It’s not very often you hear anything at all from owner Mike Ashley or Managing Director Derek Llambias, so when they say something I suppose we should publish it – and get it out there.
Mike Ashley with Derek LLambias
Managing Director Derek Llambias, Mike Ashley’s right hand man at Newcastle, has written in the program notes for tonight’s important game against West Ham, and this is what he had to say:
“We are very pleased by the way our players have taken to the challenges of the Premier League during the first half of the season and while we knew life in this division would be tough, the lads have shown they have a real appetite for it.”
“We enjoyed some memorable highlights here at St James’ Park last year, and the game against Ipswich Town, where we received the Championship trophy, our 6-0 win over Aston Villa and, of course, our derby win over Sunderland are days that will never be forgotten.”
“Now we head into a new year and another exciting 12 months lie ahead. With your continued support, we are confident we can continue to progress in 2011.”
It’s interesting Derek points out the 6-0 win against Aston Villa, in our first home league game in the Premier League this season, and of course the 5-1 pasting of Sunderland, also at home.
Both wins were under previous manager Chris Hughton, and we still have no idea why they sacked him – and yes, we never really know what happened behind the scenes.
But we agree with Derek that the players have been fantastic – not least by the way they have put the significant disappointment of losing Chris Hughton behind them – and given the new manager Alan Pardew their full support over the last four weeks or so.
We’re proud of the way they’ve maturely reacted to almost every situation this season – and last season too – come to think of it.
Now to hammer West Ham tonight – that’s the only thing that matters today.
