The Mail is reporting today that David Bentley is set for a move to Newcastle.
David Bentley – Newcastle in for this right winger
That comes on the heels of the news in the last couple of days that Tottenham want to sign David Beckham on loan through then end of March, at which time he will need to report back for training with MLS club, the LA Galaxy.
And it appears that new Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is a big fan of Bentley, who is now 26, and whose career has gone sadly wrong at Tottenham, after the English International made an excellent start at Blackburn Rovers, after initially beginning his career in London at Arsenal.
Pardew believes that the Peterborough-born right winger has the crossing ability that would be a great supply for big Andy Carroll, the new star of English football.
Newcastle were initially said to be after Spur’s Robbie Keane on loan, and Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has also said that Croatian star, Niko Kranjcar, is also available to leave the North London club in January.
But if this is a straight buy, Newcastle will pay nowhere near the £15M Spurs paid Blackburn Rovers for Bentley four years ago, and indeed David is probably not worth more than around £3M to £4M in the current transfer market, based on his form and appearances in the last couple of seasons.
And it would seem like a loan move through the end of the season would be the best bet, so the Tyneside club could then gauge the form of the former England International.
It seems to us any one or even two from David Bentley, Robbie Keane and Niko Krancjar would improve the Newcastle squad, so maybe two on loan, and signing French star Ben Arfa full time, would be very good business by Newcastle this month.
Bentley has played only 56 times with 6 goals for Spurs in four years, and played 132 times for Blackburn with 20 goals.
Bentley played on loan at Norwich in 2004-2005 with 28 appearances and two goals and played 9 times in total, for Arsenal, with one goal.
He has played just 7 times for England, and certainly needs a move somewhere to regenerate and reinvigorate his career.
Of course we have no idea if this report in the Mail is accurate – but it would appear there are three good players available at Tottenham.

Comment #1Yeah lets buy him and turn him back the way he was, just like we did with joey barton.

when u have a stiker who thrives on crosses, it makes sense to have players who can actually put in quality balls. I dont care if bentley stands on one spot all game and just delivers balls onto carroll’s head from the wing, anything would be an improvement on the current options. How many goals did shearer get off nobby solano crosses!!???

Exactly! Joey Barton has turned out to be our best midfielder. To me David Bentley is a terrific player and would fit into our style perfectly. Right now our wingers are piss poor crossing the ball. David Bentley is one of the best passers in the league. But, just doesn’t get a chance with Tottenham, so that is why we should go in for him now. I think he would be a great player for us to sign.

Comment #4Could anyone refresh my memory of any occasion when Newcastle have signed a ‘former’ hot prospect who has bombed at his club but gone on to be fabulous for us? Firstly I think it’s bollocks in any case. He’s important back up for the first time and who is gonna sell a player bought for 18 million for a poxy 3 mill? Keane is believable, but we couldn’t afford this fella…..would be interesting to see if he could recreate his rovers form though…

Comment #5My main concern is he’s a typical signing of the Shepherd era. Big name who will demand a high salary etc… had promise, made a big move and failed. We’ve seen it before with Scott Parker, Emre, Smith, Owen and so on. All these players should have worked out, but never did.
If he was available for £4m and was on around £40k a week, then maybe.

what do you guys think?
I think he would be great on direct free-kicks.
Barton never scores on those ones…

Comment #7In Dirty Harry’s own words – “David Bentley keeps picking up injuries on Friday morning”. Do we need another liability at the club. We already have Xisco and Best. However, Niko Kranjcar would be a top class move, hes a fantastic player and would be good cover for Nolan. We also need to think about a cover for Tiote in the summer because Smudgey may want to move.

Comment #8Loan with a view to buy YES but not to buy outright in the Window too much of a rish, Bentley is a player that plays when he feels like it and with some bad luck with injuries we could get lumbered with someone not willing to do anything for the cause! he can be somewhat lazy sometimes but then on his day he can be amazing a big gamble to buy but a loan may do us some good!

Comment #9Bentley would be an awesome signing either loan or perm as his quality in deliveries and set pieces are 2nd to none he would certainly improve our side also wouldnt mind Kranjcar for the left wing as Jonas is awful.. But i do hope this bentley story is true..we need 2 wingers and 1 striker and we’ll be in for a top 12 finish

newcastle is like the king midas all it takes gold.
if it bothers them, sorry.
we have signed some players were not used, and have been productive for us.

Comment #12A guy who is an elite crosser of the ball? Why would anyone complain?
At his best he is an English international. He has been wasted at Spurs, I feel he would flourish at Newcastle. Get on him to make a right play at being the guy who has the most assists at the club by seasons end if he comes.
Young Andy would be licking his lips at the prospect of playing with him.

Comment #16Bentley is a class player.
He might be lacking in some areas of his play, but he has a godlike right foot. Excellent crossing and deadly shooting. He will secure a couple of 3 pointers in a season.
His days in Tottenham seem to be numbered, but will he be priced right for us? I think not. He will probably be too expenisive. I would not pay more than 5m for this player, and I think his pricetag will be between 6-8.

Comment #17I would try getting both bentley and keane for 7 mill think spurs would take it then offer bentley 5 years on 45 and keane 2 on 60 get them both in sharpish then look to maybe seeing if there was a way of bringing Pienaar here would be quality but that one is just a dream I think.
Also don’t buy any foreign crap need people with PL experience.

Comment #18Bentley, Kranjcar and Keane, I’d take them all right now!
But in priority order:
Kranjcar
Bentley
Keane
That said, we only need one if Arfa is signing on for us (everthing crossed). Kranjcar still gets on the spurs bench so more likely to be bentley.

Comment #19There’s defo some very good fringe players kicking around – also Micah Richards has only played like twice in the last 10 games, he would be an immense RB. Doubt city would sell though as he’s good cover, unless he wanted a move. Also Bridge hardly gets a game, but we have a good LB already. SWP is another one – but he’s a risk as total confidence player, if you can give him confidence he’s amazing, but then a second rate championship player without it.

Comment #20To be a very good team, we need…..
Two quality wingers (Arfa, Krancjar, Bentley)
One supporting CF (?)
A quality RB. (Richards)
Not saying we are going to sign these players, especially with our business model, but that’s the type of quality we need to push on and become a consistent top 10 finishing club.

Comment #23Wouldn’t mind Bently tbh, what about getting macheda on loan from man united? Fergie reckons they have enough strikers! And his agent says a loan will have the option to buy?! Just a thought?! Any news on John carver coming home yet? I’ve still got a feeling he’s un the running for the burnley job – dunno why!!

(Happy New year to one and all)
for David Bentley read Big Time Charlie. I know of his big shot antics at Blackburn Rovers, and he has probably got worse in London. Pardew wants his head looking.
1) He already thinks he is one of the best players in the world.
2) Dirty Harry has sussed him out as a waste of time (he was not even warmed up against us the other day).
3) Spurs often play Jenas out of position rather than Bentley.
4) How come ‘if his crossing is so fabulous’, is Peter Crouch not the golden boot holder?
In short, for Gods sake, NO. we need disruptive big shots like we need a hole in the head.

Comment #25bentley was always dubbed the new bergkamp at arsenal fpr his technical ability.
Don’t know why we insist on playing hit and hope long balls and crosses all the time, someone like Bentley could be a link striker with our midfield which is always bypassed.

Comment #26#4 “Could anyone refresh my memory of any occasion when Newcastle have signed a ‘former’ hot prospect who has bombed at his club but gone on to be fabulous for us?”
Kevin Nolan, Mike Williamson, Danny Simpson?
I say bring all three in on loans until the end of the season with views to buy, then make a more educated decision in the summer. I think Keane’s probably too old for a permanent move in the summer though.
I’d love to see Van Aanholt back in a Newcastle shirt.

Comment #27“David Bentley – Newcastle in for this right winger”
– I think you left the ‘h’ out of whinger, Ed?
I agree with Lynxie. Big head, big salary and big pain in the arse.
We’ve got good team spirit, so we claim, but you can’t keep heaping on flawed characters and expect them to become battlers by osmosis. Sooner or later, the good ones will get cheesed off.
Get rid of Xisco at any price for the same reason. Having a total waste drawing a fat salary for nowt must grate on other players’ nerves. Ship him out fast.
