There was good news and bad news on the yellow card front after yesterday’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City.
Kevin Nolan battles De Jong yesterday
The good news is that for once Cheick Tiote did not pick up another yellow card to add to the eight he’s already received this season, but the bad news is that captain Kevin Nolan picked up his 5th yellow card, and will now be suspended for tomorrow night’s game. at White Hart Lane.
It turns out the Jermaine Defoe will also miss the game for Tottenham, after picking up a straight card from referee Martin Atkinson in the game at Aston Villa, for an elbow that didn’t even look like a foul to us, never mind a straight red card.
But Martin Atkinson put his stamp on the game at Aston Villa yesterday, but the never-say-die Tottenham side still won, after having 10 men for most of the game.
It doesn’t say too much about the Aston Villa side, who are going through a tough period under new manager Gerard Houllier.
We really have to ensure that PL referees don’t alter the outcome games by the many mistakes they seem to be making these days.
Another referee may not have even given a foul against the England striker for the offense he was sent off for – but there again Martin is top of the league with the red cards he’s dispensed this season.
It says something about the Newcastle squad that Kevin Nolan will be a big miss in tomorrow night’s game, and we’re not sure who may come in for him, although the odds have to be on Danny Guthrie, whose last appearance at WBA just wasn’t up to par.
So it could be another chance for Danny to show what he can do at Newcastle, and so far he’s had a rather poor season.
It will be another tough game for the Magpies, that’s for sure, but if Newcastle can refrain from giving Tottenham any gift goals, as we did yesterday to Man City, the lads may even be in with a chance of a point.
And Newcastle need to start picking up points soon, as we have but 5 from the last 21 points on offer. Not good.
