him with a player of similar quality this is another blunder from the fat jabba the hut wannabe.
Lets prey its just tabloid rubbish.
Supporters like NUFC_Richyg01 have about as much idea as Cashley and co.

Comment #13This better be a f*g joke! It would piss me off more than the Hoots fuck up!!! For me he has by far been our best player this season, we have nobody with any creativity from dead ball positions (other than Taylor but the rest of his play is very Dicey!), there’s no one who ever seem to be able to provide that creative pass through the centre than him.
And there’s no way we could afford to replace him with someone of a similar quality, unless Saints have got someone!!! Joke!

Comment #22Ashley wants more silverwear, so he’s targetted the league 1 title that Pardew always thought he was capable of winning at Southampton.
Small problem, we first need to drop two divisions…

Comment #23I think the only thinking behind this is that Barton is on huge wages and although he’s playing well now, he was recently out for 4 matches for suspension and a mystery illness which still happens too often for comfort.
It’s funny a while back I would have been all for him leaving, given all his previous on and off field antics but he has been exceptional this season without a doubt.
Maybe they feel that Ben Arfa will play that position in the long run. Who knows? it’s a strange one.

Comment #29As has been pointed out, Barton isn’t the only one on a high wage, (Colo, Smith, Xisco etc), the problem is we wouldn’t be able to find anyone better or as good as Barton without paying more than £1.5m plus a decent salary. Therfore I suspect we would not be replacing him and making do with what we’ve got and with Ben Arfa to come back.

Comment #30Transfer window is just around the corner welcome to silly season evry player who is playing well gets linked to another team, yesterday it was AC, this always happens this time of year, I cant see Barton going (a) if he wanted to go he would have to agree terms, of which he has stated he is toon and wants to go no where( b )- West ham wont be able to afford him/ wages when they are relgated, we only kept him due to ashley pumping money into the club when we went down.
This is just media pre transfer hype once again, as we seem to be a media easy target

Comment #37If Ashley let’s Barton go for £1.5 million then it’s just yet more proof his plan is simply short-sighted profit making, just to cut down wages at the expense of the quality of our team.
Like I said yesterday if we get rid of Barton then who’s his replacement?-Guthrie? Routledge? Ha, ne chance!
What a joke, wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if it’s true. I mean it only 2 days since Pardew went on record saying he’d be keeping Barton and Carroll so this would be Ashley undermining yet another of his appointed managers. Crazy, ridiculous and pointless-all Ashley’s trademark manouvres then eh!
