News from Sky Sports this evening that Newcastle may be interested in Stoke City play-maker Glenn Whelan.
Glenn Whelan – while playing for Ireland
Other clubs said to be interested in the player are Wigan and West Bromwich Albion, but this is a surprising player for Newcastle to be linked with.
Newcastle do need more creativity in midfield, especially in central midfield, but we wonder if Glenn is good enough to be a first-teamer at Newcastle – we doubt it.
The 26 year-old Dublin-born midfielder started his career at Manchester City in 2001, but moved on to play for Sheffield Wednesday in 2004 after playing just once for City and 15 times on loan at Bury.
Glenn was in the side that won promotion to the Championship in May of 2005, and then in January of 2008 he joined Stoke City for a low £500K.
The 5’10” tall player played 159 times with 17 goals for Sheffield Wednesday, and has so far played 100 times with 6 goals for Stoke City.
We’d be very surprised if Glenn Whelan ended up at Newcastle United, but if he does he would simply be a squad player in the attacking central midfield positions.
Newcastle have little cover for Nolan and Barton in that area of the field, with Danny Guthrie not seemingly coming through much on Tyneside this season.
In total Glenn Whelan has 275 first class appearances in his career with 23 goals.
And in addition he has played 26 times for Ireland with a couple of goals.
What do you think?

Ok, here’s who i would go for:
Adel Taarabt as I’ve been calling for him for sometime. I don’t think anyone would argue that as he can play in a CAM role or out wide on the left
Mohommed Diame – great holding midfielder. would probably want to start all the time but I wouldn’t be surprised if some big teams try to pluck Tiote in the summer and I really like how disciplined Diame is. Just plays in a crap team.
Larrson wouldn’t be my first choice for an out and out winger but not bad by any means.
Scott Sinclair from swansea. Young, hungary, impressive speed and a work-rate only second to most of the players in our team and I think he would work well with AC.
Should’ve gotten Gylfi last year when we had the chance :/ . He’s tearing up the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim right now!
No to Sears, no to Whelan, no to Bentley, no to Keane. Kranjcar would be nice but i can’t see that happening.
So yes, were it me, I would feel confident in our strike options especially if we brought in Sinclair. My shortlist would be (assuming we wouldn’t get everyone)
Diame
Taarabt
Sinclair
Hammill
Larrson
Maynard
Gradel
what do you guys think? not sure about LB or RB cover but have been very impressed with Simpson this year

Comment #50mattyNUFC @ 39. I was being sarcastic mate. No I don’t think he would improve us now. 5 years ago on the other hand? I don’t think we are even looking at forwards at the minute. Frankly, I still feel wingers and full backs should be our priority.

Comment #55So in summary……We’ve signed up Arfa and got S Taylor tied down, looks like smith is going back to leeds, ‘Arry has finally dropped his interest in Carroll, Tozer is staying at Northampton and we’re loaning a few of the younger young’uns out – and we MAY be landing Larsson.

Comment #58Please tell me this window closes soon …
Hopefully none of the players mentioned will be brought in.
Then the club will post on the official site the signing of a surprise quality player, we can all stop speculating wildly and get back to actual football?

Comment #62Jay Bothroyd is a player who I don’t really rate too highly, however, I remember watching him make his debut for Coventry City some years ago, against Monkey Heeds mackems, and he single handedly tore them a new backside. If we could borrow him for the game against the mackems next week, I reckon I would go for it.

Comment #73@colwell Yeah Gio would be a nice Loan deal tbh if we were truly interested in Adel than Gio is same type of Playmaker and would be easy to get loan and maybe view to buy?
I still think we need a striker tbh someone cheap ish below 2 Mill i mean someone like Charlie Adam who may be NUFC fan his hero growning up with Shearer so mite be and he would work ALOT for the cause which we want we dont want another Ameobi type of “Lets no run” attitude.
On the Whelan i would think we would of moved for Jamie O Hara on loan before buying Glenn,Jamie is alot better than him and would be sold or loaned, he works hard and is a good player nothing special but does a job.
Heard alot of news from Leeds ppl we are trading Alan Smith for Max Gradel, would be a good deal if we can do that!

Comment #80if we have some money, please sign Connor Whickham now ! Roy Keane sacked then maybe we got the chance .
I think Tottenham don’t want to sell their players to us because they think if let us keep on improve our squad, It will be dangerous for them in the future. Bermingham is not their rival contender.
