Well would you believe it – we were all told on Saturday that Leon Best had been put on the transfer list by Alan Pardew – well that’s just not true.
Leon Best – not for sale
And Leon made his Premier League debut late in the game at Wigan yesterday, and we must say he looked quite sharp, and with a little bit of luck he could have scored just before the end.
Leon has not made a successful start to his career at all at Newcastle, but there again he’s had a lot of injuries to contend with, and we remember he did score two goals in pre-season and looked sharp in those games too.
But he has still to score his first goal for Newcastle in competitive play.
Best has started just six games since signing from Coventry City 12 months ago, and has 14 appearances for Newcastle, and is now the 5th striker apparently behind Nile Ranger as well as being behind Carroll, Lovenkrands and Ameobi.
Reports on Saturday said Leon Best had been put on the transfer list by Pardew, but apparently that’s not true, as Pardew told the Evening Chronicle today:
“That’s not true at all.” “Leon played a really nice cameo at Wigan.”
“It was good to see the fans’ reaction to him, which I thought was positive and good.”
“He put his life on the line with a couple of challenges out there in the short period he was on.”
If Best is staying at the club then we’ll probably see him make a sub appearance again on Wednesday night against West Ham, and we’ll see what he looks like then.
But what Leon needs most to get his Newcastle career going is a goal, and if he can get one, then who knows he could still come good.
But we must say this is surprising news about Leon, who’s had a terrible time of things over the last 12 months.
We have to think that he’s looked good in training since he returned from injury, otherwise he wouldn’t have got the nod in front of Nile Ranger yesterday.
